Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Mindmap of ideas for your installation

Create a mindmap showing ideas of how you might install your video.
Define what type(s) of visuals you will use.
(Eg. video cameras, still cameras, hand crafted artwork, film, animation, digital technologies)

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Past and current video installation practice

From your research into video installation, give two examples that you think influence your work / ideas
in some way.
One should be a past practitioner, the other should be contemporary.
Past Practitioner
Name:

Biography

Vito Acconi Command

performance 1978

began to produce visual work in 1969

From 1970 until 1974 he staged a series of
performances, such as Broad Jump '71, a jumping
competition for men, with a woman as the prize,
designed to expose the conventions of male
ownership of women

Notes on their installation

He makes you think by using simple footage dsplayed in
formats that are not often seen and this makes them striking.
He likes to make a point. One of his famous instaltions
features people watching people watch a video this ads a
layer of interaction that captivates the watcher. This also
chalenges conotations and even human perception like much
of his work, this makes the watcher think and when somone
thinks more about a piece it is more effective because you
think about each part and what it means so the effect is more
potent. He also uses scale to make onlookers feel either big
or small and this gives them a role in the piece and makes it
more immersive.
How is it similar to your ideas?

The use of scale with Piccadilly Circus will make

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

people feel small We want to make the point of how

busy advertising can be and how it boggles the mind
so we will use scale to make this point more effective.
We are capturing a similar concept to Command
Performance as we will see the adverts from the
perspective of someone who is in another location,
that location being Piccadilly Circus. This puts the
watcher in the shoes of somone at this location and
thus makes them feel small and powerless much like
comand performance.

Contemporary Practitioner
Name:
Omer Fast
Biography
He was born in Jerusalem 1972 but now works in Berlin as a
video artist. His work is chalenging some might say anti
establishment. He likes to blend boundries between fantasy
and truth.

Images

Notes on their installation

His installations cause people to be immersed in to a world
they wouldnt normally be in, this method of installation is
very impactful because it makes the audience think. He
cracks conventions for example in his work 5000 ft is the
best he uses footage from a US drone, this is almost
unheard of. Modern confilict is something we as normal
people dont see so when we see this footage from this
drone we are reminded of the militarised planet we live on
and this hits hard. He likes to bring home the truth although
slightly dramatised. He imerses people in a world they have
no contol over and this for the human mind is borderline
tourturous, leaving the watcher feeling powerless small but
yet all the more mesmerised.

How is it similar to your ideas?

We will also be projecting video on to a board to immerse

people in to a different location. The way we will use a large
screen and footage of a Picidilly Circus to make the watcher
feel small and powerless to the avertising. The use of a real
place that people will recocnise will also ad to the imersion
just like the way Omar uses places pople will know.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Installation / set sketches

Draw a series of thumbnail sketches showing ideas for your installation. Add labels to your diagrams to
identify equipment, where the image will be seen, where the audience will stand etc.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Sound design
What sound will you have?
It will feature sounds of the public e.g. people walking, people talking, pigeons, wind, cars. This will
immerse the reader, making them feel like they are in a bussy city and thus give them that small feeling
against the power of advertising.

Will you use headphones or speakers for this sound?

Speakers will be use to creat a sound scape.

Why?
We chose speaker because it makes the sound more natural and thus makes the viewer more imersed
in the piece.

Lighting design
What lighting will you have in your installation? Consider health and safety.
We will only have the projector and the rest of the installation will be lighted by the venue.
We will keep the surrounding area nice and dark so that the projection stands out more. We will also
have to have some lighting around the back of the exibition and around the sides otherwise it make be
so dark it is unsafe as we have cables and tables people might trip over.

Sketch out your lighting plans for the installation.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Projection vs screen
Will you project your video or play it on a screen?
Project it.

Why?

We are projecting because it

makes more sense as we are
planning to have a large wall
sized screen displaying our
installation, as you can imagine
a screen this size would not
only cost an arm and a leg but
be massively impractical.
So we are going to project the
images onto a large billboard.

