What scientific processes will you need to use to complete the task successfully?

Remember, scientific knowledge and understanding

assists when making choices about materials most
suited to a purpose.
This means understanding the properties of materials
helps you to make appropriate choices about which
materials are best suited to their purpose.
The process you will be using for your packaging
challenge includes:
planning your design
making a prediction about what you think will happen
trialling the package during the build process (trial
and error)
testing your design to see if it is suitable
evaluating what happened
redesigning or retesting a new package.
In Lesson 12 you will plan and build, and in Lesson 13
you will test and evaluate your packaging challenge.

Plan a package design

1. Look at the fragile and brittle item youve chosen to test your package.
2. Follow the packaging challenge instructions and answer the following questions.

Investigation packaging challenge

Aim of investigation: To design and construct a package to hold a fragile item and
protect it during handling.
PART A
Plan
a) Record ideas for your package design.

Materials and equipment

b) List materials and equipment you will use to construct your package.
Package design
c) Draw your design in your Science journal.
Prediction
d) Predict and explain the suitability of your package for the purpose.

Construct your package

a) List the steps taken to construct the package.

STOP

PART B of the packaging challenge.

PART B

In Lesson 12, you started your packaging challenge

investigation and completed the plan and build stages.
During this lesson, you will complete the testing and
evaluating stages.
You will need to collect your fragile item and the
package you designed and constructed that holds the
fragile item.
I hope your package will protect the fragile item during
your testing. Good luck!

Test the package for its properties

1. Collect your package from Lesson 12 and put the fragile item inside.

2. Test your packagings suitability for protecting the fragile item. Ways you might test
your package include dropping it from a height, playing catch with it or rolling it across
the floor.

3. Answer the following questions.

Test your package

Remember that your package has to include the fragile item.
a) Explain how you tested the package.
Results
b) Explain what happened to the package and its contents.
Explain results
Discussion
c) Describe how well the package protected the fragile item and explain why.
d) Describe how the results match or dont match your prediction and explain why.

Evaluate investigation
How could I improve
my design?
e) How could you change your design?
f) What could you add?
g) What could you remove?
h) Record your ideas about how the package could be improved.
i)
Think about how scientists research and work to solve problems. What scientific
processes did you follow to construct the package?
j)
Record your ideas about how the package could be improved.

5. Give the photo of your package to your tutor to show Professor Polly.
6. Add any new science words to your Word wall.

design, test, trial and error, predict, evaluate

k) How did you go about overcoming a packaging problem?

Packaging Self-Evaluation

Self-Evaluation:
Rate how original your package is:
5 a completely new design
4
3 based on an existing package with some
original ideas
2
1 its a copy of an existing package
Rate the construction of your package:
5 well-built
4
3 works well but is fragile
2
1 falling apart
Rate the appearance of your package:
5 it looks amazing!
4
3 it looks pretty good
2
1 it looks like a pile of rubbish

What were some design challenges you solved while

making this package?
