a) What do you understand by the term friction in an impulse turbine? How does it effect the
combined velocity triangle.
b) A single row impulse turbine develops 132.4 KW at a blade speed of 175 m/s using 2 Kg of
steam per second. Steam leaves the nozzle at 400 m/s. Velocity coefficient of the blades is
0.9. Steam leaves the blades axially. Determine the nozzle angle, blade angles at entry and
exit, assuming no shock.

The following data relate to an air conditioned space:

Out door condition - 38C DBT, 50% RH
Room condition - 24C DBT, 50% RH
Sensible heat load 24KW
Latent heat load 6 KW
By pass factor of the cooling coil 0.16
If the ventilation requirement is such that on mass flow rate basis 20% of fresh air is introduced
and 80% of supply air is re-circulated. Determine
a) Supply air flow rate
b) outside air sensible heat
c) out side air latent heat

tube boiler.
b) A boiler uses 18 Kg air per Kg of fuel. Determine the minimum height of chimney required to
produce a draught of 25 mm of water. The mean temperature of chimney gases is 315C and
that of outside air 27C.
