d. W.K.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to
compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what
they are writing about and supply some information about the
topic.
DOK: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of how to write
the letter X, what sound it makes, and examples of words that have
X in them.
ABCD Lesson Objective: Students will correctly write the letter X
in the air with their fingers.
Learning targets: Letter-sound correspondence, answering
questions from a text, counting by 1s, and drawing pictures/writing
to explain an event.
Description of assessment: When asked, students will give
examples of words that have the letter X in them. When asked,
students will demonstrate how to write capital and lowercase X and
give the sound that it makes.
Materials needed and their location: White board, markers,
projector (classroom), ingredients for recipe (I will bring from home),
worksheets (I will bring copies).
Procedures:
a. Ask students what the letter of the week is (letter X).
b. Ask students to think about words that start with X or have X in
it. After a few seconds of pondering time, ask students to raise
their hand if they thought of one.
i. Write the words that they give on the board.
c. Tell students that we will now watch a fun video about the letter
X.

ii. Ask students: What sound does X make?
iii. Ask students to write a capital letter X in the air.
iv. Ask students to write a lower case letter x in the air.
v. Ask students what words were in the video that had X in
them (fox, box, ox, tux, T-Rex, x-ray, extinct, exciting).

mix on the board.
d. Ask students for examples of things that we can mix.
i. Now, we will listen to a story about someone who is going
to mix something.

1. Pause to ask question: What is the old woman
mixing/what did she make?
iii. At the end of the story ask what happened at the
beginning, middle, and end of the story.
e. Just like the old lady in the story, we are going to mix our own
recipe. We are going to make some peanut butter chocolate chip
bites.

ii. First we will add the oats to the bowl. We will need 7 of
these scoops (1/4 c measuring cup). Call on a quiet
student to come up and pour the oats into the bowl and
have the other students count each scoop.
iii. Next, we will add the mini chocolate chips. We will need 6
of these scoops (1 TBS). Call on a quiet student to pour
the spoonfuls into the bowl while the other students count.
iv. Next, we will add the honey. We just need one scoop (1/3
c) of honey. Call on quiet student to pour in the honey.
v. Last, we will add the peanut butter. We just need one (3/4
c) scoop of the peanut butter too. Call on a quiet student
to add the peanut butter to the mix.
vi. Now we will mix it all together and roll the dough into
balls. Everyone that wants to will get to try one.
VIII. Closure:
a. Raise your hand if you have ever helped your mom, or grandma,
or anyone mix the ingredients together in a recipe? What did you
make? Call on several students.
b. Hold up worksheet. I want you to draw a picture of a time when
you mixed together a recipe and made something. Then I want
you to write a sentence about it. When you are done, come show
me your picture and read me your sentence. Passout papers.
