RATIONALISATION
The creak and the jolt as the beast moves away,
The scream, the roar, regulator all the way,
Up the incline, its the best approach,
As the metal beast hauls her coach,
Shell be gone soon, a sight to miss
The shrieking whistle, the distinctive hiss,
No more firebox for the eggs to fry,
No more breakfast on the fly
The belch of the smoke, the leak of the steam,
The loco not tended for, it never does gleam
There one was a time when the railways did bloom
But now the trains are to be sent to their tomb
The engines are to be cut up and sold,
Boilers forever empty and cold,
Chopped into hundreds and thousands of pieces,
Fragmented into iron and brass and greases
The branch lines will be closing soon,
All the beloved lines gone by June
Even some main lines are getting the chop
The government is letting the deathly axe drop
They want to focus on road transport, they say,
They seem to want to throw the railways away
British Railways have created a hole
That can only be filled by the trains that have soul.

LAPFORD AFC
IN CUP FINAL AGAIN!

February Weather in Lapford

February was milder and wetter than average.
The highest temperature was a balmy 13.2C on the 21st,
the lowest was -3.4C on the night of the 16th. The
coolest day was the 13th when the maximum remained
below 4.6C.
Total rainfall was 92.2mm and the wettest day was the
6th with a fall of 18.2mm.
The windiest day was the 8th with a gust of 59m.p.h.
The 7th and 9th were both very windy too with gusts
over 50m.p.h.
The last week of the month was dry but with some
sharp ground frosts.

Andy Epstein
Lapford Lookout

Despite a gap of ten weeks in their fixtures due to

the continuously wet weather, Lapfords first XI are once
again in the Devon Senior Cup Final. Playing at home on
December 12th last year, their captain Mark Tucker was
very seriously injured during the match, having just
scored. He had to be taken to hospital where, for several
days, his life was in the balance. Thanks to the skills of
the surgeons, the doctors and nurses and the love, care
and prayers of his family and many friends he recovered
steadily over the next few months, despite losing two
stones in weight.
No matches were possible at all on the home pitch,
and the quarter final could not be played until Saturday
27th February, when the team travelled to play against
Hartland, where they eventually won 3-2, literally with
the last kick of the game, as Olaf McLellan scored,
following goals from Harry Leach and Joe Badcock.
Then, in a real thriller, Lapford beat Plymouth
Millbridge 3-0 at home on 5th March. What looks like a
one-sided victory doesnt reflect what at one stage
seemed very much closer. Lapford were well on top to
start with, but the Plymouth goalie made three splendid
saves, then the game began to change as their team spent
the second part of the half doing all the attacking, but the
present Lapford team are very sound and well organised
in defence as well as in attack. They never panicked, still
relied on good tackling and passing and then, only shortly
before half-time, a break away down the right wing, an
accurate pass across the goal mouth hit the far goal post
of the Plymouth goal and Alec Phillips was there to tuck
it safely away, and Lapford were one up.
Then what won the match for Lapford was a
spectacular goal by Harry Leach in the first five minutes
of the second half. A cross-field pass put him away up
on the left wing and he raced 35 yards, cut inside and
gave the goalie no chance with a magnificent shot into
the far corner of the net. That settled it as the previously
well organised Millbridge team began to panic, tried too
hard, missed chances and finally had a player sent off.
The match was finished five minutes from the end by
another goal from Harry Leach. This team are a splendid
group of all-rounders, they play for each other, the
defence is as good as the attack and they are all local
lads.
And there at the heart of it all, perhaps taking a
risk, was Mark Tucker. Now the club faces the task of
fixing all the remaining league fixtures, hoping to win
promotion again. Then the Cup Final will be played at
Newton Abbot on 28th April.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JAMIE!
Chulmleigh Community College Year 8 student, Jamie, has been
awarded runner-up in a national history competition, The Huge
History Lesson, a joint venture involving The British Museum,
The Times Educational Supplement and Arts Council funding.
Jamie and his fellow students were set the task by History teacher,
Mrs Hutchings, to create an imaginative way of presenting
information they had found out about a chosen museum artefact or
object.
There was a plethora of entries, involving a huge variety of topics
and exhibits. Chulmleigh College was delighted when they were
informed that, not only had one of the schools entries, a project
on horse brasses devised by Alice Cross and Niamh Blacker, been
shortlisted for the prize, but Jamie Wards entry, a website,
including a video presentation, all about Tiverton Museums steam locomotive exhibit, The Tivvy Bumper, had been
chosen as one of only three runners-up in this national competition.
The prize involves a behind the scenes tour of The British Museum, which is set for later this spring. Jamie has
chosen to take along Alice and Niamh, who were shortlisted for their entry, as his guests.
Jamie, aged 13, when asked how he felt about his achievement, stated, I was absolutely amazed and ecstatic when I
heard the news. It was really hard keeping it a secret for so long before the press release came out. Im really looking
forward to my trip to the museum and would like to thank Mrs Hutchings for being a great teacher and telling us all
about the competition in the first place. I never thought anything would come of it it just goes to show what you can
do when you try!
Jamie has had a lifelong interest in all things railway-based and hopes to go on to study civil engineering and maybe
even one day become a train driver. You can find Jamies website at www.tivvybumper.wix.com/home and the
competition website at www.tes.com/hugehistory/

funds they need to get them to the countries.

