PART ONE: LONG-TERM PLANNING

Learning Environment

cole Sainte-Genevive ouest, 35 Sainte-Anne street, H9H 2Z2

The school that I have chosen is Ste-Genevieve west. It is located at 35 Sainte-Anne

street, in Pierrefonds. The school has a zero tolerance policy on intimidation. They also
have a croque livre, which is a type of public book nook where students can take a
book from it and exchange it with on they had at home. They are in some ways recycling
used books. This school is located in a middle to low income neighborhood of
Pierrefonds. Although, most of the students in this school come from low income
households. Many of them immigrated from a different country. Every year, close to
Christmas the school collects food for the Christmas food drive and instead of giving it to
other organisation they distribute it between the less fortunate students of the school.
They have a list of specific students which they give back to. I personally think that it is a
wonderful thing to do. You need to help the ones close to you first and then help other

people. There is a daycare service in the morning, at lunch time and afterschool. They
only have extracurricular activities during the lunch time. semester will be divided with
the 5 month 5-month program, in this global planning students will start the year with
their intensive English program and finish the year with their other classes. There are five
periods a day, three of them in the morning and two in the afternoon. The students have
one recess in the morning and one at lunch time. School starts at 8 in the morning, the last
period of the morning is from 10:19 to 11:19 and school finished at 3 in the afternoon.

The theme of my classroom with be Travel the world.

In the beginning of the school year I will place my students in teams of five. They will be
sitting with these teammates for the rest of the English school year. I will let them choose
a country they want to work on, from a predetermined list of countries. When they have
chosen their country, each team will get homemade boarding passes to their specific
country.

5
During the semester they will learn about different cultures throughout the world. Every
two weeks we will have about one to two hours to present new things about their country.
In the end of the semester they will have created a full portfolio about their country.

My students
My classroom has 25 students; in which I have 12 boys and 13 girls. They have a
lot of energy.
The students in my classroom come from various backgrounds. Most of them
come from different countries. Most of them are new to the school. They decided
to join the intensive English program.
Most of my students are trilingual and for them English is their second and third
language.
My students come from low income households.
None of my students have learning disabilities although I have one boy that has
anger issues and I need to be careful with him. I have meeting with the
psychologist when I cannot control his crisis.
One of the students has a severe allergy to peanuts. In order to avoid any allergic
reaction, I will band any type of nuts in the classroom. In addition, when we will
have the potluck I will send a message to the parents to exclude all meals that
may contain nuts.

There is a lot of remedial tutoring for kids in French.
There is one psychologist.
There is two English teacher one who is full-time and one part-time teacher
who only has the first, second graders.
There are three gym teachers and one music teacher.

History of the intensive program in that school

In Ste-Genevieve there is no intensive program therefor I would be the one to start the
program. I would get in touch with teachers from different schools who are teaching
intensive English and I would ask them for pointers on how to plan for this type of
classroom. The reason why the school would want to adopt the intensive English program
would be because there is a high school not too far from this school where they have a
program of enrichment and they would need to get better in English in order to be
accepted in the program.

Jessica Bousquet Intensive Teaching of English UQAM DDL5310 Fall 2015 Global planning

Class management (in accordance with your theme)

I would be a go with the flow type of teacher. I would try to work on whatever interest
the students. I would also always be open to suggestions for new topics to discuss in
class. I believe in creating an affective bond with my students, because I would see them
as my kids. I would not want anything to happened to them. I will treat them with
respect and I will treat them like adults. I want to work on their self-monitoring.
I believe in being tough but fair. I will use all my strategies that I have practiced this
semester. If students are misbehaving I will at first only give him a look. In general, they
stop when I stare at them. If they continue I walk closer to them and stand next to them. It
often makes them feel watched and they stop misbehaving. I would also try as much as
possible to get to know my students in a deeper level that way, they could feel
comfortable to come up to me and tell me that they are not happy and they do not wish to
be bothered that day. I would also use my trouble makers to help me during my lessons in
giving them important tasks to do. This way, they will be kept occupied and I will be
able to continue my lesson with less distractions.

Classroom rules
At the beginning of the school year I would take
time with my students to create the classroom
rules. I think that it is important to give them a
sense of responsibility. We would debate on what
would be the ideal classroom environment. I
would write down on the board beforehand one
Jessica Bousquet Intensive Teaching of English UQAM DDL5310 Fall 2015 Global planning

8
of my main rules; TO ONLY SPEAK ENGLISH. They would then give out ideas and I
would try to regroup their ideas into main objectives. Afterwards I would ask my friend
Giovanna, who is a graphic designer to create a poster of our class rules. When the poster
will be ready I will put it on the wall for the rest of the year. This is an example of a class
room poster I asked my friend to create for me. I would be strict about my rules and will
not tolerate anyone being disrespectful towards anyone in my classroom.

