every step of the project. Jasmyn contributed mostly to Step 3 and did not contribute much to
anything else; Gavin produced a PowerPoint that was not used but contributed greatly to Step 3;
Niki brought in a box, e-mailed people, and contributed greatly to every step.
NJGS had to engage with several people in order to have its project deemed successful.
Our group needed to maintain correspondence with teachers in order to keep us on the most
successful and efficient path to the fulfillment of our goals. The insight provided by the teachers
was very valuable and without them our group wouldnt have had an idea to begin with. There
was no direct government interaction but the group did have to take the batteries to a local
facility so that it may be recycled.
Even though environmentalism is constantly being integrated into education, it was only
this year that I have done something in my life to be more responsible and caring towards the
environment. Though the Capstone process is tedious, it has given me a newfound awareness of
how everything humans do has an effect on the environment as a whole. Our society finds ways
to make life more convenient with little to no regards towards the pollution it produces. From
rapid urbanization, active resistance to the major use of renewable sources, to not implementing
recycling projects enough, humans tend to favor convenience in lieu of Earths well-being.
During this project, I often questioned whether our group would actually make a difference in the
grand-scale of things. At the end of this project, I cared little whether our group made a
difference. I learned that it is not this tiny collection project that mattered, but the mindset it
instilled with us and the mindsets we have instilled upon others that counts. This project has
given me and the people I know a sympathy to the world around us. Everything humans do to
the environment, positive or negative, matters. If every person in eighth grade donated a dollar
to a charity, that would amass to about 160-200 dollars. If every person in the world took steps

to be aware of the problems caused by humans to the environment (rise greenhouse gasses, of
C02 levels, global warming) and force their parliaments to do something, we might actually have
a chance to undo the damage we have done even if it takes a long time.
