ST KOSMAS & ST DAMIANOSOS

OF

ROME

Ke eti kath ipervolin Odon imin diknimi: And

St Kosmas and St Damianos were born at Rome, brothers by birth, and

Physicians by profession. They suffered at Rome during the reign of
Emperor Karinos (283-284).
Brought up by their parents according to the Rules of Christian Piety, they
led strict and chaste lives, and were granted by Divine Grace, the Gift of
Healing.
Their generosity and exceptional kindness to all converted many to Christ,
for the unmercenary brothers told everyone they treated: It is not by
our own power that we treat you, but by the Power of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the True God. Believe in Him and be Healed.
Their refusal to accept any payment whatsoever for their cures soon
earned them the greatly respected title: Unmercenary Physicians.
Their Life of active Service to God and their great Spiritual Influence on the
people around them led many into the Church, but which also attracted
the attention of the Roman authorities.
Soldiers were sent to arrest the brothers, but having heard of this the
Christian Community convinced St Kosmas and St Damianos to hide for
a while until they could help them to escape.
When the soldiers were unable to find the Unmercenary Physicians, they
arrested the people who lived in their neighbourhood, which caused St
Kosmas and St Damianos to surrender to the Roman authorities,
begging them to release their innocent neighbours.
They were tried before the Roman Emperor and they openly professed their
Faith in Christ our God, Who had come into the world to Save all
mankind and Redeem the fallen world from sin.
When commanded to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods, thereby
renouncing their Christian Faith, they adamantly refused to do so and
proclaimed: We have done evil to no one, we are not involved with
the magic or sorcery of which you accuse us. We treat the infirm by
the Power of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and we take no
payment for rendering aid to the sick, because our Lord commanded
His Disciples: Freely have you received, freely give! (MATTHEW 10: 8).
The Emperor persisted with his demands for them to offer sacrifices to the
Roman gods, whereupon, through the Prayers of the Holy Brothers,
Emperor Karinos was struck blind in order for him to personally
experience the Almighty Power of our Lord, Who does not forgive
blasphemy against the Holy Spirit .
The witnesses, realising what had happened, cried out in wonder and
alarm: Great is the Christian God! There is no other God but Him!
Many of those who believed then besought the Unmercenary
Wonderworkers to Heal the Emperor, who also implored the Saints for
Mercy, and even promised them that he would convert to the True God
he would accept our Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour - so the
Saints healed him.
After the sight of the Emperor had been restored, St Kosmas and St
Damianos were set free, and allowed to continue treating the sick and
the suffering citizens of Rome.
Sadly, what the hatred of the pagans and the ferocity of the Roman
authorities failed to do, was eventually accomplished by obsessive
jealousy and envy - of the worst passions of sinful human nature!
An older Physician, a Medical Instructor, under whom the Holy Brothers
had studied Medicine, grew extremely malevolent towards them until
driven to insane jealously that overwhelmed him - he plotted to kill the
much loved and venerated Wonderworkers.

Theotokos who forever protects all
those who honour Thee!

He summoned the two unsuspecting Physicians who had formerly been his
most beloved and erudite students, and invited them to accompany him
to gather various medicinal herbs that grew in the countryside.
When they had gone far into the mountainous region, he murdered them
and threw their bodies into a river.
Thus these two Holy Brothers, the Wonderworking Unmercenary Physicians,
St Kosmas and St Damianos, ended their Earthly Journey as Martyrs, for,
although they had devoted their entire life to the Christian Service of
God and their neighbors, and, by the Grace of God, had escaped the
Roman sword, they were treacherously murdered by their respected
and trusted Teacher!
The Lord our God Glorifies those who are pleasing to Him, and, through the
Intercessory Prayers of St Kosmas and St Damianos, God continues to
grant Healing to all who with Faith, beseech the Wonderworkers for their
Holy Assistance.
Oddly enough, in addition to these Wonderworking, Unmercenary Saints,
named St Kosmas and St Damianos of Rome, there were four other
Wonderworking, Unmercenary Physicians named St Kosmas and St
Damianos of Asia Minor (1 November), and of Arabia (17 October).