SPRING RECIPES
Rhubarb compote
Early rhubarb makes delicious compote when cooked in
its own juice. Enhance its flavour with vanilla, chopped
stem ginger, orange, lemon, or Rose water. Cut the
washed sticks of rhubarb into bite sized chunks and pack
into a saucepan or casserole. Sweeten to taste with
Demerara sugar, and add lemon or orange rind, and
juice, or other flavouring, and just enough water to
cover the bottom of the pan. Cook very gently until the
rhubarb is tender. When cool serve with Devonshire ice
cream, or yoghurt.

When: Friday 8th April

Time: 7:30pm for 8pm start
Venue: The Waie Inn, Zeal Monachorum

Leaf Spinach and raisins

Wash spinach and remove any coarse stems. Pack into a
saucepan and cover with a tight fitting lid. Cook the
spinach over a moderate heat, stirring occasionally. As
soon as the leaves are tender, drain off any cooking
liquor and roughly chop the spinach. Season with salt,
freshly ground pepper and a little nutmeg, stir in a
spoonful of crme fraiche or a little butter, and finish
with a scattering of raisins.

Lapford Parish Churchyard

It is with much regret that we formally give one
years notice of closure of the Churchyard for
burials.
We are able to honour burial of existing reserved
double burial plots, but due to geological conditions,
the remaining ground is not suitable to allow one
metre space, above the coffin. The Churchyard is
still able to receive Ashes for interment.
Alternatively, we would like to extend the
Churchyard and purchase a piece of ground, to be
consecrated for burials. The requirement would be
access for motorised diggers and adjacent to a public
highway.
The cost of acquiring and preparing this land and
including any necessary consents, will be borne by
the P.C.C.

COLD CALLERS
Persons cold call residents by telephone telling
the resident that they have been placed in the
wrong council tax bracket for a number of years
and are entitled to a rebate. The resident is told
that in order to receive the rebate they will need
to pay an administration fee in advance. The
payment they ask for varies between 60-350.
The resident provides the details and makes the
payment, but then is no longer able to make
contact with the person they spoke to on the
phone.
If you receive a similar call please hang up and
do not give your card details.
If you have any concerns or information please
phone 101. Please inform neighbours of this.

Yours sincerely

April in the Garden and allotment

The Vegetable Garden.

This is the month when seeds can be sown. Check the instructions on the packets and plant away. Make sure
that seed bed is well prepared. Remember the finer the seeds the finer the seed bed should be. Broad beans, if
they are not already planted, carrots, lettuce, spinach, salad leaves, leeks and chard are just a few ideas to get
your healthy, cheap and home grown food underway. Garlic, shallots and onion sets can be planted now in
friable well drained soil. If you find sowing seeds a bit daunting you can buy plantlets from your local nursery
or Garden Centre.
Check your rhubarb under your forcers, harvest it if it is grown sufficiently, if it is still in its infancy leave the
forcer on. Dont over-pick your forced rhubarb. If you force a crown one year give it a rest the next and force
a different crown.
Not a lot to do in the fruit garden except to protect fruit trees and particularly gooseberries with netting to
keep the birds off of the fruit buds.
You can plant strawberry plants in planters or hanging baskets for a pretty and delicious crop in the Summer.

The Ornamental Garden

As I promised last month I have listed some planting ideas for herbaceous beds. The first 4 suggestions are
fairly traditional selections. If you have a fairly sheltered garden the Tropical selection can be very
spectacular.
Just one or two notes first.
A number of the plants I have suggested are pretty susceptible to slug damage so you should consider slug
pellets or nematodes.
* Cannas are very spectacular plants but care should be taken to buy virus free plants or rhizomes. They like
rich but fairly well drained soil so consider adding some grit to improve drainage. Around here it is OK to
leave the tubers in the ground, (if it is not well drained enough they might rot). Whilst they do not need lifting
in this area, the tubers will multiply or spread naturally. After about three years they will need to be lifted and
divided.
**The Musa or Himalayan Banana is a very interesting and architectural plant but it will need winter
protection. I will explain how to protect bananas and cannas in the Autumn and also how to lift and prepare
Canna tubers for re-planting.
Herbaceous plants are always better planted in uneven numbers, threes, fives or sevens. If you are planting a
new border take note of the height that the plants grow to and plant the lowest at the front and the tallest at the
rear. With an island bed the tallest need to go in the middle. Do not plant your new plants to close together.
Usually the plant label will give the spread of the plant as well as its height. Take heed of that information,
the plants will cover a much larger area of garden and those gaps will soon fill as the plants join hands.
Im not a great believer in trying to colour match flowering plants into a white border or a yellow border etc.
Nature produces plants with flowers in all manner of diverse colours and they all co-exist and blend in
together and, in my opinion, look all the better for it. Far better to try and mix different plant forms, narrow
strap like leaves with large round leaves with wispy grasses. For the computer literate of you, a lot of plants
can be bought from specialist nurseries on-line. There is an excellent plant nursery at Colleton Mills near
Chumleigh. Phone 07756 515084 for directions and opening times.
Happy Gardening!
