Whos this poem addressed to?

What poem did she write?

Why?

Jessie Pope
She wrote Whos for the Game
in 1916 for the Daily Mail and it
was published in the
Newspaper.
At the time conscription did not
exist and the war effort needed
men to join up.
The also Government needed to
make the general public feel
positive about war.
Jessie Pope wrote many poems
that supported the war and
persuaded men to join up.

What did people think of her

poetry?

There were two different opinions on

her poetry
Some believed it was
good for morale.
a letter sent from a
soldier at the front that
proclaims her poems
much admired by us all
out here and will be
such a buck up for
the soldier's wife:
bucking up means so
much to those at home
as well as for us.

Some believed it was a lie

and wanted people to
hear the truth.
It compelled Wilfred Owen
to dedicate Dulce et
decorum est in his
original manuscript To
Jessie Pope, etc, then in a
subsequent version To a
Certain Poetess before
deleting the dedication
altogether in favour of
the more cryptic
reference to my friend in
the final lines that
precede the Old Lie.

Why tell the old lie?

Remember back to the lesson on

Propaganda what is the old lie
and why was it told?

Who's for the Game?

Whos for the game, the biggest thats played,
The red crashing game of a fight?
Wholl grip and tackle the job unafraid?
And who thinks hed rather sit tight?
Wholl toe the line for the signal to Go!?
Wholl give his country a hand?
Who wants a turn to himself in the show?
And who wants a seat in the stand?
Who knows it wont be a picnic not muchYet eagerly shoulders a gun?
Who would much rather come back with a crutch
Than lie low and be out of the fun?
Come along, lads
But youll come on all right
For theres only one course to pursue,
Your country is up to her neck in a fight,
And shes looking and calling for you.
