management to increase overall classroom achievement

Yoga mats

Room with space for children to practice yoga

Each time students meet, they will:


1. First go around and say how they are feeling (ex:
stressed/not stressed) today (Counselor will model)
2. Thank each other for sharing
3. Counselor will go over group norms and roles
and talk about stress management strategies in a circle.
Examples:
a. Eat healthy meals with plenty of
fruits and vegetables
b. Maintain daily routine and
schedule
c. Exercise regularly
d. Avoid caffeine (can increase
feelings of anxiety and agitation)
e. Do things you enjoy (for
example: art, listening to music, being outdoors,
dancing, writing poetry, reading, etc.)
f. Get good amounts of rest and
sleep
g. State feelings in a clear way (for
example: I feel angry when you yell at me.)
h. Decrease negative self talk (for
example: transform My grades will never get
any better. to I may not be doing to well now,
but my grades can improve if I get extra help and

I do all my homework.)
i. Be with friends who help you
cope in a positive way
j. Learn relaxation techniques
(such as: deep breathing, muscle relaxation,
meditation)
k. Talk to caring adults

4. End with engaging in a yoga practice each
month to give students a consistent destressing activity
that they can hopefully continue on their own time
Plan for evaluation

Process Data: All 8th grade students at St.

Michael's South Shore


Perception Data: Pre/post survey will be given
to classroom students at the beginning and end of the
school year
Outcome Data: The number of students referred
for discipline will decrease by 10%.

Follow Up

8th grade students will engage in yoga practice

once a month. Brief discussion of the benefits of


mindfulness (yoga) will be held with students at the
beginning of the following weeks guidance lesson.
Students will have a few minutes to voice any questions,
comments, concerns about the practice.
