    AsAuntyIfeoma,Amaka,andKambilidrivearoundtheypassalargevarietyofhouses,
    fromthoseownedbythewealthierpeopletothoseownedbythepoor.Theybeginina
    middleupperclassarea,drivingpastbungalowsinwidecompoundswithrosebushesand
    fadedlawnsandfruittrees.Rosebushesandfruittrees,aswellaslawnspace,arealuxury,a
    signofstatus,especiallywhencomparedwiththetypeofhousestheydrivepastafterwards.
    Thehousesthepoorliveinaremerelyashadowofthoseownedbythewealthy,alltheyhave
    arelowbuildingssidebysideamidascatteringofstuntedshrubs.Thereisahugedichotomy
    herebetweenthedifferentclasses,withonesidethatcannotevenaffordyardspaceandthe
    othersideabletoaffordluxuryitemssuchasrosebushesandfruittrees.Thejuxtapositionof
    thedifferenthousesshowsthisdivisionveryclearly,andhelpsshowthedifferencebetweenthe
    typeofenvironmentKambililivesinversusthetypeofenvironmentAuntyIfeomalivesin.
    Thedialoguealsoexemplifiesthegapbetweentherichandthepoor.Intheentire
    passage,onlyAuntyIfeomaandherdaughterAmakaspeak,whileKambiliisalwayssilent.This
    makesherseemremovedandabovethosethatsheiswith,eitherdirectlyduetoherwealthor
    asideeffectofit.Shehaslittleexperienceinteractingwithpeopleotherthanherimmediate
    family,somakingconversationishardforher.EvenwhenAuntyIfeomaandAmakadotalk,
    however,theyspeakaboutmaterialthingssuchasthedogonyaroleaves,andtheviewfrom
    OdimHill,whileKambiliignoresthematerialthingsandsimplyruminatesaboutGod.Whilethe
    lowermiddleclasshastoworryaboutsurvivalandpracticalthingssuchasgettingenoughgas
    togettowork,theupperclassdoesnot.Theycansimplythinkaboutotherproblemssuchas

    poor.