If you are using a screen,

will you use a single
screen, or multiple
screens?

We will use a single projected

image but of many different
screens. As the footage of
Piccadilly Circus has many
screens.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

If you are projecting

what will you project
ONTO? (ie fabric, screen,
materials etc)

We will project onto a large

white billboard. Or a projection
screen. This will be large to
make the audience more
imersed.

How will that change how

your audience READS
your animation?

The busy hustle and

bustle of the city scape
will make people feel like
they are there in front of
the screens. The many
screens will add to this
because they will have to
focus on all the ads at
once. This will aslo make
the reader feel more
immersed and smaller
because of the size of the
screen.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Technological convergence
What is technological convergence?

This is the way that new technology is used to perform a task that older technology did. The
newer technology obviously does a better job than the old. As newer technology replaces old
and old becomes obsolete this is the definition of technological convergence .

Will you be using this in your installation?

We will be using green screen technology to impose our footage onto an image of Piccadilly Circus.
We will be using digital projection to get a high quality image and stereo sound to give it a feeling of
realism.

Explain your answer.

The newer technology of Green screen will help us to make the installation interesting and will
be more effective than individually projecting onto each billboard. The digital projection and
surround sound will make the audience more immersed in the experience than if we had to use
a film projector as it would be lower quality.

Venue:

The Red Lion

Location:
Positive aspects of this venue:

Henley-on-Thames
1. It is very close so there are no logistical problems.

2. It is easy to get to so lots of people will come.

3. They will let us do it for free

Negative aspects of this venue:

1. Limited space

2.

Limited capacity

3. There is a small amount of parking space.

Venue:

National gallery

Location:
Positive aspects of this venue:

London
1. It is London so lots of people will come and we will have a
big turnout.
2. There will be plenty of exhibition space.
3. There is easy access for many people

Negative aspects of this venue:

1. They charge for entry so less people might come.

2. They are very competitive with space.
3. It would be expensive for all the logistics.

Venue:

Reading Museum

Location:
Positive aspects of this venue:

Reading
1. Its in Reading so its relatively accessible and many
people will be able to come.

2. Reading is a very cultural town so it will have a relatively

good reception.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

3. Reading a large busy town so lots of people will see the

posters and come and check it out.

Negative aspects of this venue:

1. Reading can be hell for traffic and there is little parking.

2. Reading can be expensive to get to and transporting stuff

from collage might prove difficult.

3. There might not be any appetite for a Henley Collage

exhibition in Reading as it is not local.

Lighting Information:
It is internal so it should be dark enough for
what we need.
It may be a little too washed out for
projections

Solutions:
Use dark curtains to block out any light that
may ruin the experience for other viewers.

Sound Information:
It will be busy so getting people to hear our
adverts may be hard

Solutions:

Power Information
230 v mains electricity

Solutions:
Emergancy power- We are not sure if we
actually need this but it will be useful to
have in case of emergancy.

Hazards
As I said it will be busy so keeping main
walk ways clear is essential

Solutions:
Have a good amount of space for people to
walk around

Use headphones to make sure the sound is

clear and you can hear it in order to
immerse yourselff.

How have the following influenced your ideas?

work of the artists you have researched

venue and facilites

The size of the venue is a limitation so

we have had to change our idea to fit.
The people of Henley are very
conservative so we have used a
London landmark to relate.

lighting

Lighting is a limitiation as we are using

projection so we have chosen a spot
away from the door.

sound

screens / projectors

The use of diegetic sound to bring the

audience into the location
We are going to use a projector to give
it the look of Piccadilly Circus.

speakers / headphones

use of out side footage

absract ideas
use of scale

The use of headphones to immerse

the viewers in the experience is
common place in installations so we
have decided to use this.

Copyright issues
What potential copyright issues could your vidio instalation infringe?
The use of other footage like the time lapse from Piccadilly Circus could infringe copyright. And goes
against ofcoms rules and regulations. http://www.ofcom.org.uk/ The use of any music could get us in
trouble. Any company logos we acidently show may have to be blured out as this could cause copyright
problems.
