Polgooth Village Hall

Editorial

Hopefully residents of the village will have noticed that over the summer, the
outside of the hall has had a freshen-up with a lick of paint and some weeding
and planting. Thanks go to all those who were able to give their time and
labour. We realise that the parking area desperately needs some repair and
improvement, and this is being addressed. The inside has also started its
makeover. The old ripped curtains have been replaced with some very smart
new ones and this has already greatly improved the appearance inside. We
continue to strive to develop the hall with the hope of making it more
appealing to prospective hirers.
We have already applied for a number of grants and are waiting to see if any
have been successful. Our intention is to replace the blown double glazed units
and we even hope to get sufficient funds to replace the heating and hot water
systems (see article P34).
We have many regular user groups who hire the hall including a baby and
toddler group, two ladies groups, film club, keep fit, monthly bingo, among
others, all who would welcome new members. The hall committee also arrange
one off events that are advertised around the village. We have recently enjoyed
quiz evenings, music evenings, a skittles night and even dragon racing! At our
latest meeting we were discussing plans for the annual Christmas Fayre
complete with Father Christmas grotto, which will be held on 12th December.
Come along and buy some presents and enjoy a soup lunch.
By the time you read this edition of the Polgooth Times, the Polgooth
Pantomime Players will have held an evening of musical entertainment
including guests St Mewan School Community Choir.
If you are planning a birthday party, social gathering, anniversary bash or even
a business function, please do consider hiring the hall. Our rates are extremely
reasonable and any booking enquiries can be made to Michele Taylor on 01726
73150.
The committee meets once every two months on a Monday evening. We are a
very friendly bunch and the meetings are very informal. We would warmly
welcome anyone who would like to come along and join us, you do not have to
wait for an AGM to join, just show up at any meeting. Our next meeting is on
Monday 9th November at 7.30pm in the hall. If you do not feel you can attend
the meetings but would like to contribute any ideas or suggestions on how the
hall can continue to be a success, please feel free to contact me on 01726

Hello everyone and welcome to Polgooth Times No 133. As I was preparing this
Editorial it occurred to me that issue No 135 will be celebrating thirty five years of the
Polgooth Times; this is quite an amazing achievement for a magazine that is run and
produced entirely by volunteers and funded solely by our advertisers. I hope that we
will be able to mark this anniversary with a bumper issue if as many people as possible
could send me their own thoughts on living in Polgooth and their memories associated
with the village. Any contribution would be great however small.

As you will read in Garrys article (see page 34), the improvements to the hall are all
gradually taking place. We are very grateful for the funding received to date, but do
still need help towards the heating and any suggestions as to how this can be achieved
will be gratefully received.
The film club is great and I hope the audiences will continue to increase; compare the
cost with going to the cinema in St Austell and having to pay for parking and you will
appreciate what good value the evening is. At the same time you will be helping
towards the upkeep of the Village Hall. A raffle is always held on Film Club night, if
anyone would like to donate a prize or even leave a small contribution towards the
prizes, please do so via the red box in the Post Office.
The childrens club on Friday evenings is unfortunately not running at the moment. Im
sure Karina would like to re-start it, but needs some help from adult volunteers, so if
you have a Friday evening spare, maybe a rota could be established to help; Im sure
there are many children in the village that are missing their night out and would be
grateful. If you would like to contact Karina her number is 07866 204747.
I would also like to hear from anyone that maybe interested in tracing their roots. If
you fancy forming part of an informal group exploring the realms of Genealogy, I am
happy to establish a group in 2016, by which time I hope I may have secured a
purchaser for my house and will have moved to Polgooth. I may not have the
experience of a researcher on the popular TV programme Who Do You Think You Are
but my passionate interest is family history which I have explored for many years.

By the time this magazine is read Christmas will be only five or six weeks away,
so I will take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and New
Year. I plan to be enjoying a barbeque on the beach, not in wet Cornwall, but in
New Zealand visiting one of my children.

