Murder in Marsh

By Jessica Howard

A Bacchus Marsh man has been fatally shot in the

driveway of his Labilliere Street home, in broad
daylight.
Emergency services were called to the property just
before 8:20am on Tuesday (May 24) after the victim,
who was sitting in his vehicle, sustained a gunshot
wound to the head.
The man, identified by police as 48-year-old Paul
Hogan, died at the scene.
His alleged girlfriend, 26-year-old Yu Tung Lo, was
arrested by Homicide Squad detectives on Wednesday
night alongside a 33-year-old Thornbury resident
Daniel Duhovic.

EUREKA
Garages & Sheds

It is also alleged Duhovic shot the victim at pointblank range at the request of Yu Lo. The pair appeared
in Melbourne Magistrates court on Thursday, each
charged with one count of murder.
A Maddingley resident who ran past the Labilliere
Street property just moments before the incident,
said he saw a female of Asian appearance and a man
standing outside the house at around 8am.
I was jogging past and I saw an Asian lady standing
outside with another guy, I think he might have been
[the victims] flat mate, not the shooter. They had a
whole heap of boxes and bags, I thought she might have
been going overseas or something.
The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said
the two were standing and talking quietly.

They werent arguing. When I later heard there had

been a shooting on that street, I remembered that I had
seen them standing outside the house.
The area was cordoned off for over eight hours.
In the days following Mr Hogans death, tributes
flowed into Bacchus Marsh Noodle Lovers, where he
was employed as a delivery driver.
Members of the community also took to social media
to pay their respects.
What a tragic and sad case of affairs. No one wins
here; a family have lost a dad and another family will
be grieving over the choice their loved one made.
Breaks my heart, a post read.
Daniel Duhovic and Yu Tung Lo will reappear in court
on October 20.

Empowering people

By Jessica Howard
The regions disabled community now
have more opportunities to join the
workforce.
Mambourin,
a
non-government
community service organisation, has
opened up in Bacchus Marshs main
street and is offering adults with
intellectual disabilities the chance to
learn new vocational and life skills.
General Manager, Michael Homann
said the organisation was about
supporting people to live a life as
independent and inclusive as possible.
We do this by providing educational,
recreational and vocational life skill
programs to state-funded participants,
he said.
We also offer supported employment
work at our factories in Melton and
Derrimut, which allows those who are

capable of, or have the desire to work to

take part in packaging and distribution
tasks.
Mambourin has centres right across
the western suburbs of Melbourne,
including Werribee, Altona, Sunshine,
Deer Park, Braybrook and Melton.
Mr Homann said the new Bacchus
Marsh centre was absolutely fantastic
in terms of its accessibility.
We try to get our participants out into
the community as much as possible
and one of the benefits of this site is
we dont have to jump on a bus to go
anywhere. It is a great location; we have
the library down the road, a shopping
centre out the back and a park directly
across the road, he said.
So far we have had around 30
participants in this centre. We tend to
cross-pollinate across multiple sites to

maximise socialisation opportunities.

That way the participants here can
make friends with people from other
sites.
Mr Homann said the Mambourin
factories, which employed around 60
people with disabilities, provided a real
sense of independence.
Some people can only work for a
couple of hours a day, but they really do
enjoy that and getting their own money
is really satisfying.
We have had people from other sites
who have actually gone on to work part
time in Bunnings and the Werribee
Racecourse, so they have left us to go on
to work on award wages. Unfortunately
there arent a lot of those opportunities,
but those sort of successes are what we
really strive for.

Fiskville findings announced

By Jessica Howard
The final report of the Parliamentary Inquiry into Fiskville
has revealed contamination at
the CFA training college is likely to have caused cancer.
The comprehensive report
includes 125 findings and 31
recommendations.
The inquiry studied the sites
effects on employees health,
residents and visitors during
that time, and the roles and
responsibilities of past and present executive management.
The findings in the report justified the Governments decision
to close Fiskville on advice from
the CFA Board, which stated
that the site posed a health and
safety risk to firefighters.
Member for Western Victoria
Simon Ramsay said the report
showed a breakdown in good
governance of the CFA board,
and a lazy attitude to documentation for chemical use and
storage on-site and occupational
health and safety good practice.
The committee was thorough
and meticulous in requesting
documents, researching history,
trawling through CFA board
minutes, accepting 450 submissions, holding 30 public hearings and calling 100 witnesses,
he said.
While firefighter safety during

