Period 06
In the passage from Purple Hibiscus the author uses imagery and
hyperboles in order to create an image for the reader to be able to visualize
how the different classes live in Nigeria. It also allows the reader to see from
Kambilis perspective to show how she becomes aware of her fortune.
Adichie creates the image of the different classes by using imagery
in the change of the setting. From the passage she describes the scene The
street gradually lost its tarred smoothness and its cultivated hedges, and the
houses became low and narrow. She does this to show how Kambili
personally becomes aware of the change in the structure in the homes. This
help set a visual change in what was to come.
She creates an image of the positive parts of the places they were
passing to show how Aunty Ifeoma tried to focus on the positive while
everyone is still aware of the negative parts. She describes it We drove past
the sturdy trees around the faculty of engineering, past the vast mango-filled
fields around the female hostels. Aunty Ifeoma turned the opposite way
when she got close to her street. Adichie added in part to show that Aunty
tried to make it seem more visibly good for the children by showing them
the more fortunate parts of where they live.