Sunny Scotland!
It was with a little trepidation that my husband and I paid
our first ever visit to Scotland in September. Scotland, as
with Cornwall, has the reputation of having more than
significant rainfall!
We booked in at a campsite on the northern banks of Loch
Lomond - a brave last minute decision, especially as good
weather by this time was not on the list of guarantees!
We were accompanied by the dreaded weather on our long
journey there - until we reached the southern tip of the
Loch. From then onwards we were blessed - and I mean
blessed - with the most amazing sights and experiences.
The sun showed up and shot its rays onto the sea of
glass (which incidentally we could see from our
accommodation). It perfectly mirrored the scenes
surrounding it and the awesome blue sky and white cloud
formations hovering away above the mountainous skyline..
Breathtakingly amazing!
We arrived a little early for the autumn colours which
transform the vista at this time of year, but if heaven
encapsulates what we have just experienced we have much
to look forward to.

Cornwall Adoption Information Morning - November

Families for Children are looking for adopters to come forward now.
There is no upper age limit for adoption, you can be married or single
and you dont have to own your own home. We are looking for people
who have the room in their hearts and can offer a loving and secure
family to children most in need. We are especially looking for those who
may consider older children (over 4 years), sibling groups and children
with disabilities.

Late in August the Government published its review into the Feed
in Tariff (the Government support mechanism for Renewable
Energy installations) and is proposing to cut the rates by as much
as 87%. The new proposed rates are scheduled to come into force
on 1st January 2016.

can talk with our specialist adoption social workers and experienced
adoptive parents about all aspects of adoption. If you have ever

Age UK Minibus to Truro

The Solar PV (solar electric) industry has been a victim of its own
success by installing far more systems in the last three years than
anyone could have imagined. The effect of this success is that the
pot of money accrued to support the incentives is fast running out.
The rate payable for domestic energy generated is proposed to be
cut from 12.47p per kWh to just 1.63p per kWh. With the price of
installing Solar PV continuing to drop and the cost of buying
electricity rising there is still a good financial argument to install
Solar PV but, obviously, those who register their Solar PV
installations for the feed in Tariff before the 31st December will reap
higher benefits.
KEY TIP if you are considering installing Solar PV - do not wait,
contact an installer now as there is going to be a rush on the
industry causing a potential shortage of materials and labour up to
the end of the year.
The team at Stellar Solar are already reporting a large rise in the
number of enquiries, many requesting an early installation date.
The consultation document further proposes to reduce tariffs for
commercial Solar PV installations but other renewable energy
technologies have been spared the hatchet for the time being.

The Age UK Minibus to Truro no longer runs. The funding

needed to keep the bus running was withdrawn. Age UK asked
for 65.00 to run the bus to Truro and back. The pensioners
that used this service could not meet the price asked.

POLGOOTH PANTOMIME 2016

PRODUCTION
Over the winter, Polgooth Pantomime Players are busy rehearsing
their 2016 production Mother Goose which will run in the hall
from Tues 16th to Sat 20th February 2016 (half term week).
This traditional pantomime (with a few modern twists!) sees Mother
Goose and her Head Hen Man Basil battling the evil property
developer Jasper Deville and his son Junior who want to knock
down the NurseryRhymeLanders cottages to build an urban
development DeVillage.
Daisy May the goose girl stumbles into their midst bringing
Egglantine a goose with attitude and a special gift!
As the tale unfolds we meet Fairies Liquid and Nightshade, Jack and
Jill, Mother Goose hapless children and Mavis and Phyllis, two
somewhat unlikely hench(wo)men as well as a host of other
characters.

