n this issue of the Cadillac Area Business

Magazine, we are dedicating content to
a long-standing program of the Cadillac
Area Chamber of Commerce, the Annual
Governors Breakfast.
By practice, we avoid significant emphasis on program content beyond a brief
capture, or to acknowledge sponsors and
volunteers in this publication. However,
factoring where the Governors Breakfast
started and how it has morphed into a
standing calendar must-do for a sitting
Governor is a remarkable story of getting a
lot of things right, mostly cued to collaboration, hard work and relationships.
I have been directly involved with three
Governors, spanning the Engler, Granhom
and Snyder administrations. I thought it
would be important to cite the overall legacy, some background and, most importantly, why the event matters for the region.
The 2016 Governors Breakfast did
not resemble the inaugural event with
Governor Milliken, a northern Michigan
native son. In 1976, the focus was to promote fall tourism and invite Governor
Milliken as part of October Fiesta events.
The Governors Breakfast has now
evolved into a spring calendar event with
the core purpose of gathering business and
high school seniors (regionally) through
collaboration and support to hear the sitting Governor provide a keynote speech.
The commonality, but the ultimate importance, is being on the radar of the sitting
Governor every single year and maintaining communication with the Office
of the Governor throughout the year.
Relationships matter. That approach has
worked with all three administrations that

I have had direct involvement with and

has produced political opportunity with all
three by messaging Cadillac area matters.
Governor Snyder references this event,
the collaboration and other connectivity
throughout the state and beyond. If ever
a year, a Governor could have said no,
this would have been the year and that
was never factored by the administration. Governor Granholm loved the event,
advocated the importance of the breakfast
and continuation of attending by the next
Governor. That might be contrary to those
who do reflect that an initial turn down
(by administration staff) in year one of the
Granholm administration. That was quickly resolved and actually allowed us to move
the event from fall to the spring to continue the tradition and ultimately preferred
by the chamber.
The political reality is this, that when factoring a last term in elected office it is very
easy to say no to attending events every
year or ever attending again. We have been
fortunate.
Through staff dedication, phenomenal
volunteerism, great connection to area
schools, business and education collaboration and getting the event detail right,
the Chamber has earned the respect of
five administrations. As staff, we thank
our members, supporters, the education
community, volunteers and more, because
without any component, there would not
be prospect of a 40th Annual Governors
Breakfast in 2017.

Silent Observer
celebrates 25 years!

Visionary Partners:

25 years of anything is a pretty big deal, but 25

years of an all-volunteer local community program designed to fight and reduce crime is a colossal deal. While similar organizations in communities throughout the US have come and gone, ours
sustained. It not only sustained; it thrived, grew
and kept up with the times.
No question the success and longevity of the
Cadillac Area Silent Observer (CASO) program is a reflection of the communities it serves.
The leaders and volunteers of these communities, who serve and support CASO, recognize
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. By their selfless giving of time, in-kind contributions and cash donations, they continue the legacy of the Cadillac Area Silent Observer.
This means safer and more viable neighborhoods for all of us to live, work and play.
25 years ago a group of citizens in Cadillac said enough is enough. Year after year they kept
that vision and now here we are having just achieved our quarter-century mark. What excites
and drives the board members today is the thrill of envisioning the next 25 years for CASO.
Together, we will be, Standing Strong in Crime Prevention!

Annual Governors Breakfast continues local, Lansing connection

About the only thing from keeping the states governor from coming to the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerces Annual Governors
breakfast is fog. Other than that, the sitting governor has attended the
governors breakfast for the past 39 years.
Even when fog prevented the governor from actually being in
Cadillac, then Governor John Engler answered questions from students during a confernce call at the event.
The event holds appeals to the governors office because it is a
chance to connect with business leaders as well as students in northern Michigan.
Every year Governor Rick Snyder has the opportunity to take ques-

tions from business leaders and students, which gives him the chance
to hear about their thoughts and experiences, which he in turn uses
to develop plans to create an even brighter future for Michiganders
today and for generations to come, Snyders office said. It often leads
to the Governor sharing stories about northern Michigan when he is
traveling to other areas of the state.
I think its great; I think its a wonderful event, Snyder said after
the 39th Annual Governors Breakfast. Its really about one generation helping another and how they can learn from one another and in
a form that brings that convergence back.

Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce - MaY/June 2016 5

One of the hallmarks of the Annual Governors Breakfast is when area high school students ask the governor questions. Here is Governor Rick Snyder with the students that asked questions
during the breakfast in 2012.

Snyder pointed out that northern Michigan has experienced tremendous success in the areas of skilled trades growth and economic development. The Wexford-Missaukee Career Tech Center education programs in northern Michigan are particularly impressive, and in terms
of overall education some exciting things are happening in the area
that deserve to be highlighted and used as a model for how others can
achieve success statewide, Snyder said.
Following his stop in Cadillac, Governor Snyder penned a guest
column for the Cadillac News to reiterate the importance of northern
Michigan and the message from the Governors Breakfast.
Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at the 39th Annual Cadillac
Governors Breakfast. I addressed members of the business community as well as local officials and high school students about Michigans
economic comeback as well as the success of various businesses in the
region, Snyder wrote.

