Worksheet 17.

1
Electric charges
Experiments with static electricity show that there are two
types of electric charge. Test your knowledge of how an
object can gain a charge and how we know about the forces
between electric charges.
1 When a polythene rod is rubbed with a woollen cloth, the rod gains a
negative charge.
a What type of electric charge does the cloth gain?
b What type of charged particles are passed from the cloth to the rod?
c What charge do these particles have, positive or negative?
d What force causes this transfer of charge?
2 When an acetate rod is rubbed with a cotton cloth, the rod gains a
positive charge. Describe how you would set about showing the following
rules for electric charges:

Like charges repel.

Unlike charges attract.

You should mention the following:

the equipment you would use

what you would do with it
what you would expect to observe
how this would show the rules stated above.
