Survey Methodology
2/29/2016 thru 3/18/2016
Zogby Analytics was commissioned by the Community Association Institute to
conduct a hybrid (online and live operator telephone) survey of 800 h omeowners and
Condominium Association Members.
A hybrid methodology was used to determine if a significant deference would be
observed between the online and telephone sample. It was determined that a
significant deference between the sampling modalities was not observed and the
data was combined to provide an overall data set.
Telephone samples were randomly drawn from random telephone lists. Up to four
calls were made to reach a sampled telephone number, respondents that were not
available but qualified to respond were allowed to set appointments to be recalled
within the time frame of the field work.
Additionally, using interactive resources, thousands of adults were invited to
participate in this online survey. Each invitation is password coded and secure so
that one respondent can only access the survey one time.
Using information based on census data, voter registration figures, CIA fact books
and exit polls, we use complex weighting techniques to best represent the
demographics of the population being surveyed. Weighted variables may include
age, race, gender, region, party, education, and religion.
Based on a confidence interval of 95%, the margin of error for 800 is +/- 3.5
percentage points. This means that all other things being equal, the identical
survey repeated will have results within the margin of error 95 times out of 100.
Subsets of the data have a larger margin of error than the whole data set. As a rule
we do not rely on the validity of very small subsets of the data especially sets
smaller than 50-75 respondents. At that subset we can make estimations based on
the data, but in these cases the data is more qualitative than quantitative.
Additional factors can create error, such as question wording and question order.

Market Research
The Zogby Online Survey is conducted using nationwide panels of adults that have
agreed to participate in public opinion research. From the panels a random selection
of potential survey respondents is selected and invited to participate in a survey. All
of the research techniques, history, industry guidelines, and adherences to
statistical principles that have become part of the Zogby Telephone Survey are now
also part of the Zogby Online Survey.
For each survey, potential survey participants are randomly selected across the
online panels. No one knows ahead of time if they will be selected to participate in a
certain survey. The random sampling is based on select demographic variables on a
survey-by-survey basis. To ensure the best basis for conformity between the
sampling and the target group, quota sampling is used as needed. The sampling
frames use demographic variables, and if needed behavioral variables as part of the
sampling and segmentation for each survey. For a standard nationwide survey the
unique sample selection is based upon a representative sample of the respondents
that has been disaggregated by gender, age and geography. When the required
criteria for the survey have been established a random sample is pulled to receive
the email invitations to participate in the survey.
When panel participants respond to the email invitation to participate in the poll,
they are taken via a secure link to online survey software where they complete the
survey. The link expires after a single use so no respondent can take the survey
more than once and the link cannot be forwarded and used by someone else.
The collected data is then analyzed and as needed weighted according to census
data, previous exit polls and voter turnout models created through exhaustive
research by historical data as well as decades of experience.