training was always paramount,

the reality was that, in practise,
it was left wanting in some
circumstances.
Ballan Fire Brigade Lieutenant
Ian Ireland said the final report
was, from a community perspective, disappointing.
We are unhappy with the attitude that was taken when the
site was referred to as a toxic
dump. Something like that has
a reflection on our whole community and why would people
buy in or visit a toxic area. I
question what will happen to
our community from an economic point of view.
As part of the Victorian Budget
2016-17, the government announced a $4.62 million investment to establish a new fire
fighting training centre in the
Central Highlands and upgrade
the training facility at Huntly.
However, Mr Ireland said the
prospects of a new facility were
all talk.
No Fiskville means no training ground. If we do want to
train, weve been told we can go
to Horsham or Huntly, but can
you imagine that? A group, who
used to have a couple of training
nights a year out at Fiskville, decide to go one Sunday to Huntly.
We each take our trucks and
what is left to protect our community? Nothing. Its detrimen-

tal to our entire region.

In a minority report, Mr Ramsay and assembly members Bill
Tilley and Tim McCurdy said
they werent convinced that the
evidence provided to the committee would necessitate a permanent closure of the Fiskville
Facility.
We as a committee are aware
of the long history of connections to the CFA training facility, and the many thousands of
firefighters who have trained
at Fiskville and have a strong
attachment to the facility, none
more so than Ballan CFA lieutenant Ian Ireland, Mr Ramsay
said.
As a CFA volunteer who
trained at Fiskville and has the
facility in my electorate, I wanted to seek the truth and provide
those families and volunteers
connected to Fiskville with answers about what went on in
relation to the work and safety
practices at the site that led to
the CFA board recommending
that the government close the
facility.
The Andrews Labor Government viewed the report
on Tuesday May 24, and will
now consider the content before forming a response to the
recommendations.

Letters to the Editor

Email: news@themooraboolnews.com.au

Dear Editor,
This is an expression of
thanks to those people and
organisations having the
common sense to make the
Avenue of Honour (Bacchus
Marsh) a uniform 60kph,
instead of having a previous
ridiculous short stretch of
70kph.
Even top officials are being
caught out and being fined,
with these ever changing
short distances of speed
signs.
Drivers have enough to
concentrate on, to drive
cautiously, without being
distracted by ever changing
speed signs.
Some suggestions:
I would like to see speed
signs, in general, painted on
the road surface, especially
in suburbia.
All school zones should be
designated by flashing speed
signs for one hour only of
a morning and afternoon.
Timetables need changing
to oblige. No school speed
signs should exist outside
those two hours each day.
Teachers were once rostered
for school crossing duty, for
15 minutes morning and
afternoons to supervise children. An individual teacher
was on duty once a week or
less in most schools. Why is
so much time necessary now
for school crossings?
I suppose that these ideas

will cop a lot of comment,

but something needs to
be done about more and
more unnecessary speed
restrictions.
They are causing unsafe
situations and are not
improvements.

Dear Editor,
We in the Moorabool and
surrounding shire west
of Melbourne are ideally
placed to provide unique
tourism alternatives for the
close by city population.
Our district, famous for
everything that surrounds
it, (Sovereign Hill, Daylesford, Macedon, Bellarine
and the Surf Coast) suffers
from a lack of iconic local
drawcards.
The term iconic is the key,
not a me too fabrication but
a movement in the district
that should celebrate our
indigenous and rural heritage. A chance to experience
an element of remoteness so
close to the city and so well
serviced by transport.
I believe that a number of
small scale Lodge/Retreat,
ventures will provide the
environment to make our
district somewhere to stop,
reconnect and stay rather
than just pass through on
the way to somewhere else,
as in the present case.

To be iconic we need to
preserve the cultural and
scenic features of the area. I
am speaking about the beauty of the rolling hills and
impressive river gorges that
will be lost if massive wind
farm ventures be allowed
to proceed in their present
form in the Moorabool Valley and Lal Lal districts.
Opportunities for development and employment will
evaporate and any chance of
a viable local tourist industry will not eventuate. The
Entrepreneurs will not come
and those amongst us will
never know.
Our family is so passionate
about the iconic retreat concept that we are presently
developing a retreat type
project on a 20 acre property
at Bungal on the Moorabool
River adjacent to the Bungal
State Forest. This is intended
to be a place where small
groups or families can gather to reconnect with nature
and each other. The location
will be private but not isolated, however it will be severely compromised should
the wind farms be allowed
to proceed in their present
form and locations.
As a long-term participant
and entrepreneur in the
transport and tourism industries, I have tremendous
optimism for the district.
But this optimism will come
to nothing, including the

