Question 1. Oxygen (A) is diffusing through carbon monoxide (B) under steady-state conditions,
with carbon monoxide stationary. The total pressure is 1 10 , and the temperature is 0C.
The partial pressure of oxygen at two planes 2.0 mm apart is 13000 and 6500 , respectively.
The diffusivity for the mixture is 1.87 10 . Calculate the rate of diffusion of oxygen in
through each square meter of two planes.

Question 2. A mixture of He and N2 gas is contained in a pipe at 298 K and 1 atm total pressure
which is constant throughout. At one end of the pipe at point 1, the partial pressure pA1 of He is
0.60 atm and at the other end at 0.2 m (20 cm), pA2 = 0.20 atm. Calculate the flux of He at steady
state if DAB of the He-N2 mixture is 0.687 10 0.687 . Use SI and cgs units.

Question 3. A tank containing 15 mole percent of CO2 in air is connected to a second tank
containing only air. The connection line is 5 cm in diameter and 30 cm long, as shown in figure
below. Both tanks are at 1 atm pressure and at 298.15 K. The volume of each tank is very large
compared to the volume of gas in the 30-cm connection line, so that concentration changes in each
tank are negligible for a very long time after the beginning of the experiment. The diffusion
coefficient of CO2 in air at 1 atm and 25C is 0.164 10 . Calculate the initial rate of
mass transfer of the CO2. Is the air transferred?
