FORMATION OF COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE

1) Most adjectives form their comparative degree by adding-er and their


superlative by adding-est to the positive.
Eg: deep deeper deepest
thick
thicker thickest
2) If the positive ends in e, only-r and-st are added.
Eg: brave braver
bravest
wise wiser
wisest
3) If the positive ends in y and the y is preceded by a consonant,
the y is changed into i before adding-er and-est. But if the y is
preceded by a vowel, then y is not changed into I.
Eg: costly costlier
costliest
lazy
lazier
laziest
gay
gayer
gayest
4) If the positive ends in a consonants and the consonant is preceded by
a short vowel, the final consonant is doubled before adding-er and-est.
Eg: hot hotter
hottest
dim dimmer dimmest
fat
fatter
fattest
5) Many adjectives of two syllables and all adjectives of more than two
syllables, from the comparative by adding more to the positive and
the superlative by adding most to the positive.
Eg: important
more important
most important
Urgent

6) Some adjectives form their comparative and superlative in an irregular
way.
Eg: good
better
best
Much
more
most
Little
less
least
Syllables
A syllable is the sound of a vowel(a, e, i, o, u,)that is produced when
pronouncing a word. A word may have one or more syllables.
Eg: 1) tall 1 syllable.
2) faithful 2 syllables.
3) beautiful -3 syllables.
4) intelligent- 4 syllables.
