Grammar and Usage- 20 sentences (1 point each); Read each sentence carefully to determine whether
there are any grammatical or usage errors. Answer choices: A= correct; B= incorrect
+Examples:

-The dog lost its collar while it was playing at the park. (B)
-My brother, who is very tall, plays basketball. (A)

Literary terminology- 15 terms (1 point each); matching; Be familiar with the following words: verbal
irony, symbolism, simile, rhetorical question, pun, personification, oxymoron, metaphor, imagery,
hyperbole, denotation, connotation, apostrophe, allusion, alliteration

III.

Non-fiction- You will be provided with a copy of a one page essay to read. 15 multiple choice questions (1
point each); There will be questions about content and vocabulary.

IV.

Drama- You will be expected to respond to 15 multiple choice questions about Romeo and Juliet.
(1 pt. each)

V.

Epic- You will be provided with a one page excerpt from The Odyssey (not one of the excerpts covered in
class) to read. 10 multiple choice questions (1 pt. each)

VI.

Short answer/essay (pick one only; 25 points)... Your response to selected question should be at least two
full paragraphs (minimum of eight sentences in each) in length. Your paragraph must contain specific
examples and explanations.
Your choices:
A.
Artists often use their works to explore social themes. Select one poem, non-fiction essay, short
story, novel, or play from among those studied this year and identify the social issue or concern presented
in your selection. Then, identify the authors/poets viewpoint(s) and explain how he examines this issue.
What suggestions are made for change and/or reform? Your response should be filled with specific
information, examples, and explanations.
B.
Select one character from either Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet or Homers The Odyssey and
write a complete analysis of your selection. This should include a physical description, as well as an
analysis of the characters personality based upon what he says, what he does, and what other characters
say about him. Your response should be filled with specific information, examples, and explanations.
