Thisisimportantbecausetimeisnotspenttryingtofigureoutthewords,butinfocusing
onthemeaningofwhatisbeingread.Studieshavedemonstratedacloserelationship
betweenfluencyandreadingcomprehension.

Vocabulary

Comprehensionistheessentialoutcomeinreadingandcannotbeunderstoodwithouta
strongvocabularybase.Vocabularyincludesunderstandingwhatwordsmeanwhenwe
seetheminwrittenmaterials,likebooks,orunderstandingwordsthatpeopleusein
conversation.

WhatDoesitLookLike?
Childrencanshowtheyhavestrongvocabularyskillsby:
Recognizingthatanewwordbeingreadisonetheyhaveheardandunderstood

Soundingoutanewword(dig)andrecallingtheyhaveheard

Comprehensionisthereasonforreading.Comprehendingwhatisreadmeansthatthe
childunderstandswhatheorshehasreadandisabletocommunicateittoothers.

InadditiontotheretellingcomponentofDIBELSNextandtheMazeofAIMSweb,
teachersinformallyevaluatecomprehensionthroughclassroomandsmallgroup
discussions.Asstudentsbegintoread,assessmentsareadministeredtoevaluatestudent
useofcomprehensionstrategieswhilereadingandtodetermineinstructionalreading
levels.
