The resource created is in the form of an online quiz in the framework provided by Kahoot. The game is called How
are gender and sexually diverse students marginalised in secondary schools? This group has devised the quiz
questions, in order to highlight some of the main issues and themes that this group deemed important for teachers to
include when discussing gender and sexual diversity within the classroom.
The game highlights a number of different theories. These include symbolic interactionism, hegemonic masculinity and
social reproduction. Symbolic interactionism involves students using their own understandings of social behaviours to
create and determine their own meanings and understandings of gender and sexually diverse students in schools.
Hegemonic masculinity is also highlighted through the student's past understanding of traditional gender roles and how
they apply those roles to the game. Social reproduction of societal ideals can also be seen in the students' selection of
answers, as they will reflect the students societal understandings and what they have learnt from parents and peers.
For the key learning area of English, a teacher can utilise this teaching resource when studying a novel involving a
gender diverse character, for example, Orlando by Virginia Woolf, which has a transgender character as the
protagonist. As a business studies teacher, this resource could be adapted by introducing scenarios that are different
from the norm of heterosexual case studies. This could create meaning for students who may not conform to the
traditional male and female genders. In addition, this quiz could be adapted in business by emphasising the different
types of bullying that may occur in the workplace and how this influences the day-to-day operations of the business.
Within the key learning area of Music this resource could be used as support when analysing historically or socially
relevant songs or artists. For example, Walk on the wild side by Lou Reed, as the main content depicts a transgender
person.
This resource uses direct instruction and programmed instruction as effective pedagogical strategy to learning. Peer
based learning is also a possible strategy included in this resource.
