This operating manual contains all the information that is required for the HRD-suppressor
type E. (High Rate Discharge - Extinguisher Type Explosives valve opening)
The operating manual provides you with basic information on safety, the system, assembly,
installation, commissioning, normal operations, fault treatment, service, regular maintenance, transport and storage of the individual components.
The depth of information of the operating manual for users is aimed at the customer's
trained operator or installation technician.
The operating manual cannot take account of all variants for use. Accordingly, the operating manual contains only the information required for standard applications and the appropriate installation.
Please read all the safety information carefully in the interests of your own safety, that of
your employees and to safeguard the equipment itself.
Special knowledge is required for certain work: the qualifications of those carrying out this
work must conform to the degree of difficulty of this work, see chapter 2.4 "Authorised
users".

1.2

Authorized users
Those responsible for safety must ensure that the operation of the explosion protection
system in normal condition and alarm or fault condition will be carried out by personnel
who have been adequately trained and that the work is checked by responsible skilled
workers. Qualified persons are authorised by the person responsible for the safety of employees and the plant to carry out this work because of their vocational training, experience,
instruction and their knowledge of the relevant standards, provisions, accident regulations
and plant conditions. It is important that these persons are able to detect and avoid possible
danger in good time. Knowledge of first-aid measures and local rescue apparatus is necessary and it is presupposed that:

the national laws are obeyed;

these persons know the process flow and are briefed about how to operate the explosion protection system by the project construction manager from IEP Technologies GmbH.

these persons have read the documentation of IEP Technologies GmbH;

unqualified persons must not be allowed to work on high-voltage installations;

unqualified persons must not remain in or work on dangerous system parts;

installation and commissioning of the suppressor will be carried out by authorized

personal. These persons must be qualified according to 201 of the explosives law
to store, use and transport explosives and pyrotechnical elements.
Information
The qualification to 201 of the Explosives Act is not necessary to the HRDsuppressor type E needed with plug connection, as the explosive is already built
into the valve and the user can connect the trigger unit via the plug contact.
WARNING
AT THE REPLACEMENT OF ACTIVATED HRD SUPPRESSORS YOU HAVE
TO NOTE ALSO THAT THE ATTACHED NOZZLE SYSTEM, DEPENDING ON
THE CONDITION, SHALL BE REPAIRED OR EVEN BE REPLACED.
IN CASE THE ACTIVATED SYSTEM IS MAINTAINED BY THE OPERATOR
HIMSELF, IEP TECHNOLOGIES GMBH CANT ASSUME ANY WARRANTY.

IT HAS TO BE ENSURED THAT THE INITIAL OPERATION WITH THE OPERATING ALARM CONTROL IS ONLY PERFORMED BY AUTHORIZED AND EXPERIENCED PERSONAL.
Caution
IF OUR HRD SUPPRESSORS ARE INSTALLED ON VIBRATING PLANT
PARTS, SPECIAL MEASURES ARE REQUIRED!

2.5.2 Detecting faults

All changes to normal operations should be regarded as an indication of an impairment of
the function which should be taken seriously. These include among other things:

the monitoring devices are triggered (false alarm)

cylinder pressure < 50 bar

WARNING
THE EHRD-SUPPRESSOR IS FILLED WITH NITROGEN UNDER A PRESSURE OF 60 BAR. THE PROVISIONS OF THE DIRECTIVE 2010/35/EU AND
LOCAL AND NATIONAL REGULATIONS GOVERNING PRESSURISED VESSELS MUST BE COMPLIED WITH. NON-COMPLIANCE WITH THESE REGULATIONS CAN LEAD TO INJURY.

2.5.3 Preventing consequential damage after faults

To prevent faults which may lead indirectly or directly to injuries to personnel or damage
to property the operating company must ensure

2.6

that the responsible maintenance personnel can be notified at any time and
as quickly as possible,

that the maintenance personnel is trained to recognise EHRD-suppressor

faults so that they can react correctly to interrelated failures,

that switching off does not lead to direct consequential faults.

Information on effect to the environment and disposal

The subassemblies of a triggered, depressurised EHRD-suppressor can be

easily dismantled and so can be easily disposed.

The subassemblies of a non-triggered EHRD-suppressor can only be performed by authorized personal to dispose it properly.

Individual components of the HRD valve are made of hardened steel. The
pressure vessel is made of steel.

Application description

3.1

Overview
The EHRD-valve is a rapid-opening valve which has been developed for use in protection
systems for explosion suppression and isolation.
The efficiency of the explosion suppression is based on extremely rapid opening of the
valve in the millisecond range.
This is achieved using a line cutting charge system mounted onto a bursting disc.
The suppression cylinder is screwed onto the valve. This is filled with suppressant
(KiddEx) and nitrogen at 60 bar. The valve, including the pressure vessel, is then
screwed (with or without an elbow) onto a mounting flange which is welded to the vessel
to be protected.

3.2

Principle and method of functioning of the EHRD-suppressor

The suppression cylinder is closed by a locking ring over a bursting disc. Under the bursting disc the trigger device is located, which consists of a detonator and a line cutting charge.
In the case of an explosion, the trigger device is ignited by the control system. Within ca
1.5 milliseconds, the bursting disc is cut by the line cutting charge.
Because of the effect of the nitrogen pressure (60 bar) in the suppressor, the bursting disc
is pushed downwards and opens the complete flow cross section for the suppressant. The
suppressant in the cylinder is spread optimal using a special nozzle system.
Industrial process vessels including silos, filters, cyclones, mixers and dryers which contain combustible dusts are explosive together with an effective ignition source and oxygen.
With an explosion suppression system installed, the explosion flames are extinguished by
the powerful blow of suppressant, and the effect of the explosion is reduced to harmless.

Maintenance intervals and testing term

4.1

Maintenance and inspection

The suppressors are part of an explosion protection system. Maintenance work on this
protection system must be carried out, depending on the environmental and process conditions of the customer installation, at least once a year. Systems that are more exposed
must perform more maintenance and inspections. During these inspections, the suppressor is checked for damage and pressure loss. The inspections must be carried out by a
IEP Technologies GmbH service engineer or by a IEP Technologies GmbH authorized
person.
Information
See the definition Authorized users (chapter 2.4).

The suppressor Pressure vessel filled with powder, compressed with nitrogen are
grouped under the pressure vessels UN-Nr. 1066.
The testing term of the cylinders in accordance to the regulations for dangerous goods is
max. 10 years.
This is also the maximum operating time of the vessel.
The maintenance and extension of the test time of the suppressor is performed by a notified body.
Because of organisational or plant-specific conditions the maintenance intervals given by
an authorized or notified body can also turn out to be shorter.

4.3

Decommissioning and removal

Uninstalling the pressurized HRD suppressor must be performed only by IEP Technologies
GmbH or by authorized professional firm.
Is the HRD suppressor equipped with a plug connection, it can be dismantled by competent professional staff.