MaY/June 2016 - Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce

Munson Hospital-Cadillacs Tonya Smith introduces Michigan Governor Rick Snyder during
the Cadillac Chamber of Commerces Annual Governors Breakfast.

With Michigans unemployment rate being at its lowest point in 15

years, we have many regions to thank, with one of those being northern Michigan. Since February 2011, total employment is up 13,526
and the jobless rate has come down by seven percent.
There is still much more work to be done, but in Michigan, we
tackle our problems head-on. We work together as one community to
ensure the success of our state, our people, and our future. Michigan
is poised to be a leader as we move through the 21st Century. In order
to continue growing we must keep moving forward and build on what
has already been done.
Cadillac has been an area leader when it comes to filling the talent gap and Michigans economic recovery. Manufacturing and skilled
trade jobs create nearly 26 percent of Cadillacs workforce. With
businesses expanding in the city, companies are looking to Northern
Michigan to build new facilities and create more jobs for the community.
Education is pivotal in the continued success of Michigans reinvention. I created the 21st Century Education Commission with this in
mind. A four-year degree is not the only path that can lead to great
success. Skilled trades training and education are becoming an
increasingly important sector where many find fulfillment and career
stability. Weve made a commitment in multiple parts of the state to
encourage skilled trade development, including northern Michigan.
Baker College in Cadillac is doing an excellent job in this area since
starting the Michigan Advanced Technician Training (MAT2) program
for Mechatronics at their Lake City Campus. This mechatronics program offers students the opportunity to use college work and paid onthe-job experience to become a master of a skilled technical profession.
With our past to keep us motivated, Michigan continues to innovate
and inspire. Michigan residents can feel assured that our state is headed in a positive direction. With our focus on education, infrastructure,
and the economy we have the tools necessary to keep building a stronger Michigan that continues moving forward.

May & June Health Tip:

The Power of Protein

Calories arent the only thing you need to watch as

you get older.
Protein is important because it helps keep your musc
les strong. You
need muscles for strength and balance and it also
keeps your heart
strong and boosts your immune system to keep you
from getting sick.

Women should get at least 46 grams of protein a

day and men 56. People
with some conditions like kidney disease may need
less. Spreading your
protein throughout the day helps keep you full so
you eat fewer calories.
Beef, pork, and lamb are protein powerhouses, but
pick lean options like
round and loin and ground beef that has 5% or less
fat. Red meat should be
enjoyed with moderate portion sizes. Choose it less
often than other sources
like poultry and fish. A 3-ounce serving of meat (the
size of a deck of cards)
has about 22 grams of protein.
Dairy foods, soybeans, protein drinks, nuts and seeds
are also great
sources of protein. If you have questions about your
protein requirements check with your doctor or
a registered dietitian.

MARCH Lecture Luncheon

Rural health care faces

challenges & opportunities
In the 21st century, rural health care providers who keep as many services local as
they can and utilize partnerships for those
not provided will have the most success.
That was part of the message that Munson
Healthcare Cadillac Hospital President
Tonya Smith recently presented during
the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce
Lecture Lunch series at Baker College.
About one year ago, Smith was hired as
Munson Healthcare was in the process of
assuming ownership of the former Mercy
Hospital. Prior to joining the Munson team,
Smith served as vice president of operations
for Valley Health System in Winchester,
Virginia, for six years. She also served in
hospital leadership roles in both pharmacy
and clinical informatics for several health
systems in both West Virginia and Virginia.
The key is to keep things close to
home, she said. The mission of Munson
Healthcare and Cadillac Hospital is to keep
things local and have a partner to do the
things we dont do.
In addition, Smith said it is important for
rural healthcare facilities such as Cadillac
Hospital to look at giving more value to
patients in their care rather than just having
high volume of patients.
She added that is especially true in the
advent of the Affordable Care Act.
Payment models are changing, she said.
In the past, the more patients you saw, the
more you were paid. Now it is about whether
there is value to what you offer. Are you get-

ting them better faster? Did you meet clinical needs? That is how we get paid now.
Again she pointed to the need to have partnerships and mergers to achieve those goals.
With the ACA, hospitals and health care providers are not able to name their own prices
but instead about 90 percent of payment
is based on performing the service and the
other 10 to 20 percent could be based on if
the patient had a great experience.
When it comes to obstacles, Smith said the
No. 1 issue locally is attracting new doctors,
both primary care and specialists, to the
area. She cited several reasons why it seems
to be more difficult to get the doctors that
are needed.
They included the added responsibility of running a business as a local provider
as well as the fact that many new doctors
would rather work for a bigger organization

DuroSpeed

where they can do their jobs, help people

and go home. She also said things like social
and community challenges as well as potential employment options for spouses can be
issues attracting providers.
With that in mind, Smith said the hospital
has been working to showcase the community including the quality of schools, retail
and restaurants, churches as well as just
focusing on why they would want to come
to Cadillac.
It is our No. 1 priority (to bring more doctors to town), she said. If we can really
solidify the provider base in the community then the hospital and overall health of
the community will continue to grow and
improve, she said.
During her presentation, Smith was happy
to announce that a total of eight new doctors
would be coming to work in Cadillac.
