By-Laws
ARTICLE 2: MEMBERSHIP
Section 1: Membership is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership
is by Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership,
service, and citizenship. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to
demonstrate these qualities.
Section 2: Candidates will become members when they complete the membership
packet, pay the $10 membership fee, and attend the induction ceremony.
Section 3: Once a student is inducted into the Spratley chapter of the National Junior
Honor Society, he/she must complete ten hours of community service within the next
summer/school year.
Section 4: A National Junior Honor Society member who transfers from another school
and brings a letter from the former principal or chapter to the new school, the student
shall be accepted automatically as a member in the new schools chapter.
Section 3: Candidates must have earned either A honor roll or A/B honor roll during the
first three quarters of the current school year.
Section 4: Candidates must display positive character traits and not receive any in school
or out of school suspensions during the current school year.
Section 5: Students must pay a ten-dollar membership fee before he/she can be inducted
into the Spratley chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.
Section 6: A description of the selection procedure shall be published on the Spratley
NJHS website at www.spratleynjhs.weebly.com.
Section 7: The National Council and the NASSP shall not review the judgment of the
Faculty Council regarding selection of individual members to local chapters.
ARTICLE 4: DISMISSAL
Section 1: The procedure of dismissal shall be determined by the Faculty Council in
compliance with the rules and regulations of the National Junior Honor Society.
Section 2: Members who fall below the standards which were the basis for their selection
shall be promptly warned in writing by the chapter advisor and given a reasonable
amount of time to correct the deficiency, except that in the case of flagrant violation of
school rules or civil laws. A member does not, necessarily, have to be warned.
Section 3: The following are standards for dismissal or probation:
a.
Students who do not make A or A/B honor roll in any given grading period
will be placed on academic probation and receive a warning. He/she will be
dismissed from the National Junior Honor Society if he/she does not bring
their grades up and achieve A or A/B honor roll for the remaining grading
periods.
b.
Students who receive in school suspension or out of school
suspension will be dismissed from the National Junior Honor Society.
c.
Students who receive a detention referral for academics or behavior
will receive a warning. If any further disciplinary referrals occur,
students will be dismissed from the National Junior Honor Society.
d.
Students who miss three or more regular meetings without a valid
excuse will be dismissed from the Spratley chapter of the National
Junior Honor Society.
e.
Students who do not attend National Junior Honor Society sponsored events
without a valid excuse may be dismissed from the Spratley chapter of the
National Junior Honor Society.
Section 4: In all cases of impending dismissal, a member shall have a right to written
notification of charges and a hearing before the Faculty Council.
Section 5: A member who has been dismissed may appeal the decision of the Faculty
Council under the same rules for disciplinary appeals in the school district.
Section 6: The National Council and the NASSP shall hear no appeals in dismissal cases.