Polgooth Film Club

Since the last issue of the Polgooth Times, Polgooth Film Club has
had two more film showings, and has settled into its regular slot of
the first Thursday of the month.
On 3rd September, our second largest audience of 29 thoroughly
enjoyed the inspiring story of Alan Turings breaking of the Enigma
machine in The Imitation Game. It secured the highest rating of all
the films shown so far, with an average of 9.71. On 1st October,
twenty new and existing members turned up to watch James Bonds
23rd outing, Skyfall. This was another film that went down well,
with a rating of 9. By the time you read this, we will have probably
had our October half term showing of Paddington and November 5th
showing of Jurassic World. Take a look at the film club website to
see how these films were rated.
Since the start of the club in May, sixty five people have signed up.
After the initial cost of refreshments was paid off, the club has now
managed to raise 100 for village hall funds. If you would like to
join our growing number of members, help raise much needed funds
for the hall, and watch a variety of different films on the big screen,
just come along to any film showing. Membership costs just 5 for
the year, including entry to the film on the evening you join. Future
showings for the rest of the year will then only cost 3 (2 for 65+
and under 16s).

Looking at the streets and roads in Polgooth and the

fact that they are no longer treated with weedkiller
would it not be in everyones interest to be
encouraged to remove the weeds by our own properties
it only takes a few minutes with a hoe and broom) to
keep the village streets looking cared for with the
added advantage that when we have heavy rain the water
can find the drains without flooding the roads.

Decembers showing on Thursday 3rd is likely to be Its a

Wonderful Life, a Christmas-themed film (of course!) and very
much a classic. Hopefully, a childrens showing of Frozen is also

For our July meeting we welcomed Mike Pascoe a volunteer from

Help for Heroes. He gave a very interesting insight into the
wonderful work carried out by the charity to provide help and care
for ex-servicemen wounded in battle. The charity was started in
2007 by Bryn Parry and his wife Emma, since when many millions
of pounds have been donated and used for support and practical
help for the injured. There are four rehabilitation centres and the
nearest one to Cornwall is at Plymouth opened by the Duke of
York. The cost was 23 million pounds .The centre consists of two
buildings. The first, Parker VC (named after the first person
admitted), is an accommodation block with six family cabins and
sixty single cabins. The second block, called Endeavour, houses a
gym, swimming pool and medical centre. So much support given
to raise the welfare and confidence of these deserving cases is to
be praised and worthy of our support by donations.
We did not hold a meeting in August and the September meeting
celebrated our harvest with a pasty Supper.
We now look forward to a full winter programme and invite any
interested ladies to join us on the last Tuesday each month at
7.30pm in the Village Hall.

Polgooth Village Hall improvements

As I wrote earlier in the year, the village hall committee wanted to make a number of
improvements to the building this year. We compiled a list of things that we wanted to
replace or renew and it was then a matter of finding the time and volunteers to carry
them out.
In April, both rooms in the hall were given a thorough clean and then, in June, a group of
eight volunteers started painting the exterior of the building with paint kindly donated by
Tim Warren through BK Coatings. The front and south facing walls were painted, with
the others due to be done in the spring. It really brightens up the building and makes it
look a more appealing place. Steve Thornhill was kept busy indoors replacing mirrors in
the toilets and resealing the sinks. The interior of the building is due to be painted in
November.
The other improvements that we wanted to make required significant amounts of money,
and were not things regular hall funds could afford. Our first priority was to improve the
heating of the hall. Ever since two of the heaters failed, each room has been functioning
on only one heater. They will heat the room eventually, but it takes some time for them
to do so, particularly in the depths of winter. We thought it would be much more
beneficial to get a full central heating system installed which could be easily controlled
rather than simply buy two new heaters. Another advantage of this is that we can make
use of the solar panels during the day to heat the halls water. We currently dont benefit
from the free electricity produced as the hall is not often used during the day. A number
of windows also have broken seals which means not only are they not effectively
keeping in heat but they also dont look very nice for anyone viewing the hall.
Im pleased to say that we have successfully secured 1300 from the Cornwall
Community Foundation to pay for the new sealed units. By the time you read this, they
should hopefully already be in place. A couple of weeks later, we were pledged 1500
from Bernard Sunley towards the central heating. With the whole cost being around
6000-7000, we are now halfway towards that target, taking into account our current
finances. Several weeks will have passed before you read this, so we may have secured
further funding by then, but if you have any ideas for how we can secure additional
funds, please do get in touch.
One thing that also desperately needed doing was replacing the curtains, which had
become very tatty. A very kind donation from the Polgooth Times of 500 meant that
this could become a reality. It improves the inside of the hall significantly, and makes
preparing for a film showing so much easier as they successfully block out light!
The next plan once the heating is taken care of is to get the car parking space at the front
of the building properly resurfaced. This is now causing problems with big pot holes
having formed and users of the hall or shop trying to avoid it, making the very limited
parking even worse. If you would like to be involved in any of these projects, or if you

