Discourse Community Response
The human mind develops thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and ideas once it collaborates with a
discourse community. Our intentions and drives all come to life once we form part of a specific group
in society, creating a sense of that we belong and coincide with other members. A discourse
community may be defined as a group of people with similar interests, language and social norms,
patterns, and practices that all convey to pursue a similar goals. We join everyday communities
without noticing and follow their rules accordingly. To portray this statement better, nobody would
imagine acting and talking the way they do at home as to around a professor from class. We can
clearly see a difference in audience, voice, vocabulary, and membership, thus we can apply rhetoric
knowledge to make effective writing. By successfully differentiating the voice, purpose, and context,
we can communicate in with greater success to our discourse communities which in my case come
down to church, UTEP, DSSW, and family.
In Catholic church, the environment is very polite and generous. The purpose is to create a
bond with God and spread his word to those who need it. The setting calls for formality, however, yet
more importantly, an open mind to the word of God. For example, when speaking to a priest or pastor,
it's more appropriate to listen to his advice for future reference and reserve all opinions once the
lecture or sermon is through. Elders are very respected in the community due to their numerous years
of experience resulting in wisdom, thus we value their hardships and learn from their words, and we
as pre- adults, refuse to interrupt or nag right away as we would do with family member or a friend.
Actions are much greater key than words, for this reason, values are constantly displayed through acts
of humility and servanthood through volunteer community service. Phrases and analogies are traced
back to Bible readings to never forget the word of who we worship and congregate in the name of,
such as in lunches, before, and after of events. Communication involves weekly meetings, bulletin

announcements, and lectures. Becoming a member is simple, forming a relationship with God and put
dedication into it.
The community of the Engineering College in the University of Texas at El Paso is a much
more formal and stricter place. Before becoming part of it, once must apply, acquire a High School
diploma, complete orientation, and pass all TSI exams. The sole purpose of this college is an ambition
to acquire a Bachelor's in any Engineering degree and pursue higher levels of education and
successful job positions in prestigious companies around the world. The process to get to the final
goal is rigorous and requires outstanding working skills in groups and under pressure. One must be
constantly focused on the target and avoid falling into any traps of distraction, because in a
competitive world of STEM it's crucial to remain determined and productive. Although group
presentations are essential to acquiring an excellent grade, projects involving Auto CAD, Revit, and
technical sketching basically shape the future of our success and must be mastered more than any
other genres in this community. Respect and honesty to our advisors and professors must always
remain mutual in order to have an outstanding reputation to receive opportunities of working in
internships and research projects. However, grades are important and Blackboard and Web Assign
serve great as a way of turning in assignments and communicating with professors.
At DSSW (Disability Services of the South West), the environment differs between the office
and at actual work with the patients. In order to just become part of it, a whole background check
must take place to make sure there is a trustworthy person being inducted into the agency.
Furthermore, endless medical and legal documents must be read and signed, and later complete an
orientation where common symptoms and actions are discussed through in order to provide the best
service possible. In the office and in the patients' home, patience, availability, and trust must be
immediately demonstrated in order to give them confidence that they are in good hands.
Communicating with the offices of the agency, patients' relatives and therapists is vital and must
always reveal leadership as well as capability of handling the completely care of a person with
disabilities. The genres include time sheets, phone calls, text messages, and memos, however, oral is

mostly used because the time is mostly spent with patients who sometimes lack the ability to move
and only have their voice to serve as a projector of their needs. Once trust has been established
between the patient and the caretaker, the setting at their home may become more informal, but
always keeping the polite tone.
A related discourse community to the informality of the pervious one is family and friends.
Although it holds a great sense of unity, love, and belonging, the pressure is usually not felt because
there is more relaxed and flexible feeling. Family and friends radiate unconditional support through
cheerful and hard times. The language among them quickly differs due to the fact that a combination
of Spanish and English may be used, whereas in school or at work it is strictly English. Additionally,
physical and emotional affection is allowed to be displayed. All concerns, bottled up feelings, and
gossip can be released to this group because of the very friendly and laid- back conditions. Being a
family or friend member only requires participation into events and keeping in touch to maintain a
development of sympathy, warmth, and attachment among each other.
Discourse communities give a clear and defined role allowing us to keep our eyes on a
common goal. Although everyone in the community may have different levels of expertise, they all
meet at one point or another becoming a collective intellect. Yet, no goals would be achieved unless
the communication was not ideal by taking into account rhetoric knowledge, talking to a priest will
highly differ than to talking to a professor. The context, voice, genre, purpose, audience, and
conventions must be taken into account to make powerful arguments within the discourse
communities. Without discourse communities, the world would be unorganized, fortunately, they can
all be applied to our professional, civic, academic and personal parts of our life to fulfill common
goals.
