Schools Out!

: A Study on Free Time in College for

First-Years and Sophomores at SCU
Purpose of the Study:
We aim to pinpoint specifically how students at Santa Clara University manage their time
outside of academic pursuits - that is, studying and completing homework assignments alone as
well as attending class. Furthermore we also aim to study whether there a difference between
how first and second-year students use their free time.

Study Procedures:
Survey: We have sent out an online survey via by posting it on social media and emailing it to
our peers. The survey presented a list of extracurricular activities which students would check.
The next question asked for the top five most involved and time-consuming activities. The
following questions inquired into the students purpose in participating in those time-consuming
activities. Finally, the last set of questions asked the student whether or not the activities are
related to their major, minor if declared or potential academic area of interest.
Interviews: We recruited interviewees through the survey. The last question was whether the
student would interested in being contacted for a 10 minute interview.

Documenting Observations and Interviews:

We will audio record interviews using our phones.