It is with sadness I must report the death of my father, Geoffrey
Somerville, on Sunday 27th September.
He and my mum Sheila moved to Polyear Close in 1980, and had many
happy years there before mum sadly died in 1990. Dad kept himself
busy, especially with painting, and entered a few local shows with them,
even winning a cup or two!
But the last 18 months have been difficult, and last October he went to
live at Averlea. My husband and I saw him on his 86th birthday on 24th
September, and he was bright as a button.
We shall always remember him as he was that day, and because we
have been coming to your village for the last 35 years, it strikes us both
that you are a lovely village, and my parents were so lucky to live there
in their twilight years. I hope we shall continue to visit in the future.

This actually happened to an Englishman in France who was

totally drunk.
A French policeman stops the Englishmans car and asks if he
has been drinking.
With great difficulty, the Englishman admits that he has been
drinking all day, that his daughter got married that morning
and that he drank champagne and a few bottles of wine at the
reception and many single malt scotches thereafter.
Quite upset, the policeman proceeds to breath test the
Englishman and verifies that he is indeed totally sloshed.
He asks the Englishman if he knows why, under French law, he
is going to be arrested?
The Englishman answers with a bit of humour, No sir, I do not!
But while were asking questions, do you realize that this is a
British car and that my wife is driving.on the other side?

The St Austell Food Bank

Schools, churches, business and individuals in the St Austell area donate
non perishable foods to the Bank where it is sorted by volunteers into
date and category. It is then available to those in need. Professional
agencies, such as doctors, social workers, health workers, police and
Citizens Advice Bureau can issue a voucher to enable an emergency
issue of a three day food parcel to be collected from the Food Bank.
The St Austell bank is situated in the Life and Light Centre, Brunel
Business Park, Unit 4 which is situated in The Sidings off Polkyth Road
with satellite centres in Par and Roche and food is collected throughout
the area and brought to the St Austell bank to be sorted.
The St Austell Food Bank is part of a country wide organisation called
The Trussell Trust which works in partnership with local churches and
organisations to provide the desperately needed food banks to
communities across the UK. There are currently over 400 food banks
operating from the North of Scotland to Cornwall. In 2014 over 900,000
adults and children received emergency food from the banks, an increase
from 62,000 in 2011!

We all think of refugees and famine in foreign parts when we think of

hunger but the need is also here in our own community, where families
and individuals, perhaps through illness, unemployment or benefit
delays, find themselves and their families in need of help and rely on us
as caring neighbours for help. A tin is only small change to most of us,
but could be dinner to someone who is hungry and in need.
The St Austell Food Bank is now working with the START Clothing Bank,
situated alongside it at the Life and Light Centre and they welcome
donations of clean used clothing.
Polgooth Chapel has been actively collecting food gifts for the Food Bank
since last year and donations can be taken to the Chapel on the first
Monday of each month between 10.30 am and 12.00 noon. All gifts will
be gratefully received.

Children were asked their opinion about the park in the last parish survey so these views
have been taken into account but we will also find ways to ensure children get involved
in the refurbishments as much as possible. Once weve got all the costs and worked out
what we can afford to do!
Other things your Parish Council is responsible for:
allotments, cemeteries, bus shelters, community centres, village halls, drainage, local
entertainment and arts, footpaths and bridleways, general community benefit things
(there is money and various grants for a wide range of things), street lights and parking
places, litter, planning (dont make decisions but have to be consulted), public loos,
parks and village greens/commons/goffin, benches, traffic calming, war memorials.
But I understand that if there is an issue that doesn't fit into this the parish can raise it
with the county if needed.

