Lesson Plan
Title: Healthy Smiles
Goals: Talk about healthy nutrition and why its important for our teeth. Encourage
them to brush and floss properly twice a day for two minutes.
Instructional Objectives:

Who has been to the dentist?

Who brushes their teeth in the morning and at night?

Discuss sugar bugs, and plaque

Talk about decay and cavities

Show pictures of plaque with disclosing solution and pictures of decay

Talk about healthy snacks vs. unhealthy snacks

Homecare instructions and demonstration (encouraged adult supervision)

Let the kids show us how they brush their teeth on the puppets

Hand out homecare bags

Assessment

We started with the survey to see if they had ever been to the
dentist and if they were brushing and flossing at home.
The questions were presented to the whole group and we asked
them to raise their hands so we could collect the data from
their answers.
The average age of the kids was 4 years old, so we know they
may have raised their hand to answers just because the person
next to them did.
We did not do follow up questions because they were done
listening and wanted to play with the puppets.

Reflection

We had a blast getting to present to the

preschoolers at Allison Park. Their attention
span lasted about 20 minutes and then we let
them pick a puppet to show us how they
brush their teeth. We had some good laughs
when talking about healthy snacks. I feel like
our lesson plan was well organized and we
were able to use terms that they would
understand while still making a positive
impact. Their teacher called me the next day
and said that her students really enjoyed the
presentation and that they were all telling her
about how they brushed their teeth with their
new toothbrush.

Title: Oral Health Care
Goals: To provide the caregivers with information regarding the
importance of oral health on systemic health as well as new methods
of homecare.
Instructional Objectives:

What is gum disease? Differentiate between gingivitis and periodontitis.

Discuss the effects of oral health on systemic health.

Discuss xerostomia, including its causes, symptoms and remedies.

Demonstrate cleaning aids that are specific to residents with limited mobility.

Discus denture care, including the effects of improper care.

Give real-life scenarios to stress the importance of routine oral care.

Brushing twice per day, morning and night. Chlorhexidine rinse is administered once per month. Most residents have a
preference for interproximal cleaning devices, such as toothpicks or flosspicks, and some have a power toothbrush.

How many of your residents currently have dentures, either full or partial?

None!

What is the daily protocol for oral hygiene with your residents?

All of them! A dentist visits the care facility once per year and a hygienist provides cleanings with a mobile unit.
Transportation can be arranged if residents need to visit a dental office for further care.

Almost all of them.

How does our staff assist these residents in caring for their dentures?

Soak them overnight in warm water and brush them with a manual toothbrush.

Tooth loss is a normal part of aging.

Gum disease is a minor infection.

FACT & FICTION Gum disease starts as a minor, reversible infection; but, if left
untreated, it progresses to a chronic disease for which there is no cure.

Bleeding gums are normal.

FICTION Tooth loss is not a normal part of aging. Teeth are meant to last a lifetime!

FICTION Bleeding gums are not normal. We dont bleed from any other tissue in our
body unless we have an infection or injury.

People lose their teeth because of cavities.

FICTION More people lose their teeth due to periodontal disease than to cavities.

Goals: Educate the kids about foods that are good and bad for their teeth and to emphasize twice a day
brushing and flossing to keep plaque germs away.

Instructional Objectives:

Discussion of the importance of keeping your teeth and gums healthy

Talk about healthy foods vs. unhealthy foods

Play The Amazing World of Oral Health Video and have Captain Power Clean explain to the kids
why teeth and gums are important, how plaque germs harm teeth and gums and how to keep teeth
and gums healthy everyday.

Assessment

We asked pre survey questions to assess the kids daily

brushing and flossing habits and nutritional knowledge.

The questions were asked to the whole group and the kids
answered by raise of hands and voices.

After the kids answered the questions we followed up with an

explanation to the answers.

The kids were then asked the same questions again to

assess if they were understanding what we were explaining.

Reflection/Evaluation

This was such a great group of kids to present to and we felt

our presentation was fun and interactive for them!

We utilized a pre and post-questionnaire that the kids

answered by raise of hands. Most of the kids knew the answers
to the pre questions and then after explanation of the answers
every kid knew the answer to the same post questions.

We involved the kids throughout the whole presentation, which

kept them engaged. They had lots of questions for us and they
actually caught on to the information very quickly.

The caregivers thought our presentation was great and asked

if we could come by every 3 months to teach the kids the
importance of brushing, because most of them dont brush
their teeth.

Overall, we were very pleased with the effectiveness of our

presentation and how interested the kids were in our
information. It was a fun experience and we would love to do it
again!