Dear Editor,
Regulated market not the
answer to dairy crisis.
Dairy processor Murray
Goulburn has been caught
up in a global slump in
dairy products, and now
shareholders and shareholder suppliers are facing
the consequences. Not only
are farmers seeing the share
value slump from $2.65 to
85
cents but the supplier
shareholder must now sit
back and watch the milk solid price plummet from $5.60
to less than $5.
The ripple effect of this
news has been a disaster
for the industry and has led
many to question whether
the boards strategy of partly
floating the company last
July was a wise decision,
given it is now beholden to
public shareholders. Perhaps a company that relies
on 94per cent of its product
to be sold in a global market

was simply caught up in economic conditions outside its

control.
It is likely that each of these
issues was a contributing
factor, but it was no doubt an
aggressive strategy for CEO
Gary Helou to transition the
company into a high-value
product directed to the Chinese market. It was suddenly
caught in an oversupply as
Europe removed tariffs; Russia imposed quotas and Chinese demand slowed down
considerably. Throw in a
high Aussie dollar and you
have a recipe for a significant
correction in the global price
of milk solids.
There are questions that
need to be answered by the
board and the CEO before
he rides off into the distance
with a $10
million gold
watch. Why was the price
projection at $6 a kilogram
when global conditions were
known to the company many
months ago? Why was there
a bullish profit forecast for
the company when market
conditions were contracting?
Now the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the Australian
Competition and Consumer
Commission (ACCC) are
investigating Murray Goulburns board governance
and performance, while unit
holders are seeking class
actions.
As part of the ACCC inves-

tigations, greater scrutiny of

the current pricing contracts
that Murray Goulburn and
Fonterra apply to their suppliers that involve retrospective claw-back provisions
need to take place to determine if they contravene Australian Competition Law.
It is no help when opportunistic groups like Farmer
Power are calling for a regulated market and a price
support system when most
of the product is exported to
a free market. Dairy farmers
should be directing their anger to the behaviour of Murray Goulburn and Fonterra
to their suppliers, and not
the market.
The wool industrys attempt to do so was a disaster. Governments should not
interfere with a free market,
but they have a social responsibility to support the
health and wellbeing of our
communities, and our dairy
sectoris a crucial part of our
community.
It is pleasing to see both
Federal and the State Government responding to the
immediate needs of the
dairy Industry but a longerterm plan needs to be initiated by the Industry itself
to preserve the viability of
dairy farming in Australia
for the future.

Community drives recovery

By Jessica Howard
A calendar of events will
see the Scotsburn community enjoy a further six months
of recovery activities.
A dinner at Narmbool, a
day out in Melbourne and a
drive in movie are just some
of the activities on the agenda, alongside a Christmas in
July bonfire and the highly
successful dinners held at
the Scotsburn Community
Hall on a monthly basis.
An art project will also
commemorate the Scotsburn
fire and community recovery; with two key stages of

works by local artists and

community members including charcoal works and
pastels.
Funded by a $65,000 grant
from the State Government,
the activities are being coordinated by the Scotsburn
Recovery Committee working groups, and Moorabool
and Ballarat Shire Councils.
Moorabool Shire Councillor
Tom Sullivan said the process had been driven by the
Scotsburn community.
It has been great to see the
breadth of ideas that they
have developed, he said.

These events and activities are important, as they

provide opportunities for
the community to continue
to work together in recovery,
and they show this community that they have not been
forgotten by the broader
community.
Mr Sullivan said the challenge in the aftermath of
large-scale events was to
ensure that the community
was supported for as long as
they require it.
Long after the weather has
cooled and the regrowth has
started, he said.

Decorating the house

By Jessica Howard

Small pieces of colourful

tiles have made a huge difference to Darley Neighbourhood House.
Mosaic works have been
erected outside the centre,
including a large sign at the
front entrance and three
houses on the adjacent panel.
Constructed by volunteers
and funded by a Moorabool
Shire Council arts grant, the
mosaics took around five
months to complete.
Chris, project mentor and
volunteer, said around ten
people were involved in the
project, with classes occurring on a regular basis.
Everyone pitched in. The
mosaic classes actually
started around four years
ago and they were only supposed to run for a period of
four weeks, but everyone
just absolutely loved them,
she said.
After we received the grant
from Council we began the
project in January of this
year. The other mosaic statues you can see throughout
the garden were also part
of the project, but they were
funded solely by us.
Darley
Neighbourhood
House Chairperson, Debra Doyle said the mosaics
were amazing works of art
and something everyone at
the House could feel really
proud of.
The official celebration

Moorabool Shire Council Arts Grant. Photos Helen Tatchell
of the project occurred on
May 12 in conjunction with
The Darley Neighbourhood
Houses Biggest Morning
Tea and National Volunteers
Week.
The morning tea event
raised over $460 for the Can-

cer Council and helped recognise the significant contribution made to the general
community by volunteers.
We could never hope to
pay our volunteers for the
work they do for us, Ms
Doyle said.

