Discuss the teaching scenarios (p. 143-147) and discuss the approaches of Mr.

Nguyen, Ms. Dowden and Miss Delgado in terms of providing hands-on materials or
manipulatives, activities to apply learning and opportunities to practice all aspects
of language. What did you learn from this? What specifically interested or inspired
you? Please comment and respond to one of your classmates.

Mrs. Bertoni- Mrs. Bertoni didnt have anything for her students to do. She read to
them the whole time and had them repeat after her. There was no hands-on
material for the students to work with and process. The books states that students
need hands-on experience to have a greater chance at mastering the content
concepts. She also had other students interpret things into Arabic so the whole class
could fully understand. I think she could have put more effort into the lesson and
made an attempt to make the lesson accessible for her ELLs.
Mr. Sherbiny- It has nothing to do with his teaching ability but I like that the teacher
can speak to his students in their native language, which also happens to be his. It
is great that he can connect to them on that level. First he has his students thinkpair-share about what they know about the subject. This is a great way to start the
lesson and get students involved and thinking about the lesson they will be learning
for the day. I think it is genius to have three students model the rotation of the sun,
earth, and moon in front of the class. It really shows a great example for the class to
understand the concept. Mr. Sherbiny has many hands-on materials for his students
to work with and improve their chance of mastering this lesson. He does a great job
of incorporating reading, writing, speaking, and listening into every aspect of his
lesson.
Mrs. Aliheri- I really dont like reading about teacher showing video clips. For the
right lesson with the right subject, and the teacher still teaching I think they can be
valuable. Mrs. Aliheri seems like she is showing the videos because she doesnt
want to or know how to properly teach about this subject. I dont understand why
she thinks her students will completely understand the concept after watching a
short video clip. And these students are ELLs and I am assuming this video is in
English, it would be hard for them to understand in English after watching a video.
She has no hands-on materials for the students to work with. She did to help her
students bridge the gap between languages. This class is for ESL students who have
limited formal school experience and limited literacy. Mrs. Aliheri should not be
teaching this class, this lesson would be awful for native English speakers.

I learned from this that not all people can teach ELL learners. It takes a certain
person with the right experience to positively affect ELL learners school career. In
this class I am learning more and more than it takes a lot of work and effort to come
up with great lesson plans that will teach ELLs what they need to learn.
