Critical incident reflection

Critical incident date:

Description
Whole staff PD. On Monday the 30th of November, the staff of Lumen Christi gathered for a
PD on assessment. Throughout the day there were various activities that were undertaken
such as analysing the NAPLAN tests and scores and discussing ways that teaching could be
undertaken in a more holistic way. (100 words)
Interpretation
This incident was critical to me for many reasons. Firstly, as the groups were mixed up I was
not with my AT for most of the day. This allowed me to get to know other staff members
within the school and put me completely out of my comfort zone. For the most part I could
not contribute to the conversation aside from asking questions here and there to be an active
participant. However, I feel that I have learnt so much from this one day. I learned a lot about
maths assessments, and how the questions that NAPLAN asks. I learnt how educators
brainstorm and bounce ideas off each other, each bringing their own experiences to the table.
And I learnt how educators discus what works and what does not work to create a better
learning environment for students. (200 words)

Outcome
I feel that I left this PD with a new perspective on teaching. It is not just learning to be a
teacher and then stoping your own education along the way. Being an educator is about
constantly trying to find ways to improve, how to help those who might not be learning a lot
with one certain technique. How to use your peers to collaborate and find new ways of
teaching and helping students. Also through looking at learning as a process, rather than
saying fail, saying not yet provides hope and encouragement for students future learning.
