InBrianWallisBlackBodies,WhiteScience,Wallisusesthediscussiononthe
historyofphotographyasanavenuetoexplorethefacetsofwhichphotographyand
sciencehasplayedapartinobjectifyingandinferiorizingofAfricanAmericansduring
slavery.Duringthetimeofslavery,photographyandthestudyofpeoplethrough
anatomyandscientificresearchwasatitsutmostboomingtime.Manyscientists,like
thosementionedinthearticle,werestudyingthehumanskeletonandgainingafurther
explanationofevolution,creation,classification,andtypificationofAfricanAmericans.
ThroughoutthearticleWallisexplorestheobjectificationthatAfricanAmericanswent
throughfromthebeginningofthe19thCenturyandthebeckonsofslavery.Healso
exploresthewayinwhich
daguerreotypesplates
(165)andseparationsofracial
identitiesbegantoform.
Walliscollectsavastamountofevidencethatthoroughlysupportstheargument
andissuethatheispresenting.Wallisregardsthestudiesandclassificationsthat
scientistslikeLouisAgassiz,BaronGeorgesCuvier,andDr.SamuelMorton(165,166)
usedinthe19thcenturytounderstandandclassifyAfricanAmericansinhumanistic
speakings.Itisinhisexplorationofevidencethathedrawsconclusiontothefactthat

thedehumanizingandscientificresearchthatwasbeingconductedbytheworld
renownedscientiststookpartinthebeginningofthegeneratingofstereotypesand
blackinferiority.
Wallispresentsevidencethroughstudycases,archivedwritings,and
photographstoprovethepointofthestigmatizationandlacklusterrespectAfrican
Americansweretreatedwith.AfricanAmericansweretreatedasnothingmorethan
objects,andWallisdoesamorethanadequatejobinshowcasingtheblatantrealityof
thesituation.Theevidencethathecollectsistoldinachronologicalsequenceofevents
thatusesthestoriesofthescientistsasguidelinestothegradualincreaseof
objectificationthatAfricanAmericanswereputthrough.Hedefinesthedifferent
subgenresinphotographyandwhentheywereinventedandhowthenewtechnology
wasusedtogainabetterunderstandingofslaves.Heusesalloftheevidencethathe
presentstodrawattentiontotheoversexualizatonandstereotypesthatweregenerated
andusesthenamesofthephotographersasfurtherbacking.Theuseofthenames,
books,andwritingsthatwerecollectedduringthistimefurthervalidatestheargument
thatheisattemptingtomake.
Theevidencethathepresentedisveryconvincinganddetailed.Itisextremely
believableandsupportablewithhisusageofthephotoarchivesandhistoricalbacking
asacontextualvalidationtothepointthatisbeingmade.Itisconvincingbecausethe
storythathetellswiththeevidenceisseeminglyaccurateandtruthfulconsideringthe
timeperiodandhistoricalcontextthatispresented.
