YLS Orientation Day

[63]

The annual highlight for every generation of UYLers, the Youth Leadership Seminar (YLS)
marked its official commencement on 21st February, 2016 this year. After eye-opening lectures
and explorations into global issues throughout GAP, Campers embarked upon their journeys of
adventures and challenges as the YLS Orientation Day was successfully held at TWGHs Wong
Fut Nam College.

The Orientation Day started off with Campers divided into 8 different groups, in which
Campers enjoyed a morning of ice-breaking games and mass games. They had the opportunity
to present their group names and group slogans after lunchtime.

Yet, Campers were not united with all their companions until after the presentation. Four
squads were formed between every two groups as Campers looked for clues relating to their
group mates around the campus. Campers enjoyed their first group time with their group mates
and group guardians, discovering much more about the people who eventually became lifelong
companions.

Following right after was the first ever group activity for the four squads. Campers were
challenged in terms of their abilities to cooperate, to communicate, and to trust their fellow
teammates. Each squad was required to complete several tasks simultaneously. With tasks
satisfactorily completed, Campers looked forward to cooperating well with one another on their
ventures ahead.

The Orientation Day was adjourned with the first family time of the YLS. With more to
expect what the future held, Campers left in joy and excitement.

YLS Workshop I

[49]

The first YLS workshop took place on 6th March, 2016 at Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu
Memorial College. Energised with fervour cheers, Campers engaged in a team-building session in
the morning. They were split into two teams among their squads, one of which were required to
use their mouths to clinch cups in order to pass water, while the other had to play a melody with
the provided glass bottles filled with water. Besides accomplishing the task as squads, Campers
also had to cooperate as a whole and let the melody fill the campus with delightful laughters.

Ending up with wet clothes, Campers managed to point out the importance of cooperation,
which came from understanding, effective communication, and commitment. Campers were
also encouraged to discover and create beauty in every difficult situation ahead and turn tears into
joyous memories.

In the afternoon, Campers showcased their creativity and adaptability through an impromptu
session. Given a random object and topic, they had to give a one-minute speech instantly. In
the session, Campers were given advice on their speech delivery technique. Their confidence and
creativity were also stimulated.

Following that, an apocalypse that infected some Campers was simulated. Campers, having
had to find cure within limited time, decided their own fate as the infected ones opted whether
to surrender. Campers kept their eyes shut and struggled between keeping themselves safe and
sacrificing for the sake of the majority. Through this session, Campers were asked to reflect on
their choices between personal and public interest. The importance of teamwork and worthy
sacrifices was stressed. Light entered their eyes once again.

YLS Workshop II

[35]

Two weeks since they had last met with Heredes, on 20th March, 2016 Campers gathered
again at Wah Yan College, Kowloon.

After warming up, we were honoured to be joined by Ms. Tai Sum Sum, owner of Sum
Sum Dessert. Ms. Tai started her online business at the age of 20 out of sheer passion about
making desserts. Loyal to her dreams and with unceasing hard work, she has now expanded
her business into renowned bricks-and-mortar shops. Ms. Tai shared her dreams and creativity
ambition with Campers and Committee members. Her story was an enlightened one; Campers
gained valuable insights and were encouraged to be fearless in the pursuit of dreams. Dreams, are
not unreachable.

Returning from lunch, Campers found the atmosphere greatly different: all Committee
members had been absent. Soon realising they had to accomplish tasks with neither guidance nor
assistance from Committee members, Campers looked for checkpoints around the campus and
returned with stronger confidence in themselves. The session reminded them to gradually take up
more responsibilities and learn to stand as an independent individual capable of being a leader.

One, Two, Three, Cheese!

The next session might not be among the most thrilling ones, but probably the most
memorable. The photo taking session of Campers has been a tradition for the past few cohorts.
Campers, in eye-catching red OUTSTANDING t-shirts, were captured in their best smiles spelling
out 24 and UYL on the lawn. The magic of unity among UYLers had, once again, fallen upon
them as the shutter closed.

Form a circle! Form, form a circle!

The Workshop ended up in the harmonious voices of Campers singing the heart-warming
Union song. Campers had gained more confidence and had adequate preparation for the upcoming
journey to Ezorion. What would happen next?

Journey to Ezorion

[26/23]

Its a whole new world.

Set in Wu Kwai Sha Youth Vil age, here comes the highlight of the 24th YLS, the journey to
Ezorion. The moment when Campers left Maryknoll Convent School and got into the UYL bus on
29th March, the journey begun.

Following adventures to fight for food on Day 1 afternoon, Campers presented their mascots
and human settlement proposals and models. Campers, apart from fluently delivering what they
had prepared in advance, were also able to solve the problems raised by the authorities and had
demonstrated thorough consideration. The talent show that followed was surely another eye-opening
session as diversified performances were shown, including dramas, singings and dancings. Judges of
Ezorion were impressed by the creativity of Campers and showed compliments for their efforts.