Court in action

By Steven Barnes (Work

Exp 3rd Yr Monash Uni)

The dangers of drinking

and driving were highlighted in the Bacchus Marsh
Magistrates
Court
last
Friday.
Linda White pleaded guilty
to two charges relating to
events on the 1st of January
this year.
Ms White had been travelling along Grant Street in
Bacchus Marsh before losing
control of her vehicle and
crashing into street lights at
3am.
It was alleged that Ms
White had consumed two
bottles of champagne and
an estimated six beers before
getting into her car.
Magistrate John Bentley
was shocked after it was
revealed to the court that
Linda White had only just
obtained her L-plates, and at
the time had no supervising
driver with her.
It is unbelievable she didnt
kill anyone or herself.
Millions is spent on awareness. Dont you see the
adverts on TV? Magistrate
Bentley said with a sense
of disbelief of what had
happened.
Other factors in the case
that were brought before
the court included that Ms
White had a 10 year old child

present in the car, and that

the damage caused was in
excess of $85,000, although
the Magistrate dismissed
her paying this.
In his sentencing the Magistrate remarked, I understand you just passed your
Learners test, and got into
a car without any help; its
unbelievable.
Ms White was fined $1200
with conviction and lost her
license for two years.

The dangers of having a dog

off a leash and unattended
were highlighted in the
Bacchus Marsh Magistrates
Court this week.
On March 15, 2015 at 5pm
it was alleged a brown pit
bull type dog with no collar
approached another dog in
Darley and attacked it, with
bites to both the neck and
legs.
The helpless dogs owner
came under attack and was
also injured, with the brown
pit bull biting him on the
arm.
Police were called to the
scene as it was alleged the
aggressive dog jumped into
a nearby maroon sedan. Police located the car with the
dogs owner Luke Calloway
inside.
Police searched Mr. Calloways car and found what

appeared to be a knife as
well as an iron bar; both considered weapons and dangerous items.
In his defence the accused
claimed that he did have the
dog on a chain but had fallen
asleep and the dog must
have escaped. Mr. Calloway
told the court the dog was in
fact a bullmastiff and he was
homeless at the time.
In his sentencing Magistrate Gregory Robinson took
into consideration the dogs
owner did not intentionally
cause this incident; his dog
being put down was punishment enough and was put on
a six month good behaviour
bond.
The knife and the iron bar
was ordered to be seized and
a $300 fine was imposed.

Craig Baajtes pleaded guilty

to speeding with the court
hearing he was travelling at
116kph in a 100kph zone.
Mr Baajtes said he was here
to find some justice. The
fine was waived due to his
good history but he still received a three-demerit point
penalty.
Magistrate Robinson told
the accused, You can walk
out of here with a small
victory.

Upgrade for deadly road

The Moorabool News 31 May, 2016 Page 9

Moorabool Shire Council

By Jessica Howard

NOTICE OF ORDINARY MEETING OF COUNCIL

The next Ordinary Meeting of Council will be held tomorrow 1 June, 2016 at the
Bungaree Community Centre, Bungaree-Creswick, Rd, Bungaree, commencing at
5.00pm.
Members of the public are most welcome to attend.
COMMITTEE MEETINGS

The next committee meeting will be of the Development Assessment Committee,

on Wednesday 8 June, 2016 in the Council Chambers, 15 Stead St, Ballan,
commencing at 4.00pm.
Members of the public are most welcome to attend.
Flexible barriers will be put in place on a section of the
notorious Bacchus Marsh-Geelong Road.
with their safety just by using the road.
Upgrades to the deadly
stretch of road will see flexible centre-line barriers and
rumble strips. Curve treatments like advance warning
signs and reflective guide
posts will also be installed
to ensure it is safer and easier for people to navigate on
windy roads.
Minister for Roads and
Road Safety Luke Donnellan said the safety improvements would deliver significant benefits to country

roads.
The increasing number
of fatalities on our roads is
alarming. Reducing the toll
to below 200 within five
years is the most ambitious
road safety target in Victorias history.
Nearly half of all road
deaths and a quarter of all
serious injuries happen on
roads posted at 100 and
110km/hr. The installation
of flexible barriers will help
to reduce run-off road and
head-on crashed by up to 85
per cent.

THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY DONT WASTE IT!

Grampians Central West Waste and Resource Recovery Group is in the process
of developing the regional waste and resource recovery implementation plan in
consultation with local and state government, industry, and nowwith you.
Our regional implementation plan aims to map out what we need to do over the
next 10 years in order to better manage our regions waste and maximise resource
recovery. This is your opportunity to have a say about waste and resource recovery,
issues, needs and priorities.
Community consultation will be held over the next couple of months. Community
forums and feedback opportunities will be listed on GCWWRRGs website:

AVENUE OF HONOUR TREE WORKS

Moorabool Shire Council will be undertaking aerial inspections and tree pruning
works in the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour from Monday 6th of June 2016 to
Tuesday 14th of June 2016.
These important tree works will be undertaken as part of the ongoing commitment
to the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour Strategic Management Plan.
Council is periodically undertaking these works to limit the risk to public safety and
extend the life of the trees within the Avenue of Honour.
Works on the trees will be conducted Monday to Friday only during the hours of
8.00am and 5.00pm.
Trafc and other disruptions will be kept to a minimum.

One of Moorabools deadliest roads is set to receive

upgrades following seven
deaths in just five years.
The State Government this
month announced the states
road safety strategy and
action plan, Towards Zero
2016-2020, which includes
$340 million to reduce the
road toll and upgrade more
than 2,500 kilometres of rural and regional roads.
The
Geelong-Bacchus
Marsh Road, which is used
as a direct north-south link
between Geelong, Bacchus
Marsh and Melton, has been
a death trap for drivers, particularly on the 12-kilometre
section between Little River
Ripley Road and Ballan
Road.
Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay told the
State Government earlier
this month that he had travelled on the road, which he
described as terrible with
many corners and bends,
many times.
Fifty drivers have been
injured and there have been
88 collisions most of which
appear to have been caused
by drivers crossing the centre line, he said.
Given the statistics, many
commuters are gambling

Moorabool Shire Council, supported by Mesh consultants has prepared a draft

Housing Strategy for Bacchus Marsh and surrounds. The Housing Strategy will
guide future housing density, identify areas for inll and new housing areas and will
assist with the protection of the character of the Bacchus Marsh area. Given the
expected growth pressures to be faced by Bacchus Marsh in the coming decades a
housing strategy is fundamental to managing change.

Help find Keith

An information caravan
was set up in Bacchus Marsh
last week as the investigation into the disappearance
of 47-year-old Keith Foggin
continues.
The Toolleen man was reported missing on October
1 after his daughter had not
heard from him in more
than a week.

Mr Foggin was known to

maintain regular phone calls
with his daughter and two
grandchildren, who reside
in Queensland, however no
contact had been made since
around 8am on September
24.

He was expected to travel

from Victoria to Queensland. Detectives have established he was last seen at
around 10:30am on Thursday September 24 at a mechanics workshop in Millbank Street, Bacchus Marsh.

[We spoke on the phone]

all the time. I worked night
shift at the time so he would
call me at midnight. It was
always very regular, she
said.

I had contacted people

[when I hadnt heard from
him] because it was unusual.
Day three was a big trigger
and then five, and seven was
really worrying. Thats when
I was pretty sure that it was
something serious because
it was out of character for
him.

The information caravan

was set up on Grant Street,
Bacchus Marsh between
8:30am and 4pm on Thursday (May 26). In a press
conference held at the site,
Mr Foggins daughter Cassie
pleaded for the communitys
help.
He was a very family oriented man, its definitely
been hard.

forward. Any information
helps.

A mannequin wearing similar clothing to that worn by

Mr Foggin when he was last
seen was displayed for the
public. It is believed he was
last seen wearing grey/black
Hurley tracksuit pants, a
black Jim Beam Blokes
Dilemma t-shirt and a light
grey hooded zip-up jacket

Foggin had dealings in Bacchus Marsh that Victoria Police were aware of.

Mr Foggin is described as
Caucasian, 170cm tall, medium build with short dark
hair, a grey beard and hazel
eyes.

