Thereisincreasinginterestaboutallaspectsofpainsensationforpatientsundergoinghead
andnecksurgery,andeffortshavebeenmadetobetterassess,monitorandreducethe
occurrenceofpain.Theaetiologyofpainisconsideredtobe"multifactorial",asitisdefinedby
severalfeaturessuchaspersonalexperience,qualityperception,location,intensityand
emotionalimpact.Theaimofthispaperis:(i)toevaluatetheefficacyofanalgesictreatmentin
patientswithheadandneckcancertreatedbysurgery,and(ii)tostudythevariablesand
predictivefactorsthatcaninfluencetheoccurrenceofpain.Atotalof164patients,affectedby
headandneckcancerandsurgicallytreated,betweenDecember2009andDecember2013,
wereincludedinthisstudy.Datacollectedincludeage,gender,assessmentofanaestheticrisk,
tumourlocalisation,pathologicalcancerstage,TNMstage,typeofsurgeryperformed,
complexityanddurationofsurgery,postoperativecomplications,postoperativedaysofhospital
stayandpainevaluationondays0,1,3and5postsurgery.Westudiedtheappropriatenessof
analgesictherapyintermsofincidenceandprevalenceofpostoperativepainwealsorelated
paintopatientcharacteristics,diseaseandsurgicaltreatmenttodeterminepossiblepredictive
factors.Thepopulationstudiedreceivedadequatepaincontrolthroughanalgesictherapy
immediatelypostsurgeryandinthefollowingdays.Noassociationsbetweengender,ageand
postoperativepainwerefound,whereaspathologicalcancerstage,complexityofsurgeryand
tumoursiteweresignificantlyassociatedwiththeriskofpostoperativepain.Adequatepain
controlisessentialinoncologicalpatients,andparticularlyinheadandneckcancerpatientsas
theprevalenceofpaininthislocalisationisreportedtobehigherthaninotheranatomicalsites.
Improvedcomprehensionofthebiologicalandpsychologicalfactorsthatcharacterisepain
perceptionwillhelptoenhanceitscontrolinthefuture.
