Uses of Static Electricity
5-9
SC.912.P.10.13 - Relate the configuration of static
charges to the electric field, electric force, electric
potential, and electric potential energy.
SC.912.L.17.16 - Discuss the large-scale
environmental impacts resulting from human activity,
including waste spills, oil spills, runoff, greenhouse
gases, ozone depletion, and surface and groundwater
pollution.
I would use this site as an enrichment resource. The
animation showing how pollutants are extracted from
industrial exhaust is a good visual of the process. Its
simple and color-coded even if it is oversimplified. This
could also be used as a starting point for students who are
interested in the details/specifics of the process and how
different industries use this static electricity in this way.
The other two uses of static electricity (paint spraying and
photocopying) are also interesting.
The explanations are very simple and the visuals are very
clear. The basics of the process are spelled out and the
science behind the processes is explained very simply,
opposite charges attract while the same charges repel.

How Batteries Work
5-9
SC.5.P.10.1 - Investigate and describe some basic
forms of energy, including light, heat, sound,
electrical, chemical, and mechanical.
SC.7.P.11.3 - Cite evidence to explain that energy
cannot be created nor destroyed, only changed from
one form to another.
This would be a good site to explore after students play
with some dry cell batteries for a while and get a sense of
what conditions need to be met for them to work. The site
offers illustrations about the different parts of a battery,
how batteries are made, and how they power devices. The
illustrations and explanations are simple enough for

beginners and can lead students to more advanced topics.

Students could also use this site to generate additional
questions about how different types of batteries work.
There is another page related to this site that describes the
history of batteries with an emphasis on Energizer
developments.
The final series on the site about how batteries power
devices was especially helpful. And seeing how batteries
are constructed can lead to questions about why batteries
have to be constructed to separate the cathode and anode.
The diagrams throughout very simple and easy to
understand.

Static Electricity
5-7
SC.912.P.10.13 - Relate the configuration of static charges
to the electric field, electric force, electric potential, and
electric potential energy.
I would use this site after an introduction to static electricity.
The explanation is clear and there are diagrams that show
which charges are on which surface. There are even
clickable buttons that provide additional explanations.
The diagrams and clickable buttons with additional
information really make the concept crystal clear.

Current Electricity (Circuits)
5-9
SC.912.P.10.13 - Relate the configuration of static charges
to the electric field, electric force, electric potential, and
electric potential energy.
The site could be a good for concept development or
review. I would share this with students after completing
exploratory activities with students and they have a basic
idea of how batteries and circuits work.
Along with the video, this site offers activities that could
be used to reinforce concepts in the minds of the students.
There are graphic organizers and quizzes that students can
complete to test their understanding.