Older residents facing a lack of suitable affordable housing stock in Moorabool

Home at Last is a State Government funded program targeted at early intervention
and pre-crisis response to older people experiencing housing instability, particularly
those living in insecure and unaffordable private rental homes.
Older people have a right to a decent home in their retirement years but
increasing numbers of older people are struggling to survive, says Jeff Feidler,
Manager of the Housing for the Aged Action Group.
General issues for this at-risk group include market forces, illness or age
related disability, low income / pensioner status, low levels of life-savings like
superannuation, loss of a loved one, or family breakdown forcing a person to
cope with rent on one income.
Rates of home ownership across the nation are declining and Australia has an
ageing population. Older women (in particular) are more likely to experience
homelessness and their rates of homelessness are growing.
A lack of investment in public housing by successive governments over
decades has meant that many are forced to rent in the unregulated private
market. Added to this is the difculty for residents of Moorabool Shire to access
appropriate sized housing.
We need smaller units (with appropriate accessibility) to enable people to age
in place, advises Mr Feidler.
The 2011 Australian Bureaus of Statistics data shows that there were more than
300 people aged 60 or older in Moorabool Shire renting in unsecure private rental
accommodation. This represents an 86% increase over the ve year period from 2006.
In the last nancial year 27 people (aged 55-65) and 21 people (aged 66-85)
contacted our local Homelessness Access Point for assistance, says Toni Gillett,
Housing Services Coordinator at Child & Family Services Ballarat.
In short 48 older people required assistance with crisis accommodation, support,
tenancy issues and information around housing options.
In order to address some of these issues, an alliance of key agencies has formed.
The alliance consists of Home at Last program, Moorabool Shire Council, Aged
Care Assessment Services, Djerriwarrh Health Services, Council of the Ageing,
Wintringham, Child and Family Services (CAFS), Department of Health and
Human Services and Grampians Homelessness Network.
Moorabool residents are encouraged to come along to an upcoming afternoon
tea information session on Monday 30 May, 2016.

Banks hurt by investment in coal

One of the leaders of the

These protests around the

place amid new evidence of
the rapid transformation of
the worlds climate due to
human activity. April 2016
was the warmest April on
record, according to NASA,
beating the previous record
by a huge margin? Global
temperature records have
now been broken for seven

months in a row, with last

year the warmest on record,
beating a mark only set in
2014.
Scientists have expressed
surprise that the 400ppm
milestone has been reached
so soon, warning that a large
amount of warming has
already been locked in, regardless of future emissions
cuts.
Meanwhile our federal
election rolls on with little
attention, especially by the
government, given to this
looming crisis. The Labor
party has included climate
change in their policies but
they still support coal mining and selling. However,
there are signs that although
the government is doing its
best to encourage fossil fuels in each and every way,
things are not so rosy for the
banks.
It seems the investments by

WHATS ON

arthur coal in October 2011.

Since then, the debt has been
downgraded by both major
ratings agencies Moodys
and Standard & Poors to
very high and substantial
risk ratings respectively. Although Peabodys Australian operations are supposedly continuing unchanged,
their
opaque
corporate
structure means its difficult
to tell what effect a restructure brought on by Chapter
11 proceedings will have.
Westpac, ANZ and NAB
are also reported to have
loaned $25m each to Peabodys head operations in
North America, and major
question marks now hang
over just how much of that
debt will be recoverable. According to the AFR, ANZ is
believed to have written off
its exposure to Peabodys
North American headstock,
while Westpac has on-sold

its debt.
Then there is the Adani Abbot Point Coal Port. Adanis
Abbot Point terminal was hit
with a credit rating downgrade in March, now sitting
just one notch above junk
status. Despite destructive
plans to expand the port to
accommodate coal from the
Galilee Basin, current forecasts for coal demand would
actually see a decrease in the
volume going through Abbot Point. It might be worth
asking your bank if it invested in the Adani Abbot Point
Coal Port!
Now to continue the checklist for the upcoming election as promised. Again you
are free to forward these
questions to your sitting
members and candidates or
simply ask them when they
next visit your town.
Question to candidate:
What do you think of the fol-

lowing comments on climate

change from these members
of Australias government, at
least in power until July 2?
Liberal Senator Zed Seselja
said shutting down the coal
industry would send us
back to the caves. Liberal
member Craig Kelly said he
fears for the refugees caused
by wind turbines and Eric
Abetz dismissed climate
concern as Chicken-Littletype hysteria. It is also
worth noting that another
MP, George Christensen,
called green activists terrorists and described climate change as good science fiction. Do you side
with these members of the
government?
What is your opinion?

