Objective: In this lesson we will be focusing on adjectives. Students will be able to intensify and
excite their own writing by adding adjectives. Students will understand the purpose of adjectives
and how to use them correctly by incorporating them into their own writing to create a better
sentence.
Background: Students will already know the basics of writing and sentence structure. This
lesson will help them better their writing by being descriptive and adding adjectives to their
writing.
Activity: I would start off the lesson by having five different objects and food in the front of the
class. I would have the students get into five groups. Each group would have a different object
and they would work together to come up with six words that describe the object. For example, if
the students had a bottle of water they could use words like plastic, wet, pliable, and clear. They
would then switch with another group and do this same task for each object. We would then as a
class discuss the words they had used and see if any group had use the same word to describe the
object. The students would then be ready to talk about adjective. We would discuss that we can
make our writing by using adjectives to help the reader understand their writing. As a class we
would describe our class pet and what he does when we are at school. We would start off by
listing adjectives that describe our class pet. Then we would create sentences about what he does
during the day. Lastly we would put the adjectives into our sentences to make them more
descriptive and entertaining to read.
Assignment: After we have done this activity with the class, I would have the students take out
their last journal entry. I would have them make a list of five different adjectives that they could
implement into their writing; this could describe how they felt, what they did, or description
about what the results were. After making a list of five adjectives I, would have them incorporate
the adjectives into their past journal entry. I would then have them self assess themselves to see if

adding the adjectives helped or hindered their writing. I would then have them write a paragraph
about the definition of adjectives and if they thought they were helpful in their writing.
Assessment: Students would self assess their writing by asking themselves these questions

Did I use five adjectives?

Do the adjectives fit in the sentence?

Did using adjectives improve my writing?

Could I define what an adjective is?

After answering these five questions they would give themselves a score
A- I understand adjectives and their purpose and included five in my writing
B- I think I understand what adjectives are and I included three or more in my writing
C- I dont understand adjectives and I included two or less in my writing.
I would be able to asses the students knowledge by looking to see if the adjectives were
incorporated correctly into the sentence to give better description and depth to the sentence. I
would take into consideration and my own thoughts and give them either an A, B, or C (as
described above).
