Fifteen-year-old Ben Pasternak sits before his Mac computer, intermittently checking updates (1) on his iPhone. Behind him
there is a biography of his idol, Steve Jobs. At the age of 14 the hopeful Sydney entrepreneur designed an iPhone game
that last week peaked at No 16 on the US app charts and No 18 on Australias.
Ben created the game Impossible Rush with teenage American tech head Austin Vallesky, who he met through a
Facebook group called Highschool Hackers. Another contact offered $35,000 to market (2) it. Ben says he has now been
offered more than $80,000 for the game. While Valleskey is working on an interactive gesture game called Veer, Ben is
now working on an app he hopes will reach No 1 globally. Titled One, the app streamlines Facebook, Instagram and
Twitter into one place, making it easier for people to check updates across different social media platforms. He has clocked
(3) 1.8 million views on his YouTube channel and has 200,000 Instagram followers.
At the age of 11, he began gathering YouTube followers as Apple addicts across the world logged on to watch what his
mum calls tech porn; the unboxing of a new Apple device. He was first in line at his local Apple store to get the iPad
mini, iPad Air and iPhone 4s when they were released (4). While he was still in primary school, tech companies were
mailing him free products to review on his YouTube channel. His entrepreneurial spirit might not come as a surprise to
those familiar with his family tree. His grandfather is a merchant banker turned toy retailer turned property developer Bob
Magid, who is estimated to be worth (5) $380 million. Bobs father, Russian immigrant Isador Magid, imported a machine
on which he produced what would become the iconic snack Twisties.
I WANT to be the *CEO of a successful **start-up (company). However, Ben says he isnt in it for the money. He wants to
make apps that are well designed and aesthetically pleasing like the Apple products he has long admired. We went to
America and we drove past the Apple headquarters and I was really inspired that it all started in a garage, he says. And
in the car I started making my next app straight away (6).

Mom Unplugged Teens for Six Months
For six months, Susan Maushart took away the Internet, TV, iPods, cell phones and video games. The disturbing (1) glow of
screens stopped lighting up the family room. Electronic devices no longer chirped through the night like evil crickets 1.
And she stopped carrying her iPhone into the bathroom. The result of "The Experiment" was more OMG (Oh My God) than
LOL (Lots of Laughs) and nothing less than an immersion in RL (Real Life).
Her son, a videogame and TV addict, filled his newfound spare time playing saxophone. The boy says that The Experiment
was merely a trigger and that he would have found his way back to music eventually (2). Either way, he got so serious
playing sax that he ended up selling his game console and is now studying music in college.
Anni, 18 then, was less wired and more bookish (3) than the others, so her transition in and out of The Experiment was the
least dramatic. It was Sussi, the youngest daughter, who had the hardest time. As Susan decided that use of the Internet,
TV and other electronics was allowed (4) outside the home, Sussy immediately moved in with her dad Susans
exhusband for six weeks. But the electronic deprivation had an impact anyway: Sussys grades improved substantially.
According to Susan, the kids "awoke slowly from their state of cognitus interruptus to become more focused logical
thinkers", and so she encourages (5) families to unplug periodically. "One way to do it is having one screen-free day a
week. Not as a punishment, but as a special thing. There isnt a kid on the planet who wouldnt really rather be playing a
board game than sitting at the computer."

When you are young (late-teens to early twenties, say), your old age seems impossibly far away. You
are not yet aware of the way in which the lengths of the years shrink, relative to your entire lifespan, as
you age. In terms of the psychological perception of the passage of time, the years pass more rapidly
as you get older; the seasons become closer together; the birthdays, anniversaries and Christmases
more frequent. Time literally seems to accelerate, and you become aware of the rapidly dwindling
timeframe you have in which to achieve your life goals.
