Learning Standard(s)/Outcome(s):
In this lesson students will explore the bible story in Luke 1:26-38. We will be looking at angels, Mary
and Nazareth.

Assessment:
Before:
The students will be exposed to the story of Mary talking with the Angel, and will be asked about what
they heard. The students will show me what they believe angels look like.
During:
The students will demonstrate their ideas of angels, Nazareth and Mary.
After:
Through group discussion, and sharing of their ideas to the whole class, each student is aware of how
many different definitions and images that can occur through the one term.

Teaching focus:
Teaching skills that the pre-service teacher would like to personally develop:

Have the students see me as a teacher

Work on my confidence and organisation
Be able to clearly articulate each instruction

Background to the learning:

A.

References for teacher background knowledge

Gospel
Images of angels, Mary and Nazareth
B.

Identify students current knowledge

I will be using a group discussion and exploration of ideas to determine what students already know
about the angels, Mary the mother of Jesus, and Nazareth.

Lesson content:
A.

Introduction

10 mins

I will have prayer, the Maranatha song, and then begin my lesson. I will begin by asking
students what they think of when I say angels Mary and Nazareth. I will ask each student
to participate. I will read the Gospel reading in Luke, and then re-visit the word association.

B.

Development

20-25 mins

I will then have the student comes to the sand pit and show me what they think an angel looks
like, and what they think Nazareth might have looked like when Jesus was born. The
exploration in different textures, makes drawing images different.

C.

Consolidation, practice, extension

5 mins

The students will be consolidating their learning through the revisiting of the word association.

D.

Closure

5-8 mins

I will show the power point presentation that has several different images of each term. We
will revisit the text as well and see if the students can make more sense about it.

Post-lesson review and evaluation:

Student achievement:
The students will extend on their understanding of the period of time that Jesus was born in,
what Mary looked like, and how angels are depicted in art.
Teaching effectiveness:
I will have learnt which students work faster than the others, and make sure I have an
extension activity. I will be attempting to tie up lessons neatly, as that is one of my areas to work on.
