Step #1 - Paraphrase (4-5 Sentences)

This article is so touching and cute and really shows how much swing dancing can
impacts people's lives. It is mainly about two people who meet each other through swing
dancing and become best friends. After some time and lots of dancing, they learn to fall
in love and swing dancing is one of the main components in their lives. They prove
through their relationship that swing dancing is still important and just as well
known/used as it used to be in the 1920s.
Step #2: Explicating
1. State the main point of the commencement address in one or two sentences:
Swing dancing can bring people together and is used just as often and is just as popular.
2. Give examples of the meaning by tying it to concrete situations in the real world:
Things can bring two people together
3. Generate metaphors, analogies, pictures, or diagrams of the basic thesis to
connect it to other meanings you already understand.
Step #3: Analyzing the Logic of What we are Reading
One important skill for understanding an essay, article or chapter is through the analysis of the
parts of the authors reasoning. Once you have done this, you can then evaluate the authors
reasoning using intellectual standards. Here is a template to follow.
1. The main purpose of this article is to show how swing dancing is the reason this
couple fell in love and how often they would go swing dancing. This shows many things
including the way swing dancing shapes people, how widely known it is, and how much
of a positive impact it has on us. (Here you are trying to state as accurately as possible
the authors purpose for writing the article. What was the author trying to accomplish?)
2. The key question that the author is addressing is how significant swing dancing
can be and how much it can impact a life.. (Your goal is to figure out the key question
that was in the mind of the author when s/he wrote the article. In other words, What was
the key question that the article addressed?)

3. The most important information in this article is the love story that brought these
two together and how swing dancing is still a widely used dance style. (You want to
identify the key information the author used, or presupposed, in the article to support
his/her main arguments. Here you are looking for facts, experiences, data the author is
using to support her/his conclusions).
4. The main inferences/conclusions in this article are how happy one can be from
swing dancing and how important it is to certain people. (You want to identify the most
important conclusions that the author comes to and presents in the article).
5. The key idea(s) we need to understand in this article is (are) How many people
are out swing dancing and how often . By these ideas the author means that it is a
widely known dance style that is often open in multiple places each night. (To identify
these ideas, ask yourself: What are the most important ideas that you would have to
understand in order to understand the authors line of reasoning? Then elaborate briefly
what the author means by these ideas).
6. The main assumption(s) underlying the authors thinking is (are) what can come
out of swing dancing, like what you can gain from it. (Ask yourself: What is the author
taking for granted (that might be questioned). The assumptions are generalizations that
the author does not think s/he has to defend in the context of writing the article, and they
are usually unstated. This is where the authors thinking logically begins).
7. If a) we take this line of reasoning seriously, the implications are that swing
dancing is widely known and accepted and loved. (What consequences are likely to
follow if people take the authors line of reasoning seriously? Here you are to follow out
the logical implications of the authors position. You should include implications that the
author states, if you believe them to be logical, but you should do your best thinking to
determine what you think the implications are.) If b) we fail to take this line of reasoning
seriously, the implications are that people just say these things for lack of words to
describe anything else they are feeling towards the situation. (What consequences are
likely to follow if people ignore the authors reasoning?)
8. The main point(s) of view presented in this article is are) . (The main question
you are trying to answer here is: What is the author looking at, and how is s/he seeing it?
For example, in this mini-guide we are looking at education and seeing it as involving
the development of intellectual skills. We are also looking at learning as the
responsibility of students.)

Step #1 - Paraphrase (4-5 Sentences)

Although Swing music does have a very happy and light mood to it, this is not to say

visions of personal freedom and generational solidarity, defined a mass youth style around
music, dance and fashion, and conveyed hopeful visions of the future"
