Examples and outcomes of Poor Communication

Many tend to live life

with selective
perspective- choosing
what we accept to belief
because it is consistent
with our values. This in
turn causes us to create
closure on a topic and
fill in gaps of uncertainty
with our preconceived
notions of what we
already know. This is
how we tend to get
stereotypes, the fear of
the unknown and other terrible things. (Simmons War, what is it good for?). This leads to poor
communication.

The way perceived messages or ideas affects us greatly. The self-serving bias can make it
especially difficult for managers to talk to employees about performance problems. (Williams pg.
315). We must learn to have self-control of our self-serving bias and realize that we are not
always right. Every person is unique in their own way and dealing with differences is difficult
because of the large pool diversity we have in our community. We must learn to manage
diversity through diversity paradigms such as discrimination and fairness paradigms, access
and legitimacy paradigms or learning and effectiveness diversity paradigms.

Example(s) of a team that possessed all the

necessary ingredientstalent, initial desire, and so
forthbut, for some reason, just never clickedThe soccer club QPR (Queens Park Rangers) had great
financial support from their new owner. They were signed with

a new manager to the team with football stars, training coaches, new ground etc. In spite of
great success initially, they later fell apart.
a. What went wrong? There was too much conflict of interest, miscommunications, and
personal desire/ motivation combined with the pressure to win big games that would
affect the future impact of the team. The team got stuck in the forming and storming
stages of team development because they were working towards their own individual
goals and not towards the goals of the team. They were letting personal conflicts come
before team success.
b. What would you recommend a new team do to avoid such a fate? The team was not
ready for a top to bottom transition of the whole organization. The board members and
fans wanted quick results. There was not enough time to go through the three crucial
stages of team development that would lead to the Performing stage of success. With
the pressure mounting, conflicts were created amongst the management team and
players for when things went wrong. They also bought star players to a team that had
just moved to Division 1. This decision created unbalance between them and other
players. Team members need to take the time to get to know their teammates so that
they can learn to respect those that they play with, and become truly committed to
wanting the other to succeed and working towards a team goal. (Ahmed DVC College
Improvement Report).

Disadvantages of personal use of internet in office.

So much of the last decade's productivity gains can be attributed to the Internet. However, while
the Internet offers e-mail, e-commerce and research tools, it also opens more avenues for
employee distraction, ranging fromentertainment and shoppingto the offensive, such as
gambling and pornography. They also lead the company devices being hacked for confidential
business documents. As a result, the web is fostering both lost productivity and more serious
problems, among them hostile workplace lawsuits. (Ahmed No more Social Websites!)

Tiffany Teegardin discusses a solution in her blog about Work Portals:

Heres the problem:
Most companies are not enforcing a Code of Conduct that their employees must follow. They
are not taking control by setting organizational standards and goals for their employees to follow

and they are not taking corrective action when their employees do not follow codes of conduct
or standards.
Lets not place blame on the employees:
Companies put a lot of self-control onto their employees. When put in front of a computer,
employees are constantly subjected to the ideas of social networking, shopping, and reading up
on the latest news articles. Its not just the young employees, even older employees have a hard
time refraining from such activities.
Companies need to start implementing a new system. A system that many companies are
already using, like my own workplace:

The idea is simple and very easy.

Create a workplace portal. This portal will give you access to all the resources that your
employees need. They may check their schedule, check global communications, place orders,
receive orders, complete inventory, etc. Employees can also communicate with each other
within the portal.

A good tool to bring into the workplace would be google chromebooks. These run through
internet only and require each employee to use their own email (set through the company) Each
Chromebook has apps, which the top management can set based on the company needs. They
can make an app for their portal and any other tools that would be vital to the employees use.
These chromebooks could eliminate the unnecessary internet use that we see every day in the
workplace.
Although this will make tremendous changes, companies will then need to figure out how to
conquer the use of internet through cell phones in the workplace. By setting and enforcing a
Code of Conduct through a great deal of control through management, it is possible to reach a
minimal use of the internet for personal reasons.

With Technology comes power

In her blog, Technology is best when it brings people together-Matt
Mullenweg, Chelsea Simmons discusses how the power of communicating
properly can help companies survive the inevitable onslaught of new technology,
and make them stronger than ever.

Businesses constantly have to restructure their companies and update their products and
technologies to keep up with the constant change of the technology world around
them. Companies either make it or they drown trying to keep up with the times. If companies
cannot get behind the times, they might experience what is known as technological lockoutwhere they can no longer competitively offer their products and services because others have a
competitive edge due to technology.
You can always hire someone to help your company
For this blog, we studied up on a company called Eureka Ranch that strives to keep companies
up with the times and have a competitive advantage with others and stay ahead in the
technology field. Eureka Ranch also offers college level courses for students to be able to keep
up with the technology market and advance themselves for work or business purposes.
The key to the future
New minds that are technologically confident will lead to great design competition where old
design and technology can be reinvented into a new dominant design or standard. Those
confident in technology will have a better flow with their work- a state of effortlessness where
coding and other technological work will come easy.

With Knowledge Comes Creative Freedom

Once your employees have experienced flow, you can have a creative work environment. This
is an environment in which workers feel that new ideas are welcomed, valued and encouraged.
This will help make everyone accepting in the case of having to welcome new technological
changes- which eventually you will have to contend with.
In the Case of Change
It is implorable that your company keeps true to a vision of the change the company will be
experiencing. There should be design iteration- a cycle of competition in which a company
constantly tests and retests a new service or product prototype. You must be willing to accept a
possible resistance to change within your people- even if your company is adding something
truly better, it will be hard to understand and accept for your employees at first. Change will
mess up their routines. As a manager, you need to help them work through the belief that the
change is needed and a good thing, listen to your employees points- maybe you missed
something along the way; help them change and staying consistent- reinforcing new standards

until they become second nature. Although it might be tempting- do not coerce your employees
and do not get lax on your new decisions and procedures in spite of change being imminent.
Strong communication in the workplace will lead to greater adaptability to change.