the big banks in coal and co is

already hurting them where
it hurts! For the following information I am indebted to
Market Forces. The following are two examples. On 13
April, Peabody Energy filed
for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
protection under US law, unable to service its $8b of debt.
Peabody was the worlds biggest privately-owned coal
producer. Throughout 2015,
Peabody suffered an annual
loss of over $2.5b and saw its
share price plummet some
97%. Before its bankruptcy
announcement, the companys corporate debt was
trading in some instances
of less than 1% of what it
was issued at. Australias
big banks may be caught
up in Peabodys demise,
with CommBank, NAB and
Westpac each having contributed to $49m to facilitate
Peabodys purchase of Mac-

REAL ESTATE

Victoria looks its best in autumn. The trees are golden,

winters bare branches have
yet to appear and mild and
sunny days give way to
crisp mornings. However,
some vendors planning to
sell their home can be wary
of doing so now, assuming
that the cooler weather may
affect their efforts to market
and sell a property.
While spring, with gardens
in flower, has much to offer
there are also many more
homes on the market at that
time. And thats where autumn comes into its own,
with agents reporting a
shortage of stock to show
buyers in many areas.
For those who are putting
their home on the market, its
important to take advantage
of all that the season has to
offer changing colours in
the garden, floral fragrances
to greet buyers both inside
and outside your home, and
plants neatly pruned without the fear of damage from
an unexpectedly hot day.
Bring the warmth of an
autumn colour scheme inside your home, with flower
and leaf arrangements and
throws and cushions reflecting your garden colours,
giving your home a cosy
and welcoming feel. In the
kitchen too, a display on a
table or benchtop can reflect
these colours and the bounty
of the season colourful seasonal fruit, for example.

But dont get carried away

its about creating a feeling, not overwhelming the
potential buyer with too
many flowers, candles and
competing fragrances.
For evening inspections
light a fire if you have one,
but make sure the chimney
is swept to avoid that smoky
smell. Ensure the heating has warmed the house
before buyers arrive and
dust that gathered in vents
over summer is removed
well before using the heating during the sale period.
Have the heating higher
than usual remember that
during an inspection the
doors will be open chilling
your home and you dont
want the heating constantly
turning on and off. And for
late inspections, turn on the
lamps and draw the curtains
so that your home is a welcoming haven.
During daytime inspections, particularly late afternoon, maximise light by
pushing curtains right back
and putting blinds to the top
so every scrap of sunlight
enters. Turn on every light
and lamp some experts
even suggest placing spotlights on the floor behind
furniture.
Maximise available sunlight by ensuring shrubs and
trees are not blocking light
from windows. Keep lawns
mowed, edges trimmed,
garden beds weeded, paths
clear and rake up every last
leaf you dont want buyers
thinking this property will
be too much work.
If it is raining, or rain
threatens, have a container
for umbrellas prominently
positioned and mats outside
and inside the doors.
Above all else, talk through
home opens, and your marketing campaign, with your
agent to maximise results
this autumn.

21 Leonards Road East, Warrenheip

The property consists of one title and two crown allotments, and offers approx. 3257m2. You can easily create a
second title for the vacant block which would give you value adding options STCA for planning permit dwelling
permission. The cosy three bedroom brick veneer home has fabulous bones to add your own individuality. Set on
the Melbourne side of Ballarat and positioned just 1km to the Warrenheip Primary School, this property is just 100

Last weekend the G B Forestry Cobras travelled to Melton

and it was a very cold day for the Indigenous Round. It
was again a very successful day for the football teams but
mixed results in the netball. In the seniors, it was a tough
fought out contest with the Cobras getting off to a good start,
however Melton were able to peg back the lead and by half
time the Cobras found themselves down by 3 points. In the
third quarter the Cobras settled and held a 13 point lead
going into the last quarter, eventually running out victors by
24 points. The reserves also displayed a great team effort,
after a close first half the Cobras kicked away in the second
half with plenty of supply to the forwards where Castrignano
kicked 5 goals and new recruit Maksymow kicked 4,
eventually running out victors by 67 points. The U18s got
off to a slow start but by half time were well in control lead
strongly by their captain Joshua Calvitto with great support
from B. Griffiths, J. Johns, Z. Miesen, D. Bishop and J.
Dickson eventually running out victorious by 56 points.
In the Netball, again the girls came up against some pretty
tough opposition and unfortunately not all teams were
successful on the day. The A graders lost in a very tight
game by 4 goals, the B graders had a very strong win
running out victors by 22 goals, the C graders also had
a very good win running out victors by 12 goals, the D
graders were not so lucky and were well beaten on the day
by 28 goals and the 19 and Unders also lost their game by
39 goals.
In the Womens Football they had a very impressive win
after being well beaten for most of the match and only being
able to put 4 behinds on the board till three quarter time.
The girls decided to dig deep for the last quarter and ended
up kicking 5 goals to nil in the last 20 minutes to run out
victors by 16 points. A MASSIVE team effort.