How you will enforce speaking only English in class

As an intensive English teacher the main focus would be for students to speak English all
the time. I would have a poster on the door before they enter written English only. I will
explain to them in the beginning of the school year that I will be grading them throughout
the year on C1 and that English in the classroom will count in their report cards. I will
have a list of names and I will walk around and write E if they are speaking in English
and F if they are speaking in French. At the end of two weeks I will give them an
official English card with the option of three colours being:
Red = Speaks only French
Yellow = Speaks French and English
Green = Speaks only English.
I will tell them if you like the colour continue you are doing great. If you do not like the
colour you received, then you need to make an effort and change your habits!
Homework
As for homework, I am not a strong believer in homework. Therefore, I would try to give
out the less homework as possible. I think that Tuesday to Thursday would be were they
would have the most homework. As for the weekend, I would try to give them the least
Jessica Bousquet Intensive Teaching of English UQAM DDL5310 Fall 2015 Global planning

9
homework as possible. I would probably make them fill out different subjects in their
observation log, just a few sentences about something I asked them to watch or to read
about.

Classroom layout for the first month

On the first page: Create a floor plan of your class on one page for September

On the subsequent pages:

My groups would be placed as a W that was I could keep a better eye on everyone. I
would have an art section where they could have access to many different craft items for
them to add in their portfolios or projects, because I find that art should be gave an
important place in a school. I would also have a computer and music section in the left
top corner, where they could listen to recordings or research on different subjects. I will
have a reading area where they can sit and relax while reading their book. I will have a
place for their portfolios that way they have everything in class to be able to work on in
when they have free time. I also have a pet rabbit, they will learn responsibilities with it,
because they will need to take care of it. I would have posters of different places in the
word in my class. I put my students in teams because they will form five of the seven
continents in the world. Also this will be their team for the remaining of the English
school year, because they will need to work with their partners on different projects.

Outside the classroom I would have all of there names on their locker. They would have
created little caricatures of themselves and it would be placed with their class number. On
my classroom door I would have pictures of different countries and I would have an
English only sign in the door.
For my classroom I would create a wheel of
responsibility! I would have made a small basket with
my students name and every third day I would change
pick out new names. When their name is called out
they will go to the wheel of responsibility and spin it

Main activities for each month

Throughout the five my students will be working on their portfolio. They will build a
portfolio on a country they will have worked for the past five months. In the end my
students will be little experts on the subject. We will have in September the terry fox run
which will be apart of our healthy living month. The students will learn about meditation
and ways to decompress, which they will be able to use in the future when they are facing
stressful times. As an outing we will go serve meal for homeless people near Christmas
time. We will also create small food basket and we will give them to the homeless. Each
month we will learn about a different country and their cultural differences. In the end
they will have build up a full repertoire of interesting aspect of their country and they will
present it to there family. To celebrate the end of the semester they will go to a camp for 3
days.

Building your Resources

Books, material, technology, etc.
Describe the ones already available, the ones you need to add, your budget, where you
can find resources, free ones, other material, etc.
I would get a budget of 650$.
I have many different books on different places to visit, since my dad work for Air
Transat. We could use them to get information about different countries.
We have about one dictionary for two students. They are always place in their
table topper pack that way if they ever need it they can.
I have two computers and there is an internet service in the classrooms.
They will have access to online dictionaries and thesauruses for synonyms.
I will have them equip with different free softwares to be able to create different
projects with; Movie Maker, Audacity, Microsoft word, etc.
I will have a list of website saved in favorites for them to use; Weebly to create a
webpage, Educaplay to practice or create English games, Google drive for them to
be able to send each other projects, etc.
I would supply the art material, since a have a wide variety at home already.
I also have old laptops at home that I may bring for students to work on.

16

Getting support from the parents and the school

staf
In order to get the support from the parents I will:
In the beginning of the school year I will invite the students parents for a
meeting. I would have prepared a handout for them explaining my expectations
throughout the term and the main goal of the year.
Have a webpage created on Weebly. Giving them access to the weekly schedules.
They will even be able to contact me through this site.
Ask parents to look at the website, because all the upcoming exams and projects
will be written on it.
Explain to parents that they play an important role in their childs learning.
Give parents resources to practice English at home.
I will send monthly information about the progress of their child.
Invite parents to the English classroom opening.

As for the other staff members, I will:

Invite the principle and vice principle to the cutting of the ribbon for the English
only class.
I would collaborate with the music and phys. Ed. teacher to do different activities.
I would try to find a sport that is played in a specific country and they would
practice it in gym class and we would learn about it in our classroom. As for the
music class, I would work on poetry with them.
