    Becauseofdecreasinglocalopportunities,jobhuntersarehavingtosearchfurtherand
    furtherfromtheirareaofresidence.Thiscausestheproblemofcommuting.Sincethemagnitude
    ofthissituationhasincreasedexponentially,sohavethecommuters.Thisleadstoexcessive
    congestionoutonthehighwaystothepointwherevehiclesareatastandstill.Whichthen
    extendstheperiodofcommutebyhourssometimes.Nottomention,whenanaccidentoccurs,by
    thetimeofficialsgetthemesscleanedup,trafficcanbebackedupformileswithoutend.
    Becauseofthisexhaustingissue,Ichosetohelpcomeupwithasolutiontotheevergrowing
    traffic.Toultimately,diminishifnotabolishit.Thetargetconsumerwouldbethegovernmentof
    theUnitedStates.Theirneedbeingtoreducecongestiononthemotorwaysandtoeventually
    improvethecommuterslifestyle.Myintentionistocomeupwithsomethingtohelpalleviate
    thisproblemandbepracticalenoughforthegovernmenttoimplementitaroundthecountry.

    ResearchSummary

    Manyideashavebeenimplementedtoreducetrafficinpopulatedareas.Oneofwhichis
    thecarpoollanewhichwasaddedtomajorroadwaysinAmericaaroundthe1970s.Thislane
    wasdesignedtogivevehicleswithmultiplepassengerstheirownlane.Whichgreatlyexpedited
    theircommutebecauseofthelowdensityofusers.Thiscreationwasbeneficialbecauseit
    reducedoverallusageofthemainlanesbyafewpercent,thereforedecreasingtraffic.However,
    italsoencouragethosesinglecommuterstotravelwithpassengersgoinginasimilardirection.
    Theirincentivewastoskipthemainstreamtrafficandheadovertothecarpoollanewithfarless
    holdup.Eventually,carpoolingbecamesocommonthatbothlanesturnedouttobeequally
    congestedbecauseofthegrowingamountofcommuters.Lateron,additionalruleswereadded
    forcarpoollaneuse.Forexample,ifyoudroveahybridoralternativefuelvehicle,youwerealso

    grantedaccesstothislane,evenifyouweretravellingalone.Thisfurtherbalancedthemix
    betweencarpoolersandsolocommuterswhichcausedmorecongestioninthecarpoollane.

    Thisnextinventioncalledtherampmeterwasimplementedin1966ontheroadwaysof
    LosAngeles,evenbeforecarpoollanes.Theyweredesignedtoregulatetrafficflowandtherate
    atwhichvehiclesenteredthehighway.Ultimately,theyreducedcongestionexponentially.By
    stoppingcarsbrieflybeforeentering,travelerssavedseveralminutesontheiractualcommute.
    Thesesimplestoplightsallowhighwaystooperateatmaximumefficiencywithoutcreatingan
    overload.

    Myideagoingintotothisprojectwastosomehowgreatlyreducetraffic.Tothepoint
    whereanysortofholdupwouldnottakeplace,unlessintheeventofanaccident.Tomake
    highwaysfastpaceagainwithplentifulroom.Especiallyinbusycities,wheretrafficisnotorious
    suchasLosAngeles.Mygoalwastoultimatelyexterminatethisinthemostpracticalway
    possible.TheobvioussolutionIsaw,wascreatingadditionallanes.

    SolutionSummary

    Byaddingasecondstorytoasectionofthe
    traditionalhighway,thetotalareahasbeen
    doubled.Meaningideallytrafficdensity
    wouldbecutinhalf.Theadditionallanes
    allowcommuterstowidelydisperse
    themselvesinordertoavoidcongestion

    Uprampsanddownrampswereaddedto
    accessbothstories.Additionally,rampmeters
    wereincludedonbothrampstoregulate
    trafficflowoneachlayer.Thedesignofthe
    rampsensuredtrafficflowedquicklybut
    evenlywhenmergingontothedesiredlayer
    Yellowcautionarystripswereincludedto
    informdriverstoyieldtoothervehiclesand
    enteronlywhenitissafe.Thissimple
    additionwillpreventaccidentsandkeep
    trafficstable

    Arrowsindicatingpossibledirectionoftravel
    werealsoadded.Thismadeitcleartodrivers
    whentheycantaketheofframptotheupper
    orlowerdeckwhentrafficbecomestoo
    dense.Ultimatelymakingtheircommute
    easier.
