FROM IRAGA TO PAYARAMA

AWANG DAMIT AHMAD

INTRODUCTION
IRAGA came from Brunei Malay language. IRAGA is the north-east wind angin
timur laut. Air blowing from mainland china toward to Sabah, bring together waves
and hot temperature that affect farmers and fishermen. In IRAGA series Prof Awang
Damit Ahmad try to maintain a large main theme of the life of farmer and fisherman.
IRAGA series start around 2003 to 2011. Focus on nature, particularly those relating
to changes in weather and season. Preferences clearly reflected through the works
in IRAGA series likes MUSIM 2003, PURNAMA MERAH 2007, PERJALAN
UTARA. ANGIN MUSIM INI TERLALU PANAS 2008, SEJAK WAKTU HUJUNG
MUSIM 2010, and IRAGA KELABU: AKU TAK SEMPAT BERLARI
PAYARAMA is crossing thematic boundaries melangkau sempadan tema which
reflect the changes in seasons, nature, and environment, the creative process in this
series also mirrors changes from the perspective of themes, shapes and meaning in
this context, Prof. Awang Damits visual approach looks more dynamic and
expensive, free and unrestrained. Although the focus is still on composition, the used
of media is more free and mixed while retaining his usual strong touches of black
colour.

OBJECTIVE

My objective is what to study about Malaysian artist AWANG DAMIT AHMAD about
the biography data of artist and to study and discuss about the formalistic aspect of
AWANG DAMIT AHMAD.

9 august 2015 my department has trip to Awang Damit Ahmad studio in

Sijangkang. I take this opportunity to interview Prof Awang and asked about Prof
Awangs life background, his life to be an artist and his art work.

SCOPE

In many art work in series IRAGA I like to study and discuss artwork title of IRAGA
KELABUAKU TAK SEMPAT BERLARI this art work was created just before the
tsunami that dominates the work seems to announce the impending disaster, it is
confusing and depressing.

For series PAYARAMA I like to study and discuss about art work title PAYARAMA
the color bring cultural connotations that also reflect the weather, the seasons and
the atmosphere. Abstract shapes are treated to form various composition that
support the meaning.

METHOD

In this research, there are many method that I used to find information about
Awang Damit and his art work. About biography data Awang damit I find from
interview with he and some information that detail I fine from internet and blog that
ex-student Awang damit update about life Awang Damit. Also I find used YouTube for
more information about the art work, I also refer from book DARI IRAGA KE
PAYARAMA the writer is PROF. DR. MULIYADI MAHAMOOD and the publisher is
SEGARIS ART CENTRE and I also interview practical student Awang Damit at his
house.