The climax of Day 1 was the Night Tracing, during which Campers had to explore around
Ezorion by mere guidance by dim lamp posts. While Ezorion remained to be largely an unknown,
Campers accomplished checkpoint tasks and earned points by doing so. WIth enough points for
materials needed in the Fashion Show, the night was surely a thril ing experience allowing them to
explore the undersea city. The day was ended with their Family Time.
Starting Day 2 was the Fashion Show after a night of intensive designing and hard work with materials
earned from the Night Tracing. Camper enjoyed a wonderful session filled with great creativity and
eagerness to show their fellow companions their products.
Following the Fashion Show and several mass games, Campers were separated from their squads
and completed complicated tasks alone. Scattered around the campus, Campers eventually reunited
with their squads and understood the essence of being a team-player: cooperation.
Soon after every squad had gathered their every group mate, here came the dinner. Squads settled
in the barbeque site and enlightened the warm fire. Campers shared not only food, but also laughter
and joy despite the light rain.
The amusement went on with a campfire

RUN! Someone has been found dead!

One of the most exhilarating parts of the day came after the fake campfire. The Detective Game
started with the discovery of a dead body who was poisoned to death. Campers then returned to
the base and began their investigations. They were given information about all residents in Ezorion and
visitors from Heredes.
Misfortune did not come alone. Half an hour after the first dead body had been found, another death
was reported. They rushed to the crime scene and returned to the base again for yet another round
of inspection.
It might had been the most anxious night for the residents living in Ezorion. Breaking news of murders
kept spreading in Ezorion while Campers were nervously looking into the cases. The series of deaths
had not ceased until late night.

No more Heredes. No more chaos. Morning breezes peacefully enjoyed, the whole plot
was revealed, and everything returned normal. Campers engaged in Life Monopoly on Day 3, in
which each Squad represented a family. Phase I of the Monopoly was an individual session, during
which Campers were required to accomplish individual tasks given on their identity cards. Each family
member ran across checkpoints accomplishing tasks and fought hard for their own goals and for the
sake of the entire family.
After the morning Phase I of the Monopoly, it came the classic of all, XY Game, in which Campers
were on the horns of dilemma they had to make choices and make wild guesses of the other
squads moves. It was not only a chance for Campers to earn more, but, most important of all, also
a time to make decisions for the common good.
After reuniting with other squad members, the Monopoly resumed and proceeded to Phase II, in
which Campers had to achieve their individual goals as well as their family goal: to develop a family
business. In the Monopoly, apart from having to strike a balance between personal and squad interests,
Campers too realised their own worth and worked as a whole in order to achieve their aims.
The last night in Ezorion was for sure an unforgettable one: Campers were invited to the picnic to
enjoy chips and biscuits as their dinner. After that, Campers, Committee members, and fellow alumni
were gathered in the Campfire. Lighting up the night with neon sticks, a very large circle was formed
and Committee members led various new cheers. The atmosphere engages every UYLer who was
devoted to chanting at their best.

P-A-R-T-Y! Party Partys on my side!

Where is the Party? The Partys over here!

The night continued with a wild and feverish Disco Night. Superb dances and neon sticks were
everywhere in the packed room with loud music. After the rave, reminiscent music were played when
Campers recalled their memories, reminding them to treasure the once-in-a-lifetime moments they
had been through in their UYL journeys. The night at last ended with the Alumni Sharing session.
The homecomers shared their own experiences in the Union and encouraged Campers to carry on
their invaluable life-changing journeys. Finally, Campers went back to the dormitory and started their
last Family Time in the YLS.

In the last morning, the Trust Game was held. Campers were divided into four new groups,
in which they had to cooperate with other teammates. By using toothpicks, blindfolded Campers had
to spell out the word HKUYL by listening to others instruction. This session hoped to encourage
Campers to learn to trust, listen, as well as care about one another, no matter whether they were
in the Union, at school, at home, or anywhere else. Last but not least, the sharing session before
departure gave Committee members an opportunity to share their innermost feelings and empower
Campers to persevere on their upcoming CCC journey by giving useful advice for them to reflect
on. All the tears Committees and Campers shed would pay off.

Departing back for Earth, Campers, at the upper deck of the UYL Bus, passionately cheered the
wild classics of chants Little Cabin in the Woods, How Funky Is Your Chicken?, I Said from East
to West etc. The entire bus was filled with energy and cheerfulness despite the restless days. Finally,
Campers sang the Union Song on the Bus and this marked the end of the Ezorion journey.

One day your whole life will flash before your eyes,
make sure its worth watching.
Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, you
can always achieve in this place.

Maybe something just dont get better, but we do. We

get stronger. We learn to live with out situations as messy

and as crazy as they are. We fix what we and we adapt

to what we cant. Maybe some of us will never be fully

okay, but at least, we are here. We are still trying. We
:)

are doing the best we can. Thats worth celebrating too.

You can make it.