Volunteer of the Week is

Joanne Coulton

Our special mention for this weeks Volunteer goes to

Joanne who has not only come on to the committee this
year but is also coordinating and running the kitchen for the
club and ensures that she also puts her hand up to help out
with anything else that needs to be done. This is her free
time each week that she is giving to the club and though
Joanne is quiet, her infectious smile welcomes and greets
people all the time. It cannot be underestimated the time
and effort our volunteers put in to keep our club running
and people like Joanne just make everyones jobs that little
bit easier to do. The Bacchus Marsh Football Netball club
would like to recognise your contribution by saying - THANK
YOU.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The Centre Cross Country meet was held at Myrniong Recreation
Reserve last Saturday, with the weather typical of what athletes are
used to for Cross Country. Cooler temperatures and drizzling rain
caused slippery conditions. Many close races where contested as
runners battled it out over a winding and undulating course.
This Saturdays meet will be held at one of the Centres new venues,
the Rupert Vance Moon Reserve. This venue is located at the east end
of the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour, just off the Western Highway
amongst the market gardens. The first race will start at 10.30am.

Tigers maul Blues

Round 7 v Springbank
Football
Seniors
The Blues resumed the season after a weeks break to
our first true wet weather
match of the year. The Seniors were right in the match
for the first two quarters with
Justin McConnell right up to
the job up forward. At the
main break the Blues were
down by just four points,
certainly within striking
range . Then in the third
quarter it looked like the
Blues were in the mix with
Justin McConnell marking
up forward and it looked
like the gap was about to
be bridged. But that was
not to be and the Tigers, in
a dominant display, kicked
four unanswered goals in
succession and changed the
tenor of the match. In the
final quarter the Blues went
goal for goal but the damage
had been done by the Tigers
in the third quarter, sealing
the result.
Final Scores - Ballan 10 5
65 lost Springbank 16 8

Best - J. McNamara, J.
Wilkinson, D. Tanti, L. Souter, D. Nielsen, A.Speak
The Reserves were very
undermanned and started

slowly and did not score

until late in the second quarter. Jack Shaw as ever was
a consistent winner in his
position and never gave up.
Trent Laurie also adapted
to conditions well and had
plenty of the action along
with Mason Currie in the
middle. The Blues defence
battled stoically all day and
that pressure led their opponents to have a poor conversion rate up forward. But the
Tigers had too many runners across the ground and
whilst the Blues did have a
better third quarter the die
had been caste.
Final Score - Ballan 3 4 22
lost Sprngbank 8 15 63
Best - J. Shaw, T. Laurie,
M. Currie, J. McGuire, D.
OHanlon, C. Sharp
The Under 18s suffered their
first loss of the year. The
team was also undermanned
with the withdrawal of Tom
McGregor and the two week
break certainly showed. The
Blues were asleep on the job
in the first quarter and only
scored their first goal before
the main break. By the third
break the Tigers had bagged
seven goals and the Blues
had only one major. Taffe
was the genuine battler up
forward with limited chances on offe. Ryan Bongart and
Hayden Thompson also put
in solid performances but
there were several injuries as
well in the third quarter that
only added to the dull day.
Final Score - Ballan 3 2 20
lost Springbank 9 9 63

Best - S. Dale, R. Bongart, S.

Taffe, H. Webb
The Under 15s were in the
match all day but failed to
adapt to the greasy conditions and should learn
some valuable lessons from
the game. At the first break
the margin was only two
points but in the middle
quarters the Tigers drew
away from the Blues and at
the final break the Tigers
lead by three goals. To the
Blues credit they held their
opponents scoreless in the
final quarter and reduced
the deficit but the damage
had been done. As ever Mac
Popple was the Blues main
goal sneak and in the middle
Luke Hodge and Lachlan
Trickey tried their hardest.
Final Score - Ballan 5 2 32
lost Springbank 6 8 44
Best - L Trickey, L Hodge, M
