College Essay Prompt
If I could uninvent one invention it would be the nuclear bomb. I understand
completely that the reason for its development and use was out of desperation to
win World War II due to the Imperial Japanese great morale and the Bushido code to
never surrender which literally meant fight and dont stop fighting to the death in
honor of your country and emperor. I am glad that we do not live in a future that the
Allied forces lost WWII but I must admit that having that mindset is a pretty noble
and patriotic way to fight for your country and I even respect that at some level.
There are many reasons as to why I would uninvent the nuclear bomb. I will
begin by saying I believe it morally wrong to drop the bomb on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki despite the fact that the world was deep into a war, the number of
unnecessary losses that were given after the bombing was very saddening.
Especially since the big majority of those who died from the bombs were innocent
civilians. Yes they might have had the same views that the Imperial Army had and
would support their government and Nation but at the end of the day they are only
civilians who probably had no idea something so terrible would happen that close to
the home front, in fact in the home front exactly. If the tables were turned and we
were the ones bombed by the IJA, only then would we feel the exact pain and
suffering they did which lasted for many years after with terrible after-effects. It
simply didnt have to go that way since there are more peaceful ways to help to
bring an end to war.
To continue my reasoning for the uninventing of the nuclear bomb are the
mere repercussions that happened almost about five plus years after the war; the
Cold War. In my opinion I think the Cold war was good and bad for Americans and
the world society. Good because it pushed the progression of science to a good
extent which lead to the travel into the new frontier of space and further. It also
inspired the civil rights movement as the Cold war pushed the world into change.
However the bad for the Cold War was that it created a tension with the Soviet
Union that carries on even till today with the conflict between the US and Russia
which only seems to be getting worse. In fact I believe the Vietnam War wouldnt
have had to be fought and there could have been more hope at uniting North and
South Korea as one democratic nation. If the nuclear bomb was uninvited the idea
that any nation today with possession of nuclear arms could bomb any one nation,
causing a chain reaction of other nations retaliating against each other causing the
destruction of the world within only nine hours at least would not be possible.
In conclusion, I would uninvent the nuclear bomb if I could. I believe that such
destruction shouldnt ever be an option for anything as there are other methods of
solving problems. Destroying a city may have helped end the war, but then there
were years and years of repercussions as I explained before that was all because
the invention of the nuclear bomb.