Whats your Parish Council for?

Well, you might ask that. Until recently I had no idea what the Parish Council did or
why we have them. But after joining the Cornwall branch of the Green Party recently
and becoming a committee member, I started to understand how important these very
local parts of our democracy are.
Then, lo and behold, in the last issue of the Polgooth Times, I spotted an ad for a
vacancy on St Mewan Parish Council. With no hesitation at all I put myself forward and
then ran the gauntlet of the interview process at a meeting of the Council back in
September. It wasnt too scary and I was duly elected and welcomed in.
My first meeting was an interesting affair. You can imagine that most of it was fairly
routine procedure, but it was all done properly as far as I could tell. The parish clerk (one
Larry Budge) seemed pretty on the ball and went smoothly. At one point there was a
debate about a question from a Sticker resident who wanted advice as to whether he
would be allowed to take down a tree that was preventing lorries from getting to his
property. I had a little chuckle when one councillor said: Watch out, the Green Party
wont like us chopping down trees. I promptly responded: Thats okay. Were for
people as well as trees.
Since the meeting Ive got involved with a couple of important local developments. One
is the new defibrillator thats appeared recently on the side of the Post Office in Polgooth
(theres one in Sticker and one in Trewoon too). The Parish Council has arranged for
these to be put in and pays for the annual upkeep. The devices are very clever as they
can only be opened remotely by a 999 operator after a call has been put through and
theyve established that a person is at risk of dying. They then talk you through how to
use it and the machine pretty much does all the work itself! Having said that, its really
useful to have a few people in the village who are trained and confident to go ahead and
make the call to use one. So on 26 October we arranged for a training session at
Polgooth Village Hall. Its nice to know there are people around who have got your back
in case of dire need.
On a jollier note, Ive helped out with looking at plans for improving the playing field
and playground in Polgooth. A group of us councillors visited the park on a misty
evening in September to consider what to do best as Polgooths playing field hasnt had
much investment in recent years. The consensus was that it mainly needs a lot of
refurbishing and repainting as most of the kit is still in good working order. As a Green I
would certainly not be in favour of scrapping it all and buying new if its still
serviceable. One thing we are almost certain to do is to replace the baby seats on the
swings as they are rusty and not really suitable for tiny ones to use. We had a good chat
about the roundabout as, although ancient, it would be almost impossible to buy one like
it now. One of the specialist play park companies had a look at it and said we would be
mad to get rid of it as nothing new would last even half as long. So the plan is to see
what it would cost to repair the bearings (to make it turn more smoothly) and to
resurface around the base of it where it gets very muddy and wet at times. We might also
look into moving the wooden fort (is it a fort? Im never quite sure) from the goffin
into the main play area.

Cornwall Hospice Care

Light up a LifeRemembering Loved Ones at Christmas
Cornwall Hospice Cares annual Light up a Life campaign has just been
launched with five services of remembrance happening across the county
during November and December. This much loved hospice campaign
offers everyone the opportunity to remember loved ones at this special
time of year by entering their names in the books of remembrance and
joining us at one of the celebration services. It is completely up to you
whom you choose to remember in this way, whether its a friend, family
member or work colleague. They dont have to have been cared for by the
hospice in order for you to make a dedication.
We are currently taking entries for Light up a Life. Leaflets can be picked
up from any of our charity shops and at both hospices from mid-October
onwards, or simply call the fundraising office on 01726 66868 for a form
to be sent to you.
The celebration services offer the chance to come together with family
and friends to remember the lives of those we have lost. The first service
will take place at Truro Cathedral on Thursday 26th November at 7pm
followed by St Julias Hospice on Sunday 29th November, 4.30pm; St
Marys Church Launceston on Wednesday 2 nd December at 4pm; Mount
Edgcumbe Hospice on Sunday 6th December at 4.30pm and at Chapel
Street Methodist Church, Launceston on Wednesday 2 nd December at
4pm.
