Discussion
Myresearchintendedtocomparetheeducationdifferencesbetweenpublicandcharter
schools.Mythesiswantedtoshowthatwhenitcomestoeducationquality,publicschoolsare
better.Therewereover100participants,andtheresultsfromtheirsurveysandinterviewswere
analyzed.Althoughmydatasupportedmythesis,thereweresomemistakeswithinmymethods,
resultinginastrongbiasfavoringpublicschools.
Mystudentresultsappeartosupportmythesis,butwithacloserlookitisclearthatthe
resultsarefairlybiasedtowardspublicschools.Mydataforthestudentsurveywasskewed
becausethequestionsfocusedonHilliardCitySchoolsandonlypublicschoolstudentswere
surveyed.Afewofthequestionsaskedaboutcharterschools,butonlyasmallminorityhad
attendedcharterschoolsinthepast.Additionally,afewofthequestionswerefollowup
questions,andtherewerestudentswhoansweredthequestionswhenitdidnotapplytothem.
Therewerepositiveresultsoverallfavoringpublicschooleducationincomparisontocharter
schools.Althoughthedatadidsupportmythesisandthesamplegroupwaslarge,thedataisvery
unreliableduetomanyinconsistenciesinthemethod.
Forteachers,Iattemptedtofindbothcharterandpublicschoolteacherstoserveasa
basisforcomparison.Theresponsesofthepublicschoolteachersweresimilarthroughout,even
thoughImadethequestionsasvagueaspossibleinhopestoobtainavarietyofanswersbased
ontheirdifferentbackgrounds.Theanswersfromthecharterschoolsidewereverydifferentin
comparison,howeveronly1charterschoolteacherwasinterviewed.Iattemptedtogetintouch
withafewmorecharterschoolteachers,butIreceivednoresponses.Thislackofcharterschool
teachersmadethedataseemverybiasedtowardspublicschoolsonceagain.

Theresultswerethemostvariedwithinthecommunity,yetmistakeswithinthe
experimentmakeitunreliableonceagain.Alltheparentshadchildrenwhoattendedpublic
schools,butafewofthequestionswerefocusedtowardscharterschools.Becausetherewas
littleornopersonalexperiencewithcharterschools,itispossiblemanyoftheanswerswere
basedonfalseinformation.Only1parenthadachildwhoattendedcharterschoolinthepast,
andshefavoredpublicschools.Moreparentswithchildrenwhoattendedbothcharterandpublic
schoolswouldhavepossiblycreatedmorevarietyinthedataandpossiblydifferentresults.
Basedonthisdata,itisevidentthatmostpeoplearesatisfiedwiththeeducationsystem
withinHilliardandpublicschoolsingeneralbutthinkcharterschoolsneedimprovement.Many
peoplelikethedirectionHilliardCitySchoolsisgoingin,andonlyafewhadobjections.For
charterschools,manyofthoseinterviewedandsurveyedbelievecharterschoolsneedtoimprove
theireducationqualityandreputation.However,sincethisinformationcomesfrommostly
peoplewithnopersonalexperiencewithcharterschools,thisdataisnotreliableenoughto
implementchanges.Futureresearchersonthistopicshouldobtainequalamountsofdatafrom
thosewhohaveexperiencewithcharterschools,experiencewithpublicschools,andexperience
withboth.Sincethemajorerrorwithinmydatawasanoverwhelmingamountofparticipants
withonlypublicschoolexperience,avoidingthismistakeinfuturestudieswillproducevalid
resultsandastrongerbasisforimprovement.
Overall,mydatadidsupportmythesis.However,thereislowinternalvaliditydueto
manyproblemswithinmymethodandtheparticipantsselected.Themainproblemwasthelack
ofparticipantswithcharterschoolexperience,whichunintentionallyresultedinabiastowards
publicschools.Withthisdata,itcanbeconcludedthatmajorityofpeoplearesatisfiedwiththe

educationinHilliardCitySchools.Althoughmanysaidthatcharterschoolsneededtoimprove,
thebiasedresultsarenotreliableasabasisforimprovement.Tomakesuretheresultsare
reliableinfuturestudies,participantsshouldcomefromdifferentschoolbackgrounds,withequal
amountsfromcharterandpublicschools.
