a) Describe the gyroscopic effect on ships.

b) Mass of the engine fitted in an aeroplane is 400kg. The radius of gyration of the revolving
masses is 30cm. The sense of rotation of masses is clockwise as viewed from the back of the
engine and its speed is 2000rpm. Determine the magnitude and direction of the gyroscopic
couple acting on the aeroplane when its speed of flight is 125kmph in a circular path of
radius 30m in clockwise direction as viewed from the top above the plane.

3.

Three rotating masses mA= 14kg, mB=11kg and mC=20kg are attached to a shaft with their CG
at 55mm, 80mm and 30mm respectively from the shaft axis. The angular position of B and C
from A respectively is 600 and 1300 measured in the same direction. Determine the magnitude
and angular position with respect to A of two balancing masses each with its CG at 15mm
from the shaft axis to be attached mid way between A and B and between B and C.

4.

a) Explain the working of porter governor.

b) In a Wilson-Hartnell type of governor, the mass of each ball is 5kg. The lengths of the ball
arm and the sleeve arm of each mell-crank lever are 100mm and 80mm respectively. The
stiffness of each of the two springs attached directly to the balls is 0.4N/mm. The lever for
the auxiliary spring is pivoted at its midpoint. When the radius of rotation is 100mm., the
equilibrium speed is 200rpm. If the sleeve is lifted by 8mm for an increase of speed of 6%,
find the required stiffness of the auxiliary spring.

a) Derive an expression for transmissibility ratio for spring mass damper system.
b) An engine of 560N is mounted on isolators of stiffness 1kN/mm and a damping factor of
0.25, The piston of the engine weighing 30N has a stroke of 80mm. The engine runs at
3000rpm. Determine the force transmitted to the foundation.

a) Explain the applications of fly wheel as storage of energy.

b) The turning moment diagram for a petrol engine is drawn to a vertical scale of 1mm=500N.m
and a horizontal scale of 1mm=30. The turning-moment diagram repeats itself after every
half revolution of the crankshaft. The areas above and below the mean torque line are 260,
-580, 80, -380, 870 and -250 mm2. The rotating parts have a mass of 55kg and radius of
gyration of 2.1m. If the engine speed is 1600 rpm, determine the coefficient of fluctuation of
speed.
