Chapter 6 REVIEW Newtons Third Law

Period: _________
Conceptual Physics

1. State Newtons Third Law use the definition found in your text.
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

2. What is a force? What are the units of force?

A force is pressure put on another object. NEWTONs are the units of force.

3. How many forces are involved in an interaction? What do we call these forces? How are they
defined?
2 forces are involved, we call them reaction forces

4. Forces in a Newtons Third Law interaction occur in what kind of time frame relative to one
another?
They happen at the same time

5. How are forces involved between interacting objects of different masses related?
No matter the mass, all actions and reactions give an equal and opposite force

6. How is the acceleration (due to the Newtons Third Law forces) between interacting objects
of different masses related?
They vary with the mass of the object. Bigger mass=smaller acceleration

7. What is lift? How does the concept of lift relate to Newtons Third Law?
Lift is an upward force that counteracts gravity. It will not give an equal/opposite force.

8. Explain why action and reaction forces do not cancel.
force than the other

Because one may have a greater

9. Explain why even the heavyweight champion of the world cannot hit a piece of paper held in
midair with a force of 200N.
Because the paper is so light and flimsy that the paper would fly up

Calculate the following. Always use units in your answers!!

10. In a track meet, an athlete pushes up off the ground with a force of 450N. What force pushed
the earth downward?
His foot pushing downward of 450 newtons

11. A 70kg hockey player pushes off the boards with a force of 50N. What force is exerted on the
hockey player? What is the hockey players acceleration (assume no friction)?
Force= 50 N
Acceleration= 1.4 kg

12. A 500kg bolder drops from a 100m cliff and heads for the ground below. Assume g = 9.8 m/s2
as you answer the following:
a. Calculate the force of the earth pulling on the bolder.
4,900 N
b. Calculate the force of the bolder pulling on the earth.
4,900N
=
c. Calculate the acceleration of the earth due to this force. Assume the mass of the earth
is 5.98x1024 kg.

8.19(10 ^-22) m/s^2

13. Two people standing on skates push off against one another. Describe this situation in terms
of Newtons Third Law. They would both go in opposite directions because every object has
an opposite and equal reaction.
14. If the two skaters push off with a force of 45N, skater A has a mass of 35kg, and skater B has a
mass of 70kg, what is the acceleration of each skater? If they each glide for 1 second, how
much distance will each travel as a result of this force? (recall: d = at2)
A= 1.29 m/s^2.
B= 0.64 m/s^2
D1= 0.645
D2= .32

For the following figures, identify the action and reaction force pair(s). Indicate the forces with
