Lesson Plan 4th Grade Science

Michigan Standards: Ecosystems: Identify organisms as part of a food
chain or food web.
Lesson Objective: Having discussed organisms in their ecosystem and
watched the video, students should be able to categorize organisms into five
producers, five consumers, and five decomposers with 100% accuracy.
Prior Knowledge: Students know what a habitat, organism, and ecosystem
are. The students know the difference between the living and non living.
They also know the resources plants need to survive for example soil,
sunlight, and water
Set Activity: First, I will ask the students what they know about food chains
and who or what can be included in them. I will then play the video about
how a food chain works:

After the video I will discuss with the students the key words like consumer,
producer, decomposer, predator, and prey. Then I will pass out cups so the
students will be able to create their own food chain.
Lesson Input:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Ask the students what they know about food chains.

Watch video about food chains.
Discuss the key words in video.
Put the students in groups.
Pass out cups and pictures of organisms.
Explain and show how the students should create food chain.
Have students cut pictures and glue on cups.
Have students play activity board game.

Modeling: I will demonstrate my cup food chain to the students. I will

explain how decomposers are at the bottom then producers come next and
finally the consumers on top. The picture of the organisms will be on the
front of the cup and either consumer, producer, or decomposer on the back. I
will also display the chain on the elmo for the students in the back or for
those that cant see it.
Guided Practice: The class is divided into four tables of six or seven, I will
have to divide the students into groups of three. After that I will walk around
making sure the students are creating the food chains properly. I will also
assist the students that are having trouble.

Independent Practice: The students are working in groups but they have
to work individually on their cup to figure out what category the organism
falls under and where it goes in the food chain.
Check for Understanding: I will check for understanding by walking all
over the class and monitoring the students work. I will also ask the students
why they labeled an organism as they did, making sure they actually
understand the food chain.
Closure: Using the activity board I have created, the students will be able
to come and place an organism where they believe it belongs in the
ecosystem I have created. The activity board will have an empty ecoystem
drawn onto it and the student will build up the ecosystem.
Homework: The students were told to write and draw four consumers, four
producers and two decomposers. The 10 organisms can either be in the
students home or can be found outside.

Multiple Intelligences
Interpersonal- The students are working in groups to create the cup food
chain.
Intrapersonal- The students will be able to work on their homework by
themselves, thinking about what organisms fit in the categories.
Bodily Kinesthetic- The students will be moving around figuring out where
organisms go on activity board.
Visual Spatial- The students watched the video regarding food chains and
saw how a food chain works on the activity board. The students also created
a model of a food chain to show their understanding.
Naturalist- The students were learning about how animals and plants survive
in an ecosystem.
