PROPOSAL

By Charlotte Westall
TITLE OF PRODUCTION:
The title of my documentary will be Eerie Silence.

CHANNEL:
The channel I will be airing my documentary on is
Channel 4 because similar documentaries about
deafness have already been featured on the channel.
The reason why I chose for my documentary to be aired
on Channel 4 and E4 is that the channel features
documentaries that arent too serious to be a BBC
documentary also the formats of the documentary are
either participatory or interactive, which is the formats
that I will be using for my documentary.

SUBJECT IDEA:
The subject idea I have for my documentary is that it is
based on the topic of deafness. The different sections
of my documentary will be in one of the forms of
communication that deaf people use which is sign
language then it will change to subtitles and then it will
be in complete speech. In my documentary it will
feature parts of my experiences of being deaf, and will
be pictures of me as a baby having the operation. Also
it will feature interviews from the parents and experts. I
will be including an experiment of getting people to
wear soundproof headphones to get a feel of what it is
like to be deaf. I will give people on the streets ear
defenders just so they can experience everyday
experiences like having a conversations and crossing
the road whilst they cant hear. During my documentary

I will put a surprise audio drop but will keep the audio
running to give the audience a feel what it is like to not
hear and get them to try lip read what the person is
saying in the video.

INDENDED AIM:
The intended aim of my documentary is that it is about
deafness and how they see the world with this
disability. The reason why I chose to do this topic for my
documentary is because it is very personal to me as I
am profound deaf meaning that I have a cochlear
implant and I wanted to create a documentary on this
topic to raise awareness to the audience on this
disability to make them aware of the traditional
stereotypes they may face and what struggles they
may face in their day to day lives. As not everyone I
have ever known really knew about the disability of
deafness so I decided to make a documentary on
deafness so those people I meet can watch to get a full
insight to the disability.

AUDIENCE:
The results I gained from the survey that I created to
investigate the target audience for my topic of
deafness. I found that 80% of the population that I
asked said that they would watch a documentary about
the topic of deafness whilst the other 20% said that
they might watch the documentary. In the survey I
asked a question What type social class demographic
would the topic of the documentary appeal to" and the
results I gained were that 30% said Class E, 30% said
Class C2, 20% said Class B, 10% said Class A and 10%
said Class C1 meaning that the target audience social
demographic would be mainly be Class E & and Class

C2. In my survey I asked what type age demographic

would be interested in watching a documentary on
deafness' I found that 40% of the people that I asked
said that the age range would be 25-26 would be much
more interested in watching the documentary. The
results I gained from my survey about what gender
would be more likely to watch the documentary and I
received 90% of the people I asked in the survey said
that both genders would be equally interested in
watching the documentary on deafness. From the
survey I found that the target audience of my
documentary on deafness tends to have professions
from the Class E & and C2 band.

FORMAT:
The format of my documentary will be a participatory
documentary because even though it will feature facts
and figures about the overall topic to introduce the
basis to deafness as a whole but it will also feature
parts of my experiences of being deaf, and will feature
pictures of me as a baby having the operation. It will
feature my personal experiences growing up with the
disability and in my documentary I will feature an
experiment to give an extra feel towards the audience
of how it feels to be deaf.

GENRE:
The genre of my documentary is that it is an
infotainment because the documentary is a bit factual
yet a bit entertaining because of the pictures shown
when myself will be telling my story and also when the
experiment is shown. Throughout my documentary

there will be lots of visuals to back up what the voiceovers will be saying.

STYLE:
The documentary style my documentary will be a
participatory/interactive documentary because the
presenter of the documentary gets involved in the
documentary when telling their personal story about
their experiences of being profound deaf. My
documentary is also a narrativisation and realist
because the documentary is based on a real life
situation meaning my experiences with the disability
and it follows a narrative structure.

BUDGET:
The budget for this production will be overall 1481. To
hire a Sony HDR-Z1E HDV Camera for this production is

contract hire meaning it could cost totalling of 9801130 for a crew hire. All together the budget totals to
for equipment and crew hire is 1410.

cost 4.80 each or a return so in total the train would
cost in total is 48. All together the budget for the
