The economic impact of tourism to the state is
growing. Tourism is one of Montanas leading industries
with more than 11 million non-resident visitors in 2014
and supporting over 38,000 jobs, up 15% over 2013. These
non-resident visitors spent $3.98 billion and generated
$276 million in state and local taxes, which lowered taxes
on each Montana household by over $650.
Since 2010 annual nonresident spending has
increased by over 52%. Businesses in Northeast Montana
can benefit from these non-resident travelers.
Missouri River Country assists in bringing visitors
to Northeast Montana by marketing our area as a
destination for the outdoor adventurist, geotourist,
history buffs, Native American Culturists, Dinosaur Trail
followers, hunters, fishermen, and women and the overall
recreationists.
One of our marketing methods is to attend trade
shows. We distribute information at these shows and assist
attendees to plan a vacation or hunting or fishing trip to
our northeast corner of the state. In January we exhibited
in San Diego, CA at the Travel and Adventure show. March
was a busy month with Missouri River Country exhibiting
in Philadelphia, PA and Williston, ND. These shows have
produced leads to bring visitors to our area.
Missouri River Country is Montanas northeastern
tourism region. It covers Garfield, McCone, Phillips,
Valley, Sheridan, Daniels, Richland and Roosevelt
Counties along with the Fort Peck Reservation. A Board
of Directors appointed by their respective County
Commissioners manages the organization.

The bison (a.lk.a. Tatanka or bison) at Fort Peck were

lounging on a hillside yesterday afternoon as the sun
was trying to poke out after a Monday and Tuesday
super soaker; rain gauges in Fort Peck recorded a
good five inches. In other bison news, last week the
American Prairie Reserve added to their ever-growing
chunk of land the PN Ranch north of Winifred, 47,000
acres worth in the Upper Missouri River Breaks.

Ranch (terms of the sale were not disclosed but it had

been listed for more than $20 million) located inside the
378,000-acre Upper Missouri River Breaks continues
the organizations strategy to use private real estate
deals to leverage public lands. Other reserve holdings
are within and adjacent to the million-acre C.M. Russell
National Wildlife Refuge. Whether wild bison re-inhabit
the public lands around the reserve will be largely up
to state wildlife officials. So... that pretty much tells you
whats a-coming!

Duck Commander
joins the NC fight

On Monday, the Justice

Department announced it was
suing North Carolina over its
bathroom law, which requires
men and women to use the
bathroom that coincides with
their gender at birth. Attorney
General Loretta Lynch called
the law state sponsored
discrimination
against
transgender individuals, and
made comparisons to Jim
Crow laws.
North Carolina filed
suit against the federal
government
calling
the
federal action a baseless and
blatant overreach.
Duck Dynasty star Phil
Robertson is fighting back
against the mob mentality
of political correctness,
standing in support of North
Carolina which faces a
fierce battle with the federal
government over the states
transgender bathroom law.
The
Judeo-Christian
values that led America
to greatness are under full
assault by the mob mentality
of political correctness, and
were slowly losing our soul,
Robertson wrote in an email
to conservative supporters.
Ive got a radical
idea,
Robertson
wrote.
Men should use the mens
bathroom and women should
use the womens bathroom,
he wrote. Just because a man
may feel like a woman doesnt
mean he should be able to
share a bathroom with my
daughter, or yours. That used
to be called common sense.
Now its called bigoted.

This generous funding comes from individuals, businesses and corporate sponsors to encourage
excellence and enable students to pursue their educational goals.
These FES scholarships are 4 of 1,788 scholarships awarded in 2016 through the National FFA

financial need are all considered in scholarship selection. FFA members are eligible to receive one scholarship as a graduating high
school senior, and a second scholarship during college.

About National FFA Foundation

The National FFA Foundation builds partnerships with industry, education, government, other foundations and individuals to
secure financial resources that recognize FFA member achievements, develop student leaders and support the future of agricultural
education. Governed by a 19-member board of trustees comprised of educators, business leaders, individual donors and FFA
alumni, the foundation is a separately-registered nonprofit organization. About 82 percent of every dollar received by the foundation
supports FFA members and agricultural education opportunities. For more, visit FFA.org/Give.

Preparing for a bike ride continued from front

I came up with this idea over

time, as I realized that everyone goes
through pain, whether its physical
or emotional. When I would run/
bike/exercise, I would imagine the
pain in my legs and try to compare
the pain to the emotional pain my
brother had gone through.
Id ask myself, is this the pain
level measured in emotional pain
he felt? Of course we cant convert it
over and measure it, but I would push
through the run and find strength in
my brothers immeasurable pain.

Ive accomplished some running
goals in life, and decided to switch it
up and make a goal to not only ride
my bike across our beautiful state
of Montana. This was a huge idea,
considering Ive only ridden my bike
to work and back, but henceforth
the birth of #RidingForaReason.
So here I am, planning my
678 mile bike ride. I bought a new
touring bike, and Ive got the map
and dates figured out and now I need
your support! All of the proceeds
of this event benefit the American
Foundation for Suicide Prevention
(AFSP), with 50% of it going directly
to the Montana Chapter of AFSP.
Sadly, our beautiful state of
Montana is ranked #1 as the highest
rate of suicides per capita of all 50
states. Did you know 251 Montanas

die by suicide each year? Thats one

loved one every 35 hours, just in
Montana!
More on where exactly the
funds go can be found at www.afsp.
org or you can visit my donation
page, which can be found on my
Facebook event #RidingForaReason
and donate directly, or contact me
for more directions. Im asking for
support by donating a flat dollar
amount, or a dollar amount per mile
I ride talk about motivation!
I would also like to extend a
very special invitation; as I ride my
bike across Montana, I go through
Glasgow on Thursday, June 16th
at 9:00 a.m. and I would love my
community and sponsors to ride
with me. I would be thrilled to have
you, whether on bike, gator, car, etc!
It is only 1.85 miles and kids are
welcome to ride too. We will have a
police escort, Mayor Becky Erickson
riding in a gator with us, and Former
Mayor Dan Carney will be along for
the event as well.
Many of you knew Brian; just
think how tickled he would be to
see you there. We will meet west
of town in Glasgows new Big Sky
Auto Accessories parking lot and
the escort will end in the Farm
Equipment Sales parking lot, as
I continue on towards the state

border, spreading the news of my

mission!
I like quotes and they get me
through my days sometimes. A few
of my favorites:
If your dreams dont scare you,
they arent big enough. -Ellen
Johnson Sirleaf
If you cant excel with talent,
triumph with effort. -Dave
Weinbaum
Oh yes I can, watch me.
Overweight and 32, Sarah
Schindler
Thank you for reading my story
and I thank you for helping a sister
out Brians sister! I also thank
you for being there for your loved
ones in their times of need, whether
theyve lost someone to suicide,
having suicidal thoughts, or have a
loved one with suicidal thoughts.
To learn more about warning
signs to look for and how to help,
please visit www.afsp.org or call
the suicide help line at 1(800) 2738255. For more information on how
I intend to bring suicide prevention
to our community directly, please
keep in touch with my Facebook
event, #RidingForaReason, and
always remember #everylifematters.
