Throughoutthisreportyouwillbelearningwhathelpsyoubreakdownfoodandhowit'sdone.
Themouthisthebeginningofthedigestivesystem,Thesmellofthefoodiswhattriggersthe
salivaryglandsinyourmouthtosecretesaliva.Therearethreestepstwobreakingdownthe
food.Salivaisaveryimportantpartofyourbody,itismadeupofmostlywater,italsohas
proteinsandmineralsthatwillprotectyourteeth.Whenyouactuallytastethefoodthesaliva
increases.Theteethisanotherknownsourcetohelpbreakdownthefoodyoueat.Itisknown
asoneofthehardestsubstancesinyourbody,anditplaysaveryimportantrolewithspeech.
Onceyoustartchewingandbreakingdownthefoodintosmallerpiecesthesalivaproduces
moresothatitcanbreakdownthefoodevenmoreintoajuicelikeliquid.

testingtubesthateachhaveabrokenupcrackerineach.Thetubeshadbothdifferentthingsin
itonehadH2Oandtheothertubehadsaliva.Thishelpedmeouttoseehowdifferentthings
wereabletobreakdownfoodswhilethechewingishappening.Thecatsstomachand
esophagusbothplayimportantrolesinthedigestivesystem.TheEsophagusseemstohave
onlyoneimportantroleinthebodytocarryfood,liquids,andsalivafromthemouthtothe
stomach.Thestomachthenactsasacontainertostartdigestionandpumpfood,liquidsintothe
smallintestinesandlargeintestines,nutrientscanlaterbeabsorbedthroughtheintestines.The
esophagustransportsthefoodtothestomachbyacoordinatedcontractionsofthemuscle
linings.Thefoodpastthroughtheesophagusandthemusclesthatallowthefoodtogodown
fromuptodownaretheupperandlowerendsbymusclescalledsphincters.Thefoodgoes
throughtheloweresophagealsphincterbeforeitentersthestomach.Thestomachworksas
wellastheesophagus,thestomachbreaksdownthefoodintosmallerpiecesandhelpsthe
foodpassthroughtheintestineswithoutanyproblems.

Thefollowinginformationwillbeaboutthecat'sintestinesandwhat'stheirfunctions.Thesmall
intestineisthefirstintestineIwillbetalkinganditsfunction.Thesmallintestineisatubelike
structure,thatextendsbetweenthestomachandlargeintestine.Itisthelongestpartofthe
intestinaltractandisabouttwoandahalftimestheanimal'sbodysize.Thesmallintestinehas
threepartstowherethefecespassthrough.TheyarecalledDuodenumiswhereitallstarts,
Jejunumisthemiddlepartoftheintestine,Andlastistheileumwhichislocatednearthececum
ofthelargeintestine.Thenextintestineisthelargeintestinewhichisconnectedtotherectum.
Thelargeintestineisalsobrokenupintodifferentsegments.Cecumisintheveryfrontpartof
thelargeintestine.Ascendingcolon,Transversecolon,DescendingcolonandSigmoidareall
partsofhowthefecespastthroughthelargeintestineandenterstherectum.Thewhole
functionofthepancreasistohelpwiththedigestivesystemonthebreakingdownoffoods,the
pancreascreatesenzymesandhormonestohelpbreakdownfoods.Theliversfunctiontothe
systemisthatithelpsincompensatingthebloodincludingtheamountsofsugar(glucose),
proteinandfatthatentersthebloodstream.
