Learning Outcomes in Higher Education

The world is changing. Societies have chosen in many ways to get whatever they want in
life instantaneously, even in education system. In other way, the unsustainable actions can be
reserved in our communities, anytime, anywhere. We are now trying to understand that the
changes that have to be made involves all parts and level of society. Education will play a crucial
role in this adaptation towards sustainable development.
In higher education, we educate people that will shape the future society. They will
develop the societal and technical system, be the most influential decisions maker, and they will
educate citizens and professional on all levels. This implies rethinking and reorganizing in higher
education to become an effective changes agent.
Systemic or holistic thinking is often mentioned in sets of learning outcomes for student
in higher education. Analytical thinking is about breaking the things apart while synthetic
thinking is about putting things together. Systemic thinking in other hand, is about combining
these two thing in a larger system and be able to understand cause-effect chains and also to
understand conception of model of a system.
Skills that are often mentioned are problem solving, teamwork, critical and creative
thinking, and becoming an effective changes agent. But learning outcomes do not refer only to
knowledge and skill, but also to awareness, attitudes, and values.
In addition to gaining all kind of knowledge, the learning outcomes all included systemic
thinking and also interpersonal and intrapersonal skill to create an educated people because they
will be the most influential decisions maker in order to create a better future.
