Developmental Documents for Mark Making

Mark Making is defined as lines, patterns and textures in art work. It applies to any
art materials and on any surface. Some materials that are used are pencils, paper,
crayons, markers, colored pencils, and chalk. It helps promote social, physical,
intellectual, and emotional development for children in many different ways
Social development- There was many different ways it helped with social
development. We had to wait our turn to be able to use the spray bottle and the
turntable. We talked about the different colors we were using during the projects. I
felt like I belonged in every art work, that I could do it. We also developed strategies
to make our art work better.
Physical development- Fine motor development: I held crayons and markers in my
hand and sprayed the spray bottle with my fingers. Large motor development: I
used my arms to sway the filter in the air, too dry it and used my arms to dance
with a marker. Used my eyes and my hand to decide where I want to draw. Sensory
development: The spray bottle water, smelt like lemon, and I was able to feel the
difference when the filter was wet, compared to when it was dry. Attention span: I
was wanting to keep working on my filter even when it was time to switch to a
different table.
Intellectual development- Number concepts- we were comparing amounts of blue
that we all had on our art work. Classification- I was able to use an object in a
different way; I was able to see that normally my parents would use these normal
objects such as filters and record player but I used it for art instead. Seriation- I saw
that it was smoother when I sprayed water on the filter, I also put the colors in a
pattern that I only understand. Conservation- I was able to see that even when it
wasnt in a cup shape, and spread out straight, it was still the same filter. Spatial
relations- I was able to put the lid on the marker. Temporal Relation- I had to wait my
turn to use the spray bottle. Representation- I was writing in various ways, such as
scribbling.
Emotional development- We were able to express how we feel through art. We were
able to express that verbally by saying what we liked about the projects, also
through the creative part in the art. I was able to make choices and plan out what
my next actions were going to be. I was able to enjoy myself extremely.
Overall I fully enjoyed mark making. I have done many mark making in my life and
have prepared different art works for children in preschools. We were always told to
try and think outside of the box for art work. Yet the art work we did, I would have
never thought of doing and made me think of what else I could plan for children to
do.
